05:38:56 <gjanssens> jralls: It looks like you figured the docker stuff out yourself. Great!
05:39:39 <gjanssens> Do you think we should switch to all docker-based ci for ease of maintenance and consistency ?

14:00:34 <jralls> gjanssens, I wasn't able to get github to load the ubuntu-based dockers. Notice also that the javascript tests run twice as fast: ci-tests runs both ubuntu 18 and 20, ci-tests-docker runs just archlinux. There's no timing info but from my failed attempts yesterday it looks like about half the time went for setting up the container.

14:12:28 <jralls> gjanssens, I'd also like to get macOS and Win32 CI workflows set up and IIUC windows is possible, macOS not so much. ISTM running javascript workflows directly for both will be more straightforward, though both depend on being able to cache the environment to be practical for CI.

21:06:39 <chris> CDB-Man_ the invisible-split idea for capgains won't work... because BUY txns will want to capitalize the Fees and the latter will also be an invisible split. Better: expose the capgain balancing split, which can also act as the BUY fee.
21:13:53 *** CDB-PHONE has quit IRC
21:40:25 <chris> hmm another way to proceed is to allow the Fee amount to be EXPENSE or STOCK
21:41:20 <chris> the question is whether to enforce the sell fee=expensed and buy fee=capitalized, or allow it be loose
21:43:16 <chris> hmm another way to proceed is to allow the Fee amount to be EXPENSE or STOCK: stock split would have value=fee, amount=0
21:55:32 <chris> i think the solution is a binary option enabled when fees are possible: capitalize vs expensed.
22:26:58 <CDB-Work> the invisible-split idea for capgains won't work... <-- chris not sure what you mean
22:27:22 <chris> Don't worry I found my answer
22:27:41 <CDB-Work> there has to be a no-unit split into the stock account, otherwise the stock account won't clear to zero after you sell everything
22:27:50 <CDB-Work> (for the capgain)
22:27:59 <chris> 1) if capgains is enabled, a zero-amount stock split will always be created
22:28:32 <chris> 2) fees will have option "capitalize?" to create zero-amount stock split, or create expense split
22:28:35 <chris> Problem solved

22:47:28 <Robert847> Hi Gnucash 2.6.19 has been running fine in Ubuntu 18.04 for ages. Suddenly tonight it crashed when I clicked on Tools > Price Editor > Get quotes. Then when I re-started it it failed to produce reports that were open when it crashed, instead displaying the error message "Error opening file //tmp/gnc-report-FINKT0.html: No such file or directory" in the report window. As far as I know, the only change was allowing some software
22:47:30 <Robert847> s to proceed.

22:56:07 <Robert847> There are some reports inthe //tmp directory but they have weird time stamps nd I cannot view them with Firefox or Chromium
23:06:53 *** CDB-PHONE has joined #gnucash
23:06:53 *** ChanServ sets mode: +v CDB-PHONE
23:06:55 <Robert847> The time stamps are around 12:12 AM this morning, which may be around the last time I was able to see the reports. there is also a trace file with three entries similar to "* 00:11:59 WARN <gnc.report.core> Report specified id of 3 is already is use. Using generated id."
23:08:24 <Robert847> Last, there is a a file named ".X1024-lock" with a time stamp consistent with those other files
23:09:30 <Robert847> And tihis is after re-starting GnuCash at about 9:30 pm local time
23:09:36 <CDB-Work> you might want to come back in the AM on EST timezone
23:16:06 <Robert847> I copied one of those reports to a location that is visible to a different computer. That computer was able to to open the html file and it appeared to be good. I am about ready to try re-booting the Ubuntu computer.
23:19:01 *** TommyT has quit IRC
23:20:54 <Robert847> GnuCash seems to be functioning normally in other account windows. I will check the price editor after testing the file save function
23:24:20 <Robert847> It seems that Gnucash is not creating any files in the tmp directory, so I am not sure what it can do correctly
23:41:15 <Robert847> While re-booting Ubuntu it threw several unusual error messages
23:49:46 <Robert847> It won't re-boot. It says it needs a manual fsck
23:49:54 <Robert847> whatever that means
