18:00:18 <Hikaru> Hi, I'm trying to save my gnucash to a vault using Cryfs but attempting to makes an error box that says "Could not make a backup of the file <path-to-vault>/Test.gnucash" I'm using version 5.10 from the Debian Trixie repo.
18:10:50 <jralls> There should also be a warning in the tracefile (see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile) that says "unable to make backup from x to y: z" where x and y are paths and z is the error GnuCash got from the operating system. Are x and y what you expect, and what is z?
18:21:06 <Hikaru> @jralls The file in x /home/hikaru/Vaults/Test.gnucash.tmp-ZMEY91 exists and y doesn't get created. z says "Numerical result out of range"
18:21:06 <gncbot> Hikaru: Error: "jralls" is not a valid command.

18:34:45 <jralls> The at-sign introduces commands to gncbot, our supybot instance.
18:36:13 <Hikaru> I have now figured out I'm still new to irc and learning things
18:40:25 <jralls> I found an old bug in glib, which we use for opening files: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/issues/2205 but it was fixed 5 years ago. It seems unlikely that that's the problem.
18:44:50 <Hikaru> I'm using KDE 6.3.6 but I can give it a try
18:46:02 *** Sherlock has quit IRC
18:55:33 <Hikaru> jralls the mount params doesn't use the noatime option either. cryfs@/home/hikaru/.local/share/plasma-vault/Finance.enc /home/hikaru/Vaults/Finance fuse.cryfs rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1000,group_id=1000 0 0
19:01:12 <Hikaru> Do you know if gnucash uses hard links at all? Apparently Cryfs doesn't support hard links.
19:06:35 <jralls> Not anywhere that I can think of, and the error is coming from the XML backend's copy_file function that certainly doesn't use hardlinks.
19:07:44 <jralls> But the filename of the file it's trying to copy looks like a report file instead of a data file. That's a bit strange, the backend shouldn't be messing with those.
19:16:23 <Hikaru> I don't think it runs GncXmlBackend::link_or_make_backup(). "* 16:56:26 WARN <gnc.backend> [GncXmlBackend::link_or_make_backup()] unable to make file backup from /home/hikaru/Vaults/Finance/Test.gnucash to /home/hikaru/Vaults/Finance/Test.gnucash.20251004165626.gnucash: Numerical result out of range"
19:18:06 <jralls> Oh, actually the backup file function begins by trying to make a hard link, and if it errors with any of EOERM, ENOSYS, EOPNOTSUPP, ENOTSUP, or ENOSYS it falls back on copying the file. I guess to support cryptfs we need to add ERANGE to the list.
19:20:47 <jralls> Um, of course it runs link_or_make_backup, otherwise it couldn't emit that warning.
19:21:38 <Hikaru> Yes. it looks like there's a pr for hardlinks on cryfs but it is yet to be merged. https://github.com/cryfs/cryfs/pull/306
19:23:01 <jralls> OK, but until it's merged they should be emitting ENOTSUP, not ERANGE, when somebody tries.
19:23:35 <Hikaru> I'll just have to use a different system than cryfs. I don't really need every feature that cryfs has as *gasp* the vault named finance contains finance files.
