12:57:29 <palerider> I have a question, if I may, I'm having problems entering transactions, where I have a description that matches a previous transaction that was split. When I enter that same description again, I get the whole split transaction repopulated, and I don't know an easy way to not have that happen.
12:57:35 <palerider> for instance, last week, I had a deposit that came from several sources. today I want to make the same named deposit, (transfer from paypal) but with only one source, even if I start by filling in the accounts and numbers, when I go back and put in 'transfer from paypal', it wipes out what I just put in, and copies the old split into that space.
12:58:34 <palerider> I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, I just need a hint :)

13:17:16 <Simon> Edit the description in some way after it autocompletes, before pressing tab
13:17:37 *** yagiooda has quit IRC
13:18:23 <Simon> e.g. "transfer<end><left arrow><tab>" I think? These things become muscle memory :/
13:18:55 <Simon> If you press tab with an autocompletes description it will autocomplete everything else
13:19:01 <Simon> autocompleted*
13:19:22 <palerider> Ok, so Ok, so just don't tab out of the description, click on another field instead... why didn't I think of that?
13:19:27 <Simon> There's a knack to getting the rest of the description without the second part
13:19:45 <palerider> Indeed, thank you.
13:19:53 <Simon> I think just editing it in any way will let you press tab
13:20:16 <Simon> Editing may include just pressing the end key
13:20:36 <palerider> the tab completion is a nice thing, but sometimes it's a really bad thing. I kinda wish it was an optional keystroke to autocomplete the rest of the entry.
13:20:47 <Simon> Well it kind of is
13:20:58 <Simon> I think end does that
13:21:10 <Simon> and tab autocompletes everything
13:21:14 <palerider> End didn't work just now. it still filled in everything.
13:21:32 <Simon> There's definitely a way to get the rest of the description without doing that
13:21:52 <palerider> I could put a space on the end.
13:21:55 <Simon> I use it a lot for two transactions with almost the same description going to two different accounts
13:21:57 <palerider> (after end)
13:22:13 <Simon> End followed by editing it perhaps?
13:23:11 <palerider> One of my files has many duplicate entries, so the autocomplete is handy, $13.23 from here, $13.23 from there, etc. the other, while stuff filters in through paypal, can be a lot more varied.
13:23:14 <Simon> I don't think I leave it at exactly the same description so I'm not sure but I think if you've managed to edit it without retriggering autocomplete you can do it
13:24:18 <palerider> actually, if I start typing, it'll fill in the whole description, then I click into the transfer field, instead of tabbing to it, and it doesn't fill in the previous matching descriptions split.
13:24:21 <palerider> so that's a win.
13:24:49 <palerider> Thank you.
13:25:31 <Simon> Fairly sure there's also a way to do it entirely from the keyboard
13:26:04 <palerider> all I'm fairly sure is that this software has a lot of capabilities I'm not aware of :D
13:26:20 <palerider> but that this channel has been very helpful in the past.

13:39:38 <Simon> ok... I can't press tab without it autocompleting the rest of the transaction
13:39:49 <Simon> it has to be a different description to do that
13:40:19 *** yagiooda has joined #gnucash
13:40:23 <Simon> be aware that it is the entire transaction that is automatically entered, which may be more than a simple 2 split transaction :)
13:40:29 *** gjanssens has quit IRC
13:40:46 <palerider> That's what I was finding, I'm ok with mousing over to the next field.
13:41:05 <Simon> (editing the amount can then lead to a imbalance if there are extra splits)
13:41:17 <palerider> Oh yeah, I've fought with some of those where the previous transaction had 5 or 6 accounts in the split.
13:43:23 <palerider> the end of a long night after our monthly club meeting, looking at a wad of cash and all the receipts "where did all this come from again?" :D
13:43:42 <palerider> Then having to undo all that when tab helpfully copies the split.
13:43:51 <palerider> Anyway, thank you for your help!

17:54:14 <Kaligula> warlord. What I've learnt, the bot I was talking about was an ooold Irssi plugin based on a polish dev's ('qrczak') script "seen.pl". As I look into the code it's Perl, I think. And indeed it worked similar to at-tell. When one typed "seen nick" the bot told when that nick was last seen; and when the nick connected next time he was informed that someone asked for him. (And the script has many variations of "seen", incl. "seen?" "
17:54:15 <Kaligula> "seen!" "when nick was seen?" etc., also in Polish).
18:03:40 <Kaligula> warlord. I wonder if our gncbot's "seen" works the same.
18:08:47 <Kaligula> seen Kaligula
18:08:52 <Kaligula> @seen Kaligula

18:09:32 *** palerider has left #gnucash
18:10:45 <Kaligula> The script I talk about worked like = [gncbot's "seen"] + ½ [gncbot's "tell"]
18:10:47 <Kaligula> I think
18:10:50 <warlord> :)
18:12:10 <Kaligula> So there was no real magic behind… just my forgetfulness ( ' ^_^)
