06:08:20 <Hamaryns> hi all, just installed 3.10 via flatpak in Linux Mint, but it cannot find my external usb hard drive, even though I can see it in the file manager. Any idea?
06:08:20 <gncbot> Hamaryns: Sent 21 weeks, 1 day, 2 hours, and 15 minutes ago: <sbluhm> before I switched to libdbd, I used Gnucash (v2) exclusively via cifs and never had any significant issues (apart from the general performance back then). So it definetely used to work.

06:34:41 <cryptoasker> Hello. I spent some time trying to configuring gnucash to fetch cryptocurrencies prices, but with no luck
06:34:56 <cryptoasker> i followed the suggestion on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/GnuCash/comments/eixe0e/gnucash_to_include_cryptocurrency_assets/fcu2hnk/
06:35:34 <cryptoasker> But after installing everything, i don't seem to be able to fetch crypto prices
06:37:37 <cryptoasker> the security editor only allow me to add AMEX, EUREX etc, but nothing more. I correctly added my API key and installed Finance::Quote, but i'm stuck there. Any hint of what i am doing wrong?
06:38:51 <cryptoasker> If i try `gnc-fq-dump -v alphavantage BTC` i get This stock quote cannot be used by GnuCash! but i can retrieve the BTC price using the browser and my API key just fine

07:08:08 <cryptoasker> Doesn't matter what i do, but i don't seem to be able to fetch any stock, only currencies ;/
07:13:19 <cryptoasker> Ok, i managed to have `gnc-fq-dump` showing the BTC price, but i still cannot get gnucash to work with cryptocurrencies

07:50:35 <gjanssens> @tell Hamaryns Flatpak limits the file system locations you are allowed to access by default. The way to work around this is to call 'sudo flatpak override org.gnucash.GnuCash --filesystem=<path-to-your-usb>'.

12:54:53 <jralls> cryptotasker: Alphavantage has different APIs for government currencies and cryptocurrencies. AFAIK Finance::Quote does not have code to query the latter.
12:56:48 <jralls> FH_thecat: No, you can't remove columns from the register display, nor is it likely that we'll change that any time soon. You can resize the column to 1 px so that it doesn't take up screen space but that won't do anything for tabbing except make the cursor disappear, which you might find confusing.

15:34:13 <jralls> warlord gjanssens fell What's the URL for the beta website?
15:35:51 <warlord> Hmm....
15:36:28 <jralls> Uh-oh.
15:39:24 <warlord> I am trying to find the code that pushes that.
15:39:50 <warlord> Ah, try www.gnucash.org/beta ?
15:40:08 <warlord> Nope, that's not it.
15:40:14 <warlord> it's possible that there is none?
15:40:19 <warlord> Or we need to ask linas
15:42:06 <jralls> Maybe it's in the gitorious scripts.
15:47:06 <warlord> I looked; all it does is contact www.gnucash.org to pull the update.
15:47:07 <jralls> warlord, gitolite's post-receive hook calls $HOME/bin/update-website-beta but that script isn't in the gitolite repo nor the gnucash-htdocs one.
15:47:31 <warlord> right; because it's a port-knocker on Linas; having that visible would be a "security threat"
15:49:22 <jralls> So it would, but it's not. Only you can see the script. But the port-knocker is better because linas can reconfigure his server without having to worry about externals.
15:50:11 <warlord> he and I just need to agree on the "knock" ;)
15:50:57 <jralls> Found it in the wiki. You were close, it's https://www.gnucash.org/beta/. The trailing slash apparently matters.
15:52:06 <warlord> Ah, so it doesn.

18:09:16 <cira> hello. I've been playing with the Trading accounts in 3.906
18:13:33 <cira> I create a trading account with a custom currency, then create a transaction depositing an amount in the new currency.
18:15:16 <cira> GnuCash adds balancing entries from the Trading hierarchy, and I add a credit to finish balancing the transaction.
18:16:18 <cira> I look at the transaction and it seems balanced, but every split has the little square with the x in it.

18:17:40 <cira> After exploring the issue, I see it's not a new behavior. At least back to 3.5 has the same behavior.
18:18:16 <jralls> cira, when you're in split view it's up to you to get the transaction to balance in the currency of the account in which you created the transaction. That may mean adjusting the exchange rate on multiple splits.
18:18:43 <cira> So I guess it's not a 4.0 release stopper.
18:18:59 <jralls> Be especially careful with exchange rates vs. amounts and values. If you use an exchange rate you may get rounding in values that lead to an imbalance.
18:20:20 <cira> I'll try taking out the commodity rounding.
18:21:26 <jralls> The best practice is to enter the amount rather than the price in the transfer dialog. That allows GnuCash to calculate the price/exchange rate exactly.
18:22:23 <cira> I set the price using the Price Database.
18:22:39 <jralls> One more thing: If you must enter price, enter it as a fraction (e.g. 13/31) instead of a decimal.
18:22:57 <cira> oh, didn't try that yet.
18:23:03 <jralls> You mean via quote retrieval?
18:23:46 <cira> no, I'm experimenting using GnuCash to keep inventory/orders.
18:24:23 <jralls> There's an issue with decimal numbers on computers: Because computers work in base 2 there are many fractions that cannot be represented exactly with decimals.
18:27:45 <jralls> GnuCash isn't designed for inventory management.
18:34:29 *** kael has quit IRC
18:45:17 <cira> true, but I'm attempting to treat it the same as trading for a currency.
18:45:57 <cira> perhaps an image will reveal what I'm doing wrong. https://pasteboard.co/JeMIAUm.png
18:49:00 <cira> humm. If I turn off 'trading accounts' in File->Properties, the out-of-balance indicator goes away.
18:49:45 <jralls> Just about everything. You need to spend some time with an accountant.
18:52:33 *** Aussie_matt has joined #gnucash
18:56:16 <jralls> From the using GnuCash perspective you should use Tools>Security Editor to create commodities for the tiles and use account type STOCK for the accounts denominated in tiles. Those will be Asset accounts: Another thing GnuCash doesn't handle well is barter.
18:56:45 <jralls> So no tile-denominated Income, Expense, Liability, or Equity.
19:02:46 <jralls> In the transaction at hand, right click on each of the splits denominated in tiles and pick Edit exchange rate from the context menu. Make sure that the amount field is exactly $160.00 in each. If it isn't select the radio button to the left and enter that, then click OK.
19:03:47 <jralls> Removing Trading Accounts changes the balancing process and makes it more forgiving.
19:21:39 <cira> ok. 'tile' = 'custom security' (as apposed to a national currency) Using a stock account does not auto-fill the current price from the price-database, instead it over writes it, so values must be entered everytime, and correctly. (error prone) Using a trading account, GnuCash correctly auto-fills the current price.
