17:16:47 <Kaligula> Hi. What is the difference between (price source) "Closest to report date" and "Last up through report date"?
17:17:07 <Kaligula> Because either it doesn't work or I misunderstand it completely.
17:17:09 <Kaligula> :l

18:47:05 <NoobAlice> Kaligula; I think it is like this: Assuming report date is October 31 and you have prices of November 1, October 25, and October 15, "last through report date" uses the Oct 25 price, but "closest to report date" uses the November 1 price.
18:47:25 <NoobAlice> So "last through report date" is closest without actually going later than report date.
18:50:36 <Kaligula> NoobAlice: Thanks. "Last up through report date" includes today?
18:51:34 <NoobAlice> What is "today"? Is your report date today?
18:52:20 <Kaligula> Yes, the report date is today and one of the bars is for today's date.
18:52:47 <NoobAlice> Okay. I would think it would include any prices that are dated today in general.
18:53:08 <NoobAlice> I know there are some weird timezone/date issues, but I have no idea when they occur or whether they would affect this.
18:53:12 <Kaligula> That's what I thought, so far.
18:54:02 <Kaligula> I assume that "Last up/closest to report date" uses last/closest price for each bar (bar's date) respectively, not just whole report date?
18:54:28 <Kaligula> I'll tell you what is wrong with my report.
18:54:28 <NoobAlice> What report are you running? That might make it easier to picture what you're seeing :)
18:54:44 <Kaligula> I'll have to find a en translation
18:54:51 <Kaligula> sec
18:54:55 <NoobAlice> Okay
19:00:34 <Kaligula> Asset Chart / Asset Over Time
19:02:16 <NoobAlice> Okay, I am looking now.
19:05:15 <NoobAlice> All right, yes, it is using the date for each bar for those two price options. I can't tell if they are used correctly by just looking quickly. Picking "most recent" (which you and I have not talked about) really does just use the most recent price, so every bar uses that same price without changing for the bar's date.
19:07:03 <Kaligula> I have an issue where "Last up…" shows the same worth for each bar, even if prices are different.
19:07:48 <NoobAlice> What version of GnuCash are you using?
19:08:08 <NoobAlice> Go to Help > About to look
19:08:19 <Kaligula> 5.4 (2023-09-23)
19:09:09 <Kaligula> This is even super-weirder, because (wait for it, there will be several points):
19:09:19 <Kaligula> (the asset is priced in USD)
19:09:59 <Kaligula> 1) report currency USD, price source "Last up…" → each bar has the same worth/value
19:10:29 <Kaligula> 2) report currency USD, price source "Closest…" → each bar is correct
19:10:44 <Kaligula> 2) report currency PLN, price source "Last up…" → each bar is the same
19:10:56 <Kaligula> (that was 3*)
19:11:01 <NoobAlice> :)
19:11:08 <Kaligula> 4) report currency PLN, price source "Closest…" → each bar is the same
19:11:27 <NoobAlice> I do not understand why it is not working. I have 5.4 also, and it is working for me.
19:11:43 <Kaligula> I have multiple prices (in USD) for the asset since 2001, the last are Sept 22, 23, 25, 30 and Oct 31.
19:12:03 <Kaligula> The same goes for currecy rates.
19:15:38 <NoobAlice> There was a discussion on the mailing list recently (last few months?) that I can't find about price rates and currency conversions, but I do not use different currencies enough for this. I do not know if it is related to what you are seeing.
19:15:56 <NoobAlice> Here is the mailing list archive: https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/
19:17:20 <NoobAlice> Oh! There is a bug! https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=799104
19:17:30 <Kaligula> But ignoring the PLN issue… with USD it's still wrong.
19:17:42 <Kaligula> Oh, I'll take a look at the bug
19:18:46 <Kaligula> Oh, fixed in nightly, I see.
19:18:51 <Kaligula> I shall check!
19:18:55 <NoobAlice> :)
19:19:39 <Kaligula> I don't want to reinstall GnuCash, just want to check if nightly fixes. I'm Windows. Should I run VM?
19:20:16 <NoobAlice> I do not know. I don't use Windows, and I am not a tech-smart person. I am just a normal GnuCash user. :(
19:20:27 <Kaligula> Ah, ok :)
19:30:18 <Kaligula> NoobAlice: Yeah, fixed! \o/
19:30:25 <Kaligula> (at least for USD)
20:00:07 <NoobAlice> Kaligula: Hooray!
20:04:03 <Kaligula> I have to investigate why the hell this still doesn't work for another currency.
20:05:06 <NoobAlice> I think there was discussion of database rates going one way but not the other and which gets preferred, but I don't know the details. It would be in the mailing list...somewhere.
20:08:08 <Kaligula> NoobAlice: Thanks! I was once on the mailing list, but found it extremely unusable :( I have no idea how one can get used to it :(
20:08:27 <Kaligula> That's why I always hope for help here in IRC.
20:09:13 <Kaligula> I don't know about any other place (forum, Discord, wiki page with discussions)
20:20:14 <Kaligula> NoobAlice: Got it! After selecting "Report currency: X" the report uses lat price in currency X, regardless of other newer prices and currency rates. I don't know if it is what you mean, when writing about mailing list :)
20:20:40 <Kaligula> …uses last* price…
20:21:53 <NoobAlice> Kaligula: The mailing list is the place that gives the most help. For GnuCash, IRC seems to be mostly developer talk, but there are some user questions like ours. There are some few people who ask questions on Reddit or StackExchange, but not often (and those are not official help places). I am on the mailing list and have a mail client rule that sends everything from the mailing list to one folder that I look at whenever I thi
20:21:53 <NoobAlice> is a good time.
20:22:19 <NoobAlice> Kaligula: That was not what I had in mind, but it is good to know!
20:27:24 <Kaligula> NoobAlice: Thanks. I looked at the mailing list archive you provided, but is there a place where you can *search* in it? For issues already discussed.
20:28:39 <Kaligula> Oh, well, opening each month in web browser and Ctrl+F-ing is not a bad way, however…
20:28:47 <NoobAlice> In your favorite search engine (DuckDuckGo, Google, etc.) search a word like this:
20:28:49 <NoobAlice> price site:lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/
20:29:02 <Kaligula> <3
20:29:19 <NoobAlice> or whatever word you want instead of price. And that search engine should have a little button somewhere that lets you restrict the search to last month, week, year...
20:29:51 <NoobAlice> That "site:websiteaddress.com" format works for all websites you want to search.
20:30:51 <NoobAlice> Okay, I have to go now. Good luck with everything, and consider rejoining the mailing list! :)
20:31:03 <Kaligula> Thanks for help!
20:31:10 <Kaligula> I learned more than I wished for
20:31:18 <NoobAlice> Hahaha, oh no!
