13:44:46 <Plane_Talk> Hello all :) I want to start my own business and here in the uk we have to use "Making Tax Digital (MTD)". Does GnuCash support this or will it in the future? Thankyou
13:49:58 <jralls> Plane_Talk, not directly. There are apparently some online tools that can import CSVs and connect to HMRC for MTD filings. This has been discussed on and off in the gnucash-user mailing list.
13:53:43 <jralls> You can search "site:lists.gnucash.org making tax digital" to find the discussions.

14:33:24 <Plane_Talk> Is there any bridging software that will live with gnucash like 100PcVatFreeBridge or something?
14:35:21 <Plane_Talk> I tried going to the archives to find discussiona about "Making Tax Digital" but there is a huge amount to go through and no search tool
14:36:03 <Plane_Talk> If anyone could point me in the right direction, Iwould be eternally grateful :D
14:36:37 <warlord> Plane_Talk, as far as I know, there is no direct code "bridge". It's a manual export / import / transport.
14:37:20 *** Gandalf has joined #gnucash
14:37:30 <jralls> There aren't any UK users on the channel to help you. You can pass the string I gave earlier to use your favorite search engine to search the mailing lists.
14:37:43 <Plane_Talk> oh so i can export to "whatever they say" and then send it?
14:38:05 <warlord> Plane_Talk, no, not directly.
14:38:26 <Plane_Talk> there is a transport layer issue?
14:39:05 <jralls> Yeah. GnuCash doesn't have one.
14:39:23 <Plane_Talk> what and they require it?
14:40:03 <jralls> Last I checked one is required to send packets over the net.

14:40:59 <Plane_Talk> not sure how it works
14:42:43 <jralls> IIUC the MTD sites work by you uploading a CSV. The site munges it into whatever HMRC wants and sends it to HMRC. Apparently GnuCash can export CSVs that meet the website's needs.
14:43:06 <jralls> The details are buried in the mailing list exchanges.
14:44:25 <jralls> You might also find the wee bit at https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GB/HMRC#Third-party_tools helpful.
14:48:32 <Plane_Talk> jralls thankyou, thats's given me a direction :D
14:49:01 <jralls> Plane_Talk, you're welcome.
14:51:03 <Plane_Talk> I do wonder though why gnucash does not support nor endorse any. That worries me and I would love to know the reasoning, especially if it's security related ;)

14:54:17 <jralls> Several reasons, beginning with GnuCash isn't country-specific. It's all discussed in excrutiating detail in the mailing list.
14:56:04 <jralls> Nor are the GnuCash team in any way competent to evaluate the available bridge products.
14:56:30 <jralls> If it worries you then you probably want a UK-specific non-Free program.
15:01:56 <Plane_Talk> Sorry, didn't mean worry as in not trust anyone, more like distrust of hmrc pushing at least certain apps, I get what you're saying. It's outside of scope
15:02:55 <jralls> Plus HMRC requires a secret key that's incompatible with Free software.
15:03:17 <Plane_Talk> I did not know that
15:03:32 <Plane_Talk> :/
15:05:24 <warlord> Plane_Talk, yeah, they require an OAuth Client Key, which is a secret key embedded in the software.. But as jralls says, that is incompatible with OSS.
