08:09:11 <warlord> It definitely helps to have the correct -devel packages installed!
08:19:49 <chris> but these were not required before the ubuntu upgrade
08:21:13 * warlord shrugs
08:26:44 <warlord> Perhaps they split them out from something else -- or a meta-package was broken?
08:28:37 *** sbluhm has quit IRC
08:37:43 <chris> funnily enough setting the environment with nix did work well. I wonder if warlord has any experience in nix stuff...
08:44:44 <warlord> Sorry, what is "nix"?
08:59:24 <chris> functional package management... gets reproducible builds.
09:01:08 <warlord> No such thing exists...
09:01:15 <warlord> Well, not true -- it works for something like BuildRoot.
09:01:24 <warlord> So long as one can find historical versions of dependencies.
09:09:41 <chris> the vision is "one package manager to rule them all..."
09:10:27 <chris> except the reality is there's also guix, the gnu version of it
09:15:09 <warlord> there is not and never will be one package manager to rule them all.
09:16:01 <warlord> You have 6 ways to do something. Someone comes along and says "let me build something that will combine all those into one over-arching system," The result? You now have SEVEN ways to do something.
09:16:05 <warlord> Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

09:31:21 <chris> i think the reproducibility doesn't mean the old dependencies are guaranteed available, but they are hashed ergo trustworthy (IIUC)

09:35:37 <warlord> BuildRoot does that.

14:45:35 <a11> Hello everyone! Question: Is it possible to generate custom saved reports through gnucash-cli?
15:16:56 <jralls_afk> I think so, as of GnuCash 4.6.
15:17:09 *** sbluhm has joined #gnucash
15:18:12 <a11> Thanks for the reply! How is that done by using --name parameter and use the custom report name?
15:18:45 <jralls_afk> It would be IIUC gjanssens's commit from June.

15:20:47 <jralls_afk> You can run gnucash-cli -R list to see all of the report names available.
15:22:13 <gjanssens> jralls_afk, a11: report saving is probably implemented by chris rather than me
15:22:30 <gjanssens> Or I'm misremembering :)

15:24:25 <jralls_afk> But maybe I misunderstood all's use of "generate": I took it to mean to create an exported custom report to be displayed in one's browser.
15:25:46 *** kcin1 has joined #gnucash
15:26:04 <a11> Yes My goal is to use gnucash-cli to run a custom report I've saved.
15:26:10 *** kcin has quit IRC
15:27:23 <a11> Just not sure how I can configure it to run the custom report.
15:28:14 *** kcin1 is now known as kcin
15:29:47 <a11> I see the default list with `gnucash-cli -R list` and successfully ran Income Statement report
15:29:54 *** sbluhm has quit IRC
15:34:52 <jralls_afk> You should see your customized reports on the list with a C next to them. Run gnucash-cli -R show --name report-name; that will show along with what's changed the GUID of the modified report, which you can use as the argument to --name to run it.

15:44:43 <a11> Awesome! I got the custom report to generate!
15:45:24 <a11> I get it back in html form is there away to get it as PDF as in the GUI?
15:45:48 <a11> I guess if that is not available I can use other tools to convert html -> pdf
15:47:35 <Joc> in the report tab, there is a ¨make pdf¨ at the top right
15:49:37 <a11> Yes I in the GUI there is a button but I'm trying to usr the CLI to automate report generation
15:49:51 <a11> I tried `--export-type=pdf` to no avail
15:50:23 <Joc> that I don´t know.
15:50:40 <a11> Thanks anyways
15:50:55 <a11> At least for now I have the report as a webpage and use other tools to convert it
15:51:38 <a11> Appreciate All the hard work the Team has put in!
15:53:05 <Joc> definitely second that, and the support we get here, got helped many times.

17:04:44 <a11> So just an update on converting the custom report html -> pdf
17:05:44 <a11> I tried using wkhtmltopdf for the conversion and it worked for the most part aside from my chart image not showing in the pdf
17:06:16 <a11> Looking at the generated html looks like chartjs is used by gnucash to generate the charts
17:06:52 <a11> Apparently wkhtmltopdf has issues with rendering chartjs charts... https://github.com/wkhtmltopdf/wkhtmltopdf/issues/3796
17:08:10 <a11> Can we get option to export the custom report output as pdf format? This behavior seems available in the GUI already.
17:27:31 <fell> How about 'Print to PDF'?
17:31:48 <a11> You mean in the browser? Doing print -> save to pdf in the browser works (has the chart)
17:32:19 <a11> I was looking for way to automate this without using the any GUI
