17:00:34 <AdrienM> frazelle09, while GnuCash does have a 'close books' function that is documented in the Manual, it is not required to use it. There are plenty of threads on the user mailing list about this topic. If you aren't already subscribed to the list, it would be a good idea to do so at that is much more active with more members than IRC.
17:02:24 <AdrienM> Closing Books is something that was practically a necessity with pen and paper. Many accounting packages carried over this function as a requirement, but computers really make it not necessary. You can happily keep going forever without ever closing your books. You don't need to 'start' the next year other than just keep entering transactions.
