10:17:30 <chris> warlord jralls ongoing pricing saga: there is "gnc:case-exchange-fn" and "gnc:case-exchange-time-fn" -- you wouldn't know exactly why there are 2 functions? they were different from the start and have diverged into different ways
10:18:36 <chris> https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/commit/0338dff9b6d#diff-addcd1e84673c2749421a1bff1d108a4R651 is the first introduction to case-exchange-time-fn
10:19:31 <chris> istm case-exchange-fn is generally used for 'single-date' reports eg balsheet whereas case-exchange-time-fn seems for 'multidate' charts but I suspect only because of copypasta code
10:19:53 <warlord> I honestly don't know, sorry.
10:20:26 *** katom has joined #gnucash
10:20:48 <chris> thought so... :(
10:21:00 *** katom has quit IRC
10:22:33 <chris> it could be as simple as the -time- variant also updates the progressbar but unfortunately they've diverged into separate paths :-o
10:24:33 <warlord> Well, look at the two functions and see what they do differently?
10:27:11 <chris> the -time- variant adds support for progress bar, otherwise they have changed into fairly different beasts especially average-cost and weighted-average so that I don't know why they haven't been modified together
10:28:55 <warlord> WEIRD...
10:29:12 <warlord> I suspect the initial difference was just progress bar, for longer operations.
10:29:27 <warlord> But really, they should be "combined'
10:29:32 <chris> the -time- variant also accepts a commoditylist for some reason only used by weighted-average
10:30:19 <chris> cstim's commit message states the time variant offers "time-varying exchange rates.", but case-exchange-fn also accepts end-date
10:30:31 <chris> so much hack
10:31:20 <warlord> I am sure.. t
10:31:26 <warlord> There is lots of technical debt throughout the code.
10:31:32 <warlord> especially in the reports, but just throughout.
10:31:45 <warlord> Just look at the Recurrence duplication between SX and Budgets..
10:32:10 <warlord> (which MAY have finally gotten merged back together -- but they were separate systems, completely duplicated code, for a while)

11:31:39 <jeffpc> I version control my (uncompressed) .gnucash file and open it on two different systems - this worked very well. This weekend, one of them just upgraded on me from 2.6 to 3.4. 3.4 however made a lot of "useless" changes to the .gnucash file (summary: https://termbin.com/hn72), are 2.6 and 3.4 compatible?
11:32:04 <jeffpc> that is, is it wise to move a .gnucash file between 2.6 and 3.4 repeatedly?
11:38:28 *** jervin has quit IRC
11:51:49 <warlord> jeffpc, depends which version of 2.6. and whether you use any of the new-in-3.4 features.
12:03:36 <jeffpc> 2.6.15 (it's debian stable)
12:03:54 <warlord> Oh. Hmm. Probably too old to be compatible with 3.x
12:03:58 <warlord> Uprade to 2.6.21
12:04:02 <warlord> Try using GetDeb
12:04:13 *** chris has quit IRC
12:05:10 <jeffpc> I guess new debian stable should come out in a few months (with 3.4)
12:05:18 <warlord> maybe
12:05:35 <warlord> Or just use GetDeb and upgrade. 2.6.15 is multiple years old.
12:06:51 <jeffpc> right
12:07:41 <jeffpc> getdeb looks like an ubuntu thing
12:09:18 <jeffpc> and getdeb.net seems to be ... weird
12:09:56 <jeffpc> just crappy content about random crap
12:09:59 <jeffpc> anyway
12:11:42 <jeffpc> yeah, the getdeb links in gnucash wiki are all dead

14:22:37 <ecdhe> I used GNU cash to track some accounts last year. I wanted to check the accounts for totals but realized I hadn't entered the last couple of transactions. However, when I open the accounts, I don't see any transactions listed.
14:22:48 <ecdhe> I *think* gnucash is hiding transaction that occurred before the current calendar year.
14:22:55 <ecdhe> My accounts list still shows the totals just as I left them, but I can't see the individual transactions that got it that way.
14:22:57 *** fell_laptop has quit IRC
14:23:01 <ecdhe> Aside from rolling my system clock, is there a sensible way to get GNUCash to show me my transactions from last year so I can see which couple of transactions are missing, and enter them?

20:46:14 <jralls> cal-tec: That's been discussed at great length in the gnucash-user mailing list. Short summary, HMRC require an API key that must be kept secret so there's no way for open-source programs to play. There's at least one website that can ingest a properly-formatted CSV and some users plan to use that.

21:14:32 <cal-tec> jralls, to be honest that sounds typical of HMRC. I will take a look at the mailing list. I suppose what is needed is some sort of middleware application that is closed source but with an openAPI that gnuCash can interface to but if there is a website offering the service that is the same idea

21:19:33 <jralls> cal-tec: I don't think that anyone's going to be motivated to write that middleware and they'd have trouble connecting to GnuCash and staying legal under the GPL. A website that takes CSVs has a broader market and no licensing issues, so I expect that will be the best you can hope for.
21:22:01 <cal-tec> jralls, Hmm hadn't considered the GPL... Cheers for your advice
