05:11:25 <chris> jralls: not sure what's happened to my ubuntu profile. there are now regular test failures - test-owner-report will find the /usr/share/guile... and fail. this is likely caused by 7cae61d97a.

10:49:45 <j5mill> I have unrealized losses on my balance sheet, which is expected since I deal with multiple currencies, but I can't figure out how to realize the losses. Normally I would transfer the amount from the unrealized losses account into a income/expense account to realize them, but the unrealized losses account does not exist in my accounts list so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to go about it.
10:52:22 <j5mill> Also, the instructions on https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/IRC say to connect to irc.gimp.net which does not work. You get an error saying the ssl cert domain does not match the connection domain.
10:53:17 <j5mill> Thanks for any help.

13:28:21 <jralls> j5mill You have to create the account yourself. It's normally an income account (credit balance) with losses booked as debits. If you're dealing with multiple currencies you probably will benefit from turning on trading accounts. See the relevant sections in the Guide. As for irc.gimp.net's SSL cert, nothing we can do about it here besides hope that they get it sorted soon.

15:30:59 <j5mill> I did try creating the account, but it's still at a 0 balance even though the balance sheet report shows a top level "Unrealized Losses" account. It seems to be the accumulated difference between what I got for my currency conversions versus what I "should have" gotten. Maybe I need to create the unrealised losses account before adding the transactions? Just really hoping that I'm not going to need to go fiddle with every currency conversion transaction
15:31:01 <j5mill> to get it fixed
15:31:35 <j5mill> Anyway, thank you for the advice, I'll keep fiddling with it until I figure it out
15:32:29 <j5mill> I checked the documentation but it didn't seem to acknowledge any top level unrealized losses account or how to deal with it
15:33:59 *** palerider has joined #gnucash
15:35:13 <j5mill> To maybe give you a better idea of what's happening, it seems like the only way I can affect the number is by creating a cross currency transaction.
15:36:18 <Simon> that's not an account, just a line on the report
15:36:52 <j5mill> I know it is, but how can I move the amount there to realize the losses? For double entry accounting to work it has to come from somewhere.
15:37:00 <j5mill> *amount from there
15:37:36 <Simon> my balance sheet shows unrealised gains and I probably couldn't find all of them
15:37:54 <jralls> j5mill, that's not a real account, it's a calculated value in the report. Just creating the real account isn't enough, you also have to create the gain/loss splits either in the currency conversion transactions or in their own transactions. See https://code.gnucash.org/docs/C/gnucash-guide/chapter_currency.html
15:38:14 <Simon> you may discover you actually have unrealised losses
15:38:30 <Simon> you can select the accounts used for the report to narrow it down
15:41:19 *** palerider has left #gnucash
15:42:53 <Simon> one of the figures for unrealised gains/losses on my balance sheet report make any sense...
15:43:20 <Simon> I deselected investments and it still shows me a large value
15:45:05 <Simon> this probably needs an extra column showing the value per account to debug
15:46:57 <j5mill> I think I have some insight into what's going on in my case. I'm going to reread the currency guide and see if I can figure out how to fix it
15:48:36 <j5mill> Basically my foreign currency deposits get recorded to my home currency "sales" account, but then I don't actually move and convert the amounts from that foreign currency account to my local currency account until later
15:49:18 <j5mill> So the discrepancy between exchange rates at those two times is causing the unrealized gains to be reported
15:49:33 <j5mill> But I still don't quite understand how to fix that
15:49:49 <j5mill> I'm sure I'll figure it out with some thought though now that I know the problem
16:03:35 <fell> The unrealized line is just informative: If you would sell everything, for recent mare
16:04:04 <fell> market values you would end with …
16:04:51 <fell> If you should record them in your books depends on the rules of your government.
16:06:48 <fell> But usually they are only recorded on realization.
