03:34:28 <chris> jralls: ok nonetheless it's still noticeably slower on my beefy win32 than on my 10yr old thinkpad
03:39:48 <chris> with WSL2 on Win11 there's still a VNC-type transport from X to WinUI

12:31:38 <jralls> chris, the performance is probably due to the HiDPI monitor on the new laptop. Of the Gtk3 backends only Wayland got proper attention for managing HiDPI. I've been up to my neck in trying to fix that for macOS for the last 6 weeks, see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/3714.
12:34:31 <jralls> As for WSL2 I think if you've got the build going you're set for a dev environment, just use emacs on the sources as usual. VNC doesn't count as an abstraction, it's just a way of displaying one computer's video on another computer. You could also install an XServer on Win32 and use that to connect to your WSL2 session.

21:57:57 <Robert847> I am testing the Windows > New Window menu choice in release 3.8 in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. It opened a new blank maximized window which got the focus. After getting bored I foud the that I could un-maximize that window and find and switch to the previous window underneath, which seems to be fully functional. The new window cannot be closed.
21:59:28 <Robert847> Htop reports 8 GnuCash threads, no swap file usage and about 60 % total RAM use, for whatever that is worth.
22:01:46 <Robert847> Do I need to close GniCAsh to get rid of that extra blank window?
22:41:20 <Robert847> 40 minutes later the blank window is still blank and uncloseable.

22:45:12 <Robert847> By the way, Htop says GnuCash has been assigned 87.2 G of Virt. Is that Bytes of memory?
22:45:28 <NoobAlice> Robert847: Just tried on Arch Linux. I can open a new window, then open reports and such in that. Then I can close it. No issues here.
22:46:07 <NoobAlice> If I were you, I'd save your work, quit GnuCash completely, and see if Htop shows things going back to normal.
22:46:34 <NoobAlice> (I'm just a user, not a dev.)
22:47:21 <Robert847> I will do that when I get even more bored than I am now.
22:47:52 <NoobAlice> But I'm also on current GnuCash 4.9. Have you looked at the bug list for something like that for 3.8?
22:50:35 <NoobAlice> I'm not seeing anything relevant, but I'm bad at Bugzilla searches.
22:50:51 <Robert847> No, but I have had an issue with this particular computer using up all of it's 8 Gig of RAM, throwing GnuCash into swap, then GnuCash is stuck there. That is not the case this time as I am finding ways to avoid running out of RAM.
22:53:09 <Robert847> Still working on better memory management, tho
22:59:43 <Robert847> I am not comfortable with Snap-Store until I know if that is why this machine likes to eat RAM for lunch. So I am trying to understand that now before I let it run any more of my apps.
23:00:26 <NoobAlice> I know nothing of Snap or memory. Good luck in your hunt. :)
23:07:45 <Robert847> NoobAlice: How much RAM does your Arch Linux machine have?
23:08:45 <NoobAlice> I think 8GB.
23:09:24 <NoobAlice> Neofetch says Memory: 2993MiB / 7824MiB , which I think is RAM.
23:10:36 <Robert847> I don't have neofetch on this Ubuntu machine
23:11:36 <NoobAlice> Task Manager (Xfce) says "Memory: 43% (3.3 GiB / 7.6 GiB)"
23:12:06 <NoobAlice> You don't need it. It just gives some quick stat stuff that is just neat to see.
