23:25:17 <Robert847> Hi. I am looking for information about requirements for file format for csv transaction imports. Right now GnuCash 4.8 seems to be unable to import dates formatted as "30-Dec-2022". If I need to massage these dates in a spreadsheet, what should I change them to?
23:30:57 <Robert847> Does GnuCash accept three letter months?
23:35:08 *** ChanServ sets mode: +v NoobAlice
23:35:51 <NoobAlice> I would guess you should go for DD/MM/YYYY format, all numbers not letters, if that is the default date format for your region. I'm in a MM/DD/YYYY region and used that.
23:36:44 <NoobAlice> If you're importing into an existing GnuCash file, remember to save a copy of it as backup first. You can't undo an import.
23:37:08 <NoobAlice> See also https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-guide/importing-from-files.html#importing-csv

23:52:23 <Robert847> Thanks NoobAlice. I missed that page when I looked through the Tutorial, but it doesn't say whether dates must be in some all-numeric form anyway. Now I will have to research how flexible LibreOffice is with transforming date formats.
23:54:23 <NoobAlice> It should be pretty easy. If I type that date "30-Dec-2022" into a cell, LO Calc automatically changes it to my local date format 12/30/22 .
23:54:33 <NoobAlice> *LO Calc = LibreOffice Calc
23:54:40 <Robert847> This is my first time trying to import from a certain financial institution, while they are generally very good, I was surprised to see dates in that form in a csv export.
23:55:09 <Robert847> this is a US company, too
23:55:46 <NoobAlice> Hmm. That format does avoid ambiguity about whether 2/5/2022 is May 2 or Feb 5.
23:57:35 <Robert847> They would be smart enough to think about that potential ambiguity
