09:12:56 <Guest91> Hi
09:14:14 <Guest91> I have two invoices, but I received a single payment from my client for both, and my bank statement reflects that. How do I merge them together?
09:16:10 <Guest91> Sorry
09:16:25 <Guest91> I meant, how can I associate the single transaction with the two invoices?
09:17:42 *** qwer has quit IRC
09:20:17 *** qwer has joined #gnucash
09:20:43 <warlord> Guest91, Process Payment for the total amount and choose both invoices for the payment; the system will split it between those two invoices but leave one transaction in your bank account.
09:21:36 <Guest91> Oh! I can choose two invoices for payment?
09:22:59 <warlord> Yes, in the Process Payment dialog you can choose multiple invoices.
09:24:21 *** qwer has quit IRC
09:25:41 *** psusi has joined #gnucash
09:26:11 <psusi> the manual says that there is an account type for income and one for expenses, but when I go to create an account, those are not listed in the choice for account type. How do I make them?
09:29:58 <Guest91> warlord: thank you, I was able to select both invoices
09:30:45 *** Mechtilde has quit IRC
09:30:48 <warlord> psusi, you can only create the account types based on the parent account type. Income and Expense cannot go under e.g. Asset or Liability. I recommend you use the New File Hierarchy assistant and choose a default account tree to begin, instead of starting from an empty tree.
09:30:49 <Guest91> By the way, I tried a new option called "Assign as Payment", but there was a bug
09:31:00 <warlord> Guest91, you are welcome.
09:31:03 <warlord> What was the bug
09:31:03 <warlord> ?
09:31:45 <Guest91> It did not take the currency into account, the invoice was for USD but the account currency was different, but it treated the amount as USD in the process payment page
09:32:20 <Guest91> So I created a new payment and replaced the details from original bank transaction and deleted it
09:32:26 <warlord> That does not surprise me. This is why you should Process Payment, and not Assign.
09:32:45 <Guest91> Yes, but assign should be easier if not for this bug
09:33:26 <psusi> warlord: they can't be sub accounts? hrm.. I did also try creating it as a top level account and still don't get those choices...
09:33:44 <warlord> psusi, Of course they can be sub-accounts, but only of a top-level Income/Expense account.
09:34:00 *** chris has quit IRC
09:34:02 <warlord> So you can have Expenses:Groceries or Income:Salary:MyJob
09:34:25 <psusi> I was thinking I should model my brokerage account as a top level with sub-accounts for: 1) transfers in, 2) expenses/fees, 3) each stock symbol, 4) cash balance
09:34:36 <warlord> Guest91, there are lots of corner cases with multiple currencies, especially in the biz features because they were originally single-currency-only.

09:35:20 <warlord> psusi, you can't do that. Sorry. You can model it as the asset holding (with cash and different funds), but the income/expense parts need to be in a different section of the account tree.
09:35:49 <Guest91> warlord
09:35:58 <Guest91> warlord: understandable...

09:37:22 <psusi> hrm... odd.. only after I created a bank account with an initial balance and the program created an "Opening Balances" account for me do I now get the option to create accounts as either income or expense
09:37:23 <warlord> The original developer of the biz features was. (namely, me) :)

09:37:51 <warlord> psusi, you could always create a top-level income/expense account.

09:39:17 <psusi> yep
09:40:34 <psusi> hrm... odd... I swear I tried that thinking that could be the problem, but I started over and now I can't reproduce it
09:40:55 <warlord> Hmm.. I suspect you had an existing account selected and not the "new top-level"
09:41:09 <Guest91> warlord: Oh!... nice
09:42:11 *** Mechtilde has joined #gnucash
09:43:09 <warlord> I wrote it for myself, but tried to make it generic. But yes, it was inherently single-currency-at-a-time. It COULD handle multiple currencies, but not "simultaneously". Any currency translation had to happen outside the invoices/payments.
09:44:26 <Guest91> Thank you for the contribution, I can understand that it can be hard to implement a "perfect" system in a complex program like GnuCash
09:44:54 <warlord> Indeed. It's a work of love spanning multiple decades. (I wrote that code back in like 2002)
09:45:10 <Guest91> Wow
09:45:17 <Guest91> That is a long time ago now :)

09:49:07 <warlord> psusi, and once you do that, it should enable all account types from the top level :)
09:49:34 <warlord> There are generally three groups: Equity, Asset/Liability (and those sub-types), and Income/Expense

09:55:21 <Guest91> psusi: Importing is easier if you do it in a format like QIF etc.

09:56:06 <psusi> csv

09:58:47 <warlord> GnuCash can import from CSV, but it helps if you have your account tree already in place.
09:59:21 <psusi> it just seems to say that withdrawl or deposit must be defined, not what they mean or why
09:59:48 <psusi> I've set up the tree and initial cash balance... now I'm trying to import all of the trades

10:24:49 <warlord> I dont know if the importer will import stock transactions.
10:26:55 <psusi> yea, it seems to be totally broken.. it lets you select a column for action and price but then completely ignores them... it just sets the price for all transactions to 1 and treats them all as buys even though many say sell
10:27:06 <psusi> damn...
10:27:33 <psusi> also it created an "imbalance" account to transfer the shares "from"
10:28:10 <psusi> if I'm buying shares, they aren't transfering from anywhere.. I'm exchanging money for shares... it should debit the cash account $ and credit the stock account in shares, shouldn't it?
10:29:30 <warlord> Well, you do have to tell it what the cash account is where you are buying the shares. The importer cannot guess.
10:29:55 <warlord> You're honestly better off importing via QIF if you can get your hands on some.
10:30:05 <warlord> Or just start from scratch and ignore your history.
10:33:41 <psusi> I did tell it
