10:11:48 <gus> hey guys... I'm new to gnucash; just going through the tutorial and finding my way around. I was trying multi-currency, since I'll have to use at least two currencies for sure, and found something that looks like a bug. But I wanted to check with you first, in case I'm doing something really stupid. Scenario: GnuCash 3.4. I created a few bank accounts for USD, Euros and Hong Kong Dollars, as shown in the tutorial, with their
10:11:50 <gus> corresponding equity accounts. If I go to the price database and Get Quotes, I *apparently* get only one for Euros, but it turns out that HKD was fetched as well. It's just not showing.
10:13:02 <gus> how do I know it was fetched as well? Because I enabled the "Total (USD)" column in the accounts tab, and now HKD is converting.
10:13:16 *** fell has quit IRC
10:14:59 <gus> closing and re-opening the price database dialog makes no difference. If I delete the quote for EUR, the accounts chart reacts correctly, showing zero under "Total (USD)", but now, with an empty price database, HKD still converts.
10:15:07 *** lmat has quit IRC
10:22:17 <warlord> gus, That is.. odd.
10:22:43 *** fell has joined #gnucash

10:23:10 *** Robert847 has left #gnucash
10:29:02 <gus> yeah, I thought so
10:29:18 *** nimish has quit IRC
10:29:20 <gus> in particular because it leaves me with no control of the price for that currency
10:30:25 <gus> there are another couple of weird things I noticed in the price database:
10:31:34 <gus> 1. I added a fourth account in a different currency, and it never showed either in the price database, but in this case sometimes I got duplicate rows (i.e., same security, currency and date, which I assume is the primary key).
10:33:29 <gus> 2. For EUR the quote works as I would expect... I get a row for security EUR, currency USD. But when (sometimes) HKD showed up, it did in reverse, as security USD, currency HKD. I would have expected the opposite, although I'm not sure how gnucash resolves this. (Maybe this is how it's supposed to work if the reverse price was unavailable or something like that.)
10:35:46 <gus> right now I have: four bank accounts in 4 different currencies, one of them USD. All of them have non-zero balances, and all of them are converting (i.e., non-zero "Total (USD)" column). However, I have a single row showing in the price database under the EUR security. There's a security group for USD, but it's showing empty; no actual quotes in it.
10:35:55 *** guak has joined #gnucash
10:38:47 <chris> gus: your Total (HKD) appears because the pricing can be derived from your existing transactions, irrespective of the price database
10:39:50 <gus> the only transaction in HKD is the opening balance against the equity account
10:40:03 <gus> not sure how that can be used to derive the conversion rate
10:40:09 <gus> am I missing something?
10:40:41 <gus> (in fact, all four accounts have exactly one transaction each: the opening balance for 10K in their respective currencies)
10:41:18 <gus> ah, wait... just noticed that you said "Total (HKD)"
10:41:50 <gus> yeah, those totals will always show up; they are just sums across all transactions
10:42:22 <gus> but what I was saying above is that I turned on the "Total (USD)" column, that shows totals for accounts in USD, regardless of their own currency
10:42:28 <gus> for that you need to convert
10:42:39 <gus> (except for the USD account)
10:47:56 <chris> so you have 4 asset accounts in 4 currencies, and 4 equity accounts in 4 currencies?
10:49:11 <chris> your 10K HKD opening balance is converted from USD equity, hence there's a conversion here
10:49:32 *** ArtGravity has joined #gnucash
10:49:46 <gus> 4 asset accounts in 4 currencies and 4 equity accounts in the same respective currencies, yes
10:50:10 <chris> then this is odd
10:50:24 <gus> one of the pairs is an asset account in HKD, with an opening balance against an equity in HKD
10:50:30 <gus> it's the only transaction in HKD
10:50:41 <gus> so a conversion rate is needed
10:50:51 <gus> okay... just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something stupid
10:50:59 <gus> I guess I'll compile this and file a bug report
10:51:08 <gus> thank you guys!
10:51:11 <gus> appreciated
10:53:24 <chris> fwiw my price-database isn't showing missing conversions, and get-quotes does enable conversions, and delete-quote does undo conversions, all as expected
10:53:38 <chris> so, you'll need to include as much detail about your setup as possible
10:53:50 <chris> os, build, locale, and xml sample datafile
10:54:53 <gus> sure thing
10:54:56 <gus> I'll do
10:56:26 <chris> USD group being empty is odd too, shouldn't happen

11:59:46 <joatmon> Hi everyone - after searching for a while I couldn't find an answer to this question so I figured I'd ask the gurus here: my credit union download files have the deposit/withdrawal amounts together in one column, all unsigned, and then has a separate column with CR/DR to indicate a credit/debit. Is there a way to handle this in the importer, or do I need to fix it in the CSV?
