00:10:45 <BrianA_MN> I think I've solved my issue. I'm just wondering how many USA users might run into the same issue of the 12/31 bug when running their Tax Output form. I'm thinking maybe a last minute update on the mailing list might be helpful to some?
00:26:36 <BrianA_MN> Should one always rebuild and install GNUCash to refresh the build and get the latest fixes, even if the version is the same? Or is there another way to get the latest updates?
00:36:36 <BrianA_MN> Sorry have to leave for some sleep. I'll leave my connection to see if anyone responds to question of updating!

08:52:19 <chris> warlord wish to canvas your opinion re: html-acct-table -- the mechanism by which accounts are displayed in a vertical list, indented by level. there's lots of reports using it, and it has the *flexibility* of choosing 9 combinations for subtotals handling strategies:
08:53:17 <chris> parent-account-balance = immediate/recursive/omit, parent-account-subtotal = true/false/canonically-tabbed. IMVHO the canonically tabbed option is *broken* and must be eliminated. From the remaining 6, 2 are redundant (recursive+true), 2 are wrong (omit/false) etc. From my experimentation the only sane options are either recursive (parent account counts subaccounts), separately-shown (children totals shown separately), or hidden.
08:53:42 <chris> my query is what would be best in handling old broken combinations... ignore?
08:54:59 <warlord> There are a few options here.
08:55:16 <warlord> First, you could remove the options. If that happens, someone will pipe up if they are using them
08:55:37 <warlord> 2) you could just keep the broken behavior.. This wont ruffle feathers but might be more work for you
08:55:48 <warlord> 3) You could fix the behavior.. This COULD have the same result as Option 1
08:57:36 <chris> Ok. This is major work and don't know if I am capable of doing it safely!
08:59:07 <warlord> There is another option -- which is to remove the option from the visible menu without removing the implementation...
09:01:13 <chris> ah carry baggage... just like old code
09:01:55 <warlord> Yes, but ... this is a way to deprecate the features without making it TOO hard to re-enable them if there is a wild cryout.
09:02:07 <warlord> And if there is no cryout, then the code can be safely removed.
09:02:40 <chris> Ok thx will keep in mind

09:17:52 <BrianA_MN> What is the normal way for a person to update GNUCash for the latest fixes? Last night I had to fix bug 796498 by downloading and replacing the taxtft.scm
09:19:50 <BrianA_MN> But it was only by checking the output of tax report against Transaction Reports for individual accounts that I became aware of the issue. AND the issue was only present under 1120S and not Sole Proprietor.
09:21:25 <warlord> BrianA_MN, it depends on where the fixes are, and how quickly you need them.
09:21:32 <warlord> For a scheme fix, what you did is just fine.
09:21:42 <warlord> Another option is to rebuild it yourself.
09:21:48 <warlord> Or just wait for an updated release.
09:22:56 <BrianA_MN> Is there a way to notify other US Tax payors or preparers that the taxtft.scm needs to be updated, like by the mailing list or a notice on the Web page?
09:24:07 <chris> gnucash-user@gnucash.org
09:24:53 <BrianA_MN> I was also surprised that it affected the 1120S business andnot the sole proprietor, because the bug supposedly affected the beginning balance of all.
09:25:03 <BrianA_MN> @chris thanks I'll send an email.
09:25:03 <gncbot> BrianA_MN: Error: "chris" is not a valid command.
09:26:01 <BrianA_MN> chis - thanks I'll send an email to the list, because in reviewing the archive I did NOT see this mentioned.

09:28:44 <warlord> I wonder if we should push 3.5 sooner to get this change out?
09:28:49 <warlord> but jralls isn't here
09:29:52 <BrianA_MN> I last built on Jan 13,2019, so I should be able to review the git and see if there are any critical fixes, correct?
09:31:41 <chris> Brian: or you could rebase on current maint and grab all fixes so far
09:34:04 <BrianA_MN> Hmm - I could if I knew how to build from git. I build from a slackware package, which uses http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnucash/gnucash-3.4.tar.bz2 as the source.
09:34:41 <BrianA_MN> I assume that is the official release and not the maint stream
09:35:09 <chris> fell has kindly maintained https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building
09:35:35 <BrianA_MN> Isn't gnucash now using meson and ninja for building from source code?
09:35:49 <BrianA_MN> Oh didn' see that I'll read.
09:36:03 <warlord> it is the official release which is a tag on the maint branch.
09:37:15 <chris> warlord - I've found that it is more than sufficient to eliminate set! from guile code, and suddenly code becomes readable... (see recent changes to budget.scm)
09:37:19 <chris> :-)
09:39:16 <BrianA_MN> Where is the maint branch kept. I would be faster for me to simply rebuild with the slackware package slackbuild if I had the correct source downloaded
09:40:26 <chris> https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Git#Using_the_Github_Repository
09:42:37 <warlord> chris, LOL
09:42:57 <warlord> chris, set! has it place, of course.. But it's a tool, and should be used only when it is the RIGHT tool.
09:43:43 <chris> this should be taught somewhere... don't use set! use let
09:43:51 <warlord> *nods*
09:44:08 <warlord> set! also has the problem that it can reach outside the current environment.
09:44:22 <warlord> whereas let will create a new environment.
09:44:46 <chris> which is exactly why set! is confusing
09:45:01 <chris> now budget.scm is set!-free

10:02:58 <BrianA_MN> Do I understand that maint are rolled up to unstable and then unstable is made into a tarball for download? If so there hasn't been a new unstable since last spring
10:03:35 <BrianA_MN> Cause I'm having trouble understanding all the steps to do this from git...=-O
10:04:08 <warlord> BrianA_MN, no, tarball is made from maint
10:04:15 <warlord> git checkout maint
10:04:38 <BrianA_MN> yup, i got that and figure i have to also git master then merge
10:05:06 <BrianA_MN> but the wikii suggested git merge is for maint to unstable not master
10:06:03 <warlord> no, you dont
10:06:14 <warlord> There has been nothing going to master..
10:06:24 <warlord> maint gets merged into master periodically.
10:06:35 <warlord> All current (bugfix) development is on maint
10:06:42 <warlord> master is for next-gen features.
10:07:02 <BrianA_MN> so if i want to rebuild with the latest bugfixes, all i need is maint and not master
10:07:09 <warlord> correct
10:07:13 <BrianA_MN> oh ok
10:35:21 <BrianA_MN> so if I mkdir, git clone maint, move into that directory, then make and make install I'll have all the latest patches?
10:40:53 <warlord> BrianA_MN, well, there is more than that.. you need to cmake first ;)
10:43:33 <BrianA_MN> ok O
10:43:35 <BrianA_MN> O
10:44:09 <BrianA_MN> I'm not familiar with making a working application from git, that is why I was asking to make sure i had the right steps

10:49:07 <BrianA_MN> wait I just got it. I opened my last build directory for gnucash and see all the directories and files, so the git clone is the build directory and then I should be able to simply run the slackware SlackBuiild script against that directory and be good to go. So thanks

11:05:56 <warlord> BrianA_MN, no; jralls usually compiles the list when he builds the release.
