15:40:03 <Robert847> I just discovered that I am not able to find my backup files since I last did a "Save As..." using GnuCash Version: 5.15 Build ID: 5.15+(2026-03-28) in Windows 10. It seems that there is an undocumenteed feature that there is an option at the bottom of the Save As... window allowing whether to save data files only, Backup Files only or All. that choice defaulted to Data Files Only and stayed there for all subsequent file saves. So no
15:40:03 <Robert847> w I can't find my backups. Where are they?
15:42:25 <Robert847> The last backup that I can find is dated near the end of March
16:11:59 <Robert847> Also, I am not using any database formats, just XML
16:14:22 <Robert847> I am tryimg to fire up an older version in a Linux environment to see what happens there, but so far my virtual machine is trying to be stupid.
16:19:15 <Robert847> I can't seem to find an answer in the FAQ's either
16:55:20 <Robert847> Apparently Flatpak version 5.14 also has that undocumented option but 4.8 or so ppa in Ubuntu does not.
16:58:04 <Robert847> Would doing Save As... with the All option make GnuCash start producing backups again?
17:10:56 <jralls> Robert847, that drop-down at the bottom of File>Save As... just controls the what's shown in the listbox. It's on File>Open too; it's probably more useful for File>Open than File>Save As since you probably want to use a new file name for the latter and so care less about what's already there.
17:15:58 <jralls> It does depend on you using one of the default suffixes for your data file. I have a bunch of files with no suffix, e.g. foo. I have to use the All option to see them, but I can see their backup files when Datafiles is set because they have only one `gnucash` in the extension.
17:50:29 <Robert847> Apparently I used the Save As... menu item when I simply wanted to start saving the data file in a different directory without noticing the option box at the bottom of the window. Now I seem to be missing all my backups.
17:51:51 <Robert847> Windows file manager cannot find them either
17:53:00 <Robert847> Well, the backups in the previous location are still there
17:54:34 <Robert847> I don't voluntarily mess with suffices. I have caught Linux dropping them once or twice in the last few months
17:56:33 <Robert847> but the data file is very lonely in the new directory without any backups or log files to keep it company
17:56:58 <jralls> Save As writes out a data file where you tell it. Backups happen when you open that data file (instead of the previous one that you did the Save As on), make edits, and save the result. No new saves, no backups.
17:58:24 <jralls> Same for logs. So if you have a logs and backups from April in the previous files locations, that's the one you've been working on.
18:03:47 <Robert847> I have been closing GnuCash and opening the data file in the new location many times as I have been verifying many times by checking the recent files list. Why are the logs and backups from the last few weeks missing?
18:11:32 <Robert847> I just broadened the Windows file search area and found the backups.
18:13:23 <Robert847> they are in the newly assigned directory with the data file. It is the Replay Log files that is still looing in the previous folder
18:17:21 <Robert847> If I have been opening the data file in the new directory and Gnucash has been saving log files there, why doesn't the replay log files look there for them?
18:18:59 <Robert847> I can tell that I am distracted by overlooking something here.
18:21:59 <Robert847> I do think that the file type option desparately needs to be documented.
18:26:38 <Robert847> Especially since it can fall off the bottom of the screen and be completely missed by the user
18:28:30 <Robert847> If he hits Enter instead of looking for the button to press
