12:01:14 <Ticktank> My computer crashed, and i had gnucash open. Now, when i try to open my accounts, it says "no suitable backend was found". Any ideas? Help is appreciated. Thank you!
12:01:42 <Ticktank> I'm running windows 10. Gnucash ver 4.9, but the newest 5.3 does the same thing.

14:00:12 <jralls> Ticktank: First, make sure you're opening the right file. It should have the extension .gnucash, e.g. myfile.gnucash. If you're using the default XML backend previously-saved files will have filenames like myfile.gnucash.20230920161718.gnucash. There will also be transaction-log files in the directory with names like myfile.gnucash.20230920161514.log.

14:16:25 <Ticktank> jralls: Oh gosh. I was only trying the latest auto-save file, which kept giving the issue. the one previous to it works -.-'

15:13:48 <systemdlete> The account name filter in reports doesn't seem to be working for me
15:14:29 <Ticktank> jralls, haha will do. Thanks again!
15:14:29 <systemdlete> Transaction filter works fine though
15:14:32 *** Ticktank has quit IRC
15:16:22 <systemdlete> also, when I run the report it tells me no accounts selected, but I have selected one; it even states such below
15:16:41 <jralls> Which report?
15:16:46 <systemdlete> custom
15:17:00 <systemdlete> I copied the report from another one which works perfectly.
15:17:17 <jralls> You mean you copied the Scheme file?
15:17:20 <systemdlete> then I changed the name of the report and selected a different account
15:17:42 <systemdlete> but for this report, I need to filter on account name, not transaction
15:18:20 <systemdlete> I ran the original report, then did "save config as"
15:18:29 <systemdlete> sorry, not exactly "copied"
15:19:02 <jralls> OK, so back to the original question: What report?
15:19:31 <jralls> As in what GnuCash report did you start with?
15:19:32 <systemdlete> I don't remember which base report I used to create the original report
15:19:41 <systemdlete> I created that a long time back
15:19:46 <systemdlete> is there a way to tell?
15:21:02 <systemdlete> (is it in the scheme file?)
15:21:24 <jralls> Yes, but it's a little convoluted. What OS are you running?
15:21:50 <systemdlete> star linux, which is a variant of devuan, which is debian minus systemd
15:22:26 <systemdlete> build id is 3.4+ (2018-12-30)
15:22:33 <systemdlete> I realize it's a bit old
15:22:43 <systemdlete> maybe this has been fixed since then
15:24:08 <systemdlete> I think we are talking debian buster, in short.
15:24:24 <systemdlete> I have it upgraded to latest repo packages
15:26:18 <jralls> That's a lot old. You shouldn't be exposing unsupported OSes to the net. Anyway, look at ~/.gnucash/saved-reports-2.8. `less` will work. Find your customized report and in it's header will be "derived from xxx" where xxx is a guid. Tell me the guid and I can tell you the report you started with.
15:26:43 <systemdlete> "exposing unsupported OSes to the net" -- ???
15:27:18 <systemdlete> devuan is most certainly supported. Do you mean gnucash is not supported on devuan?
15:27:24 <systemdlete> and why?
15:27:41 <systemdlete> I mean, that's kind of important if you are not supporting devuan.
15:28:40 <jralls> No, your version--buster--is no longer supported with security updates.
15:29:06 <systemdlete> I don't have saved-reports-2.8; mine is saved-reports-2.4. I have a feeling that might be the problem.
15:29:31 <systemdlete> I started using gnucash about 15 years ago.
15:29:36 <systemdlete> or maybe 10, idr.
15:29:52 <systemdlete> it's been a long time
15:30:44 <systemdlete> debian might not be supporting buster. But devuan is still supporting beowulf (buster)
15:30:48 <jralls> Huh. I'd think GnuCash would have written updated saved-reports files as part of upgrading.
15:30:51 <systemdlete> but that's beside th epoint.
15:31:13 <systemdlete> that's what I'd figure alos
15:31:16 <systemdlete> also
15:31:34 <systemdlete> is there a way to manually upgrade them?
15:31:41 <systemdlete> safely I mean?
15:31:56 <jralls> Edit and resave should do it.
15:32:45 <systemdlete> do you mean edit from the menu "edit"? or do you mean open options and save?
15:32:54 <systemdlete> (sorry, just need to be clear)
15:33:09 <systemdlete> like edit->preferences, save, etc
15:33:55 <jralls> Open Reports>Saved Report Configurations, pick a saved report. In the three icons on the right click the middle one. Make some minor change, click OK.
15:35:57 <jralls> Or having changed the options on the report you're complaining about click Save Config As in the toolbar and give it a new name.
15:36:02 <systemdlete> when I click the middle button, the name of the report is highlighted in a text box.
15:36:56 <jralls> Yeah, and changing that will be enough to make GnuCash save a new saved-reports-2.8.
15:37:12 <systemdlete> it doesn't though
15:37:15 <systemdlete> still 2.4
15:39:14 <jralls> Huh. Well, let's go with the original problem first. The guid should still be in the file.
15:40:13 <systemdlete> general ledger
15:40:23 <systemdlete> 2e22929e5c5b4b769f615a815ef0c20f
15:41:29 <systemdlete> so I could start with a fresh g/l report and modify accordingly then?
15:42:14 <jralls> That's worth trying, but it really shouldn't matter. What exactly are you trying to filter?
15:43:24 <jralls> I wanted to know the starting report so that I can look at what options it has.
15:43:45 <systemdlete> I only get 2 tabs, not 5
15:44:13 <systemdlete> I am trying to filter on account (I mean the OTHER account, not the one I am reporting on)
15:44:35 <systemdlete> I hope some distinction will be made in the future, because it is a bit confusing
15:45:34 <jralls> You have only 2 tabs in the saved report's options or the general ledger report's options?
15:45:59 <systemdlete> g/l report options. I didn't save it yet
15:46:33 <systemdlete> weird. tried this a second time, and now I get 5 tabs!
15:48:37 <jralls> You should have 5 tabs. Maybe you opened general journal the first time, it's options dialog has only two tabs.
15:49:13 <jralls> s/it's/its/
15:49:25 <systemdlete> ooops. sorry. Yeah, I did that.
15:49:47 <jralls> NP. So you're trying to use the filter function on the accounts tab, right?
15:49:54 <systemdlete> but now if I set the account name filter, it errors
15:49:57 <systemdlete> right
15:50:09 <systemdlete> as I said above, the transaction filter works ok
15:50:22 <systemdlete> but I (think I) need the account name filter
15:50:43 <systemdlete> I want to display only transactions that touch the other account
15:51:42 <systemdlete> A newer gnucash is available in the backports for beowulf(buster)
15:52:00 <jralls> Do you have entries in the transaction filter page? What selections did you make in the accounts page? What error did you get?
15:52:29 <systemdlete> I am just concerned that it could wreak havoc with other things in the system, being it will upgrade a lot of other packages
15:52:53 <systemdlete> In the accounts tab, I selected a liability account.
15:53:27 <systemdlete> in the filter tab, I am only filling in the account name filter
15:53:55 <systemdlete> The error is that no accounts were selected--I thought that was what the selection in the acounts tab was for
15:54:36 <systemdlete> oh crappa, jralls!
15:54:48 <systemdlete> Instaed of using the filter field in fitlers tab
15:54:56 <systemdlete> I can use the filtering in the accounts tab
15:55:02 <systemdlete> and it looks like it works!
15:55:44 <jralls> OK, good.
15:56:10 <systemdlete> so... what is the account name filter for under the filter tab?
15:59:03 <jralls> I think it might be something weird like filtering the accounts selected in the top section of the accounts tab. Give me a minute to experiment.
15:59:51 <systemdlete> ah, I see.
16:01:03 <systemdlete> yeah... I guess the transaction filter for the other report was filtering the top section of the accounts tab.
16:02:12 <systemdlete> anyway, thank you for your help
16:02:39 <jralls> Yes, that's what it does. I think that an odd design choice, but I guess it's quicker than picking accounts out of the tree, especially if you have a big tree.
16:02:40 <systemdlete> I'll be upgrading my beowulf/buster system in the next months or so.
16:03:50 <systemdlete> jralls, did you try filtering on an account from a different section of the chart of accounts? My report account was an asset, but the account I was trying to filter was in liabilities.
16:04:18 <systemdlete> again, it works fine when using the filtering on the accounts tab
16:05:04 <jralls> Reports don't work that way. The report accounts are the ones selected in the accounts page of report options, completely independent of whatever register has focus.
16:05:30 <warlord> The exception is the Account Report or Account Transaction Report.
16:06:04 <jralls> So if you picked Liablitities:Credit Card and put Bank in Filters Account Name the result is "No account selected".
16:06:49 <systemdlete> Oh I know that the report is not nec connected to the account in focus.
16:08:33 <jralls> So I must misunderstand your question.
16:09:28 <jralls> Or maybe you still don't get that the Account filter on the filters tab is filtering the account selection, not the transaction transfer account.
16:09:29 <systemdlete> so under accounts tab of the report options, I picked an asset account. Then in the filters tab, I entered the fully qualified name of the liability account I wanted to filter
16:10:39 <jralls> With the result that no accounts are selected, because the liability account isn't among the Asset account's you had selected.
16:11:17 <systemdlete> so it might be useful if I were to select multiple accounts in the accounts tab?
16:12:47 <jralls> It might be useful if you selected all asset accounts on the accounts tab and wanted to limit the report to showing only those with a particular name, or more usefully, those whose names match a regular expression.
16:13:20 <systemdlete> so multiple selections
16:13:48 <systemdlete> ok, I'll try to remember that
16:14:15 <jralls> On the display tab turn on "from account" and "to account" so you can see what accounts are sourcing the transactions and experiment a little.
16:14:38 <systemdlete> so maybe a credit card report, select liabilities and match on something like "credit card" or the like
16:14:55 <jralls> Teah,
16:15:02 <jralls> sigh. Yeah.
16:15:06 <systemdlete> ok, I think I am getting the idea.
16:15:08 <systemdlete> np
16:15:16 <systemdlete> again, thank you so much for your help
16:15:24 <jralls> You're welcome.
