08:54:36 <warlord> chris, let me check.
08:55:15 <GM_Books> warlord: Thanks for the feedback! Any suggestions what to try if it can't connect to the database?
08:56:23 <warlord> chris, mysql log was complaining about needing to run mysql_upgrade, so I did. Not sure if that was "it" or not.
08:56:42 <warlord> GM_Books, try using the standard mysql client, first, from your gnucash host?
08:57:00 <warlord> If you want to use MySQL we assume you're a DBA and know how to use and maintain a database.

09:00:57 <GM_Books> warlord: Thanks, while I have used databases some I have not done a lot of setup. The database does seem to be accessible from Excel using the same credentials.
09:04:10 <warlord> GM_Books, Not sure how Excel talks to MySQL
09:04:21 <warlord> Are you on Windows?
09:23:47 <GM_Books> warlord: I use Windows 10 primarily, although I also recently installed on Ubuntu 20.04.
09:25:45 <warlord> Where is MySQL running?
09:31:03 <GM_Books> warlord: on Windows I installed the basic mySQL products. When I tried on my Ubuntu machine, I installed DBeaver as the database management tool. I feel less certain that the database is working at all correctly on Ubuntu. (To avoid confusion, I should clarify that my goal so far has been to get GnuCash talking with the database hosted on the same machine.)
09:32:21 <warlord> Let's step back a minute -- why do you want to use a Mysql backend?

10:26:38 <GM_Books> warlord: It's a good question. Ultimately, I would have some interest in setting it up to run Justin Hunt's GnuCash mobile app for Android, although I realize that would take a whole different level of savvy. So if I would be able to query the database from mySQL, and do pivot reports directly in Excel, my thought is that might also be quite worthwhile potentially.

10:40:16 <warlord> GM_Books, fair enough. I've never run Mysql on Windows, so I can't help you there. I can certainly help you from the Ubuntu side (although I'm a RedHat/fedora guy myself).
10:40:21 *** Mechtilde has quit IRC
10:40:31 <warlord> I've never tried DBeaver. But I can walk you through the MySQL command-line tools.
10:40:38 <warlord> (at least on Ubuntu)
10:40:59 <warlord> On Windows I don't know if there is a firewall issue or something else going on.

10:55:35 <GM_Books> warlord, thanks for those ideas. Would you favor Fedora for running mySQL? I'm not opposed to giving it a try, although my preference would certainly be to stay in Windows if possible. In Windows I did temporarily try disabling the firewall, but it did not seem to change anything. I would appreciate some guidance, but work constraints are a bit of a problem currently. I'd like to try to check back when I have a little more time
10:55:35 <GM_Books> to dedicate to this, if that's okay.
10:55:47 <chris> is https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797739 a safe change to the Transaction Report? (I think so: changes the default options)

11:04:23 <warlord> Like I said, we assume you're a DBA so we don't support the mysql side of the setup, only the gnucash side. We assume you can reach the mysql database and set it up properly before gnucash connects.

11:30:15 <jralls> chris, warlord, the changes in BZ were mine. I collapsed the individual 2.6.... version bugs into a single 2.6.x to shorten the version list.
11:33:18 <jralls> chris, 777739 seems reasonable and minor enough not to be a new feature.
11:52:08 <fell> While pushing, I got "warning: refname 'master' is ambiguous."
11:54:58 <jralls> fell, I see that too from time to time. I haven't been able to find the ambiguity.

12:20:50 <gjanssens> GM_Books: your reference to Justin Hunt's GnuCash mobile app for android caught my attention
12:21:11 <gjanssens> I had never heard of that one before so I searched for it in the google play store.
12:21:23 <gjanssens> I don't know what to think of it.
12:21:47 <gjanssens> There's almost no information on that page and the link to the app's website is dead.
12:23:10 <gjanssens> There's a free and a paid version.
12:25:16 <gjanssens> And just for the sake of clarity, Justin Hunt is a not gnucash developer and he never that I can find communicated with any of the gnucash devs about his plans for a gnucash mobile app.
12:25:58 <gjanssens> I guess he doesn't have to, but it all makes me a bit uneasy.
12:27:13 <ArtGravity> Google Play identifying the developer as GnuCash seems questionable.
12:29:15 <ArtGravity> I used a previous version with satisfaction some years back.
12:33:38 <jralls> ArtGravity, I think you're looking at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.gnucash.android&hl=en. Justin Hunt's is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.huntservicesllc.mobilegnucash&hl=en.
12:33:51 <ArtGravity> Yes
12:34:15 <ArtGravity> Haven't used it in quite some time, but it was a very good app during the time I used it.
12:36:02 <ArtGravity> I found the Mobile GnuCash by Justin Hunt that you are talking about.
12:36:07 <jralls> I think the GnuCash one is Ngewi Fett's. That one started as a Google Summer of Code project with GnuCash. Ngewi seems to have lost interest in maintaining it. It's a bit disappointing though that he's pointing users back to us.

14:39:20 <GM_Books> warlord, I think ill try to look into getting Fedora and setting up a database that way. Would you have any suggestions for a management program or do you tend to rely on command line?
14:41:52 <Mechtilde> GM_Books, I prefer adminer
14:42:08 <warlord> I just use the cmd line.
14:43:47 <jralls> GM_Books, there's generally no operational difference between Ubuntu and Fedora except the package managers.
14:46:32 <GM_Books> Okay, thanks for the tips, Mechtilde, jralls, and warlord. Warlord, I'll probably need to be in touch.
14:46:50 <warlord> I'm here. :)
14:47:22 <GM_Books> warlord: :)
14:47:33 <Mechtilde> I use GnuCash with MySQl as the backend
14:48:20 <jralls> warlord, I encountered a reference to a QSF backend in qofsession.h Do you remember anything about it?
14:52:39 <warlord> jralls, yeah, it was supposed to be a generic way to serialize QOF objects
14:53:03 <warlord> IIRC the goal was a https/xml/soap-based backend (client/server)
14:56:06 * jralls had to go to wikipedia to remember what soap was.
