07:47:02 <chris> gjanssens: you probably already know this trick, but my maint-scheme-progress will need refreshing
07:47:02 <chris> so you may wish to save a local copy of my branch, and when I'm finished you could then git-diff for a quick review
07:47:28 <chris> will probably complete by tomorrow
08:13:06 *** rdffe32 has joined #gnucash
08:13:50 <rdffe32> Hello, I just installed gnucash on windows and a error window keeps coming back saying A: (the diskette drive) is not ready. Help?
08:28:18 *** chris has quit IRC
08:31:41 <warlord> rdffe32, can you click it away, or does it not let you continue past that?
08:40:52 <rdffe32> warlord: I can click on any of the 3 usual cancel retry continue, but it comes back after 3 seconds or so
08:42:08 <rdffe32> It seems to only happen after I open the preferences window
08:43:02 *** chris has joined #gnucash
08:43:32 <warlord> Hmm.. Did you have something on A: at some point when using gnucash?
08:43:38 <rdffe32> On a possibly related note, gnucash always crashes when saving
08:45:05 <rdffe32> warlord: no. I'm not even sure if the reader works
08:45:36 <warlord> Crashes how?
08:47:41 <rdffe32> 1) do anything, for example, create an account 2) press guardar/save 3) The usual windows program crash window: "Gnucash program file dejo de funcionar" (stopped working)
08:49:51 <warlord> stopped working? Or stopped responding?
08:50:04 <warlord> Sometimes a save can take a long time.
08:51:44 <rdffe32> Well, it's for a new file, so it can't be that big. And it's definetively stopped working, I don't even have a choice to wait for it to come back
09:02:13 *** fabior has joined #gnucash
09:02:25 <warlord> So the main window disappears?
09:02:46 <warlord> What version of gnucash are you using? What version of windows?
09:04:28 <rdffe32> no, the main windows stays there until I choose if I want to report the problem to microsoft. Windows 7, gnucash ID de CompilaciĆ³n: 3.4+ (2018-12-30)
09:06:09 <warlord> Hmm. What file storage mechanism did you choose? And to where are you saving it?
09:06:59 <rdffe32> xml, document folder
09:07:18 <rdffe32> worth it to try the others? I thought xml was the reliable one
09:11:11 <rdffe32> sqlite3 apparently just crashes when saving for the first time (xml you can create the file, just modifying anything and saving crashes)
09:12:12 <chris> rdffe32 you're the only person reporting crashing on windows 3.4... there must be something unusual about the windows permissions or the build... did you download the .exe from website?
09:12:48 <chris> 3.4 crashing on windows 7 ... (gnucash won't run on windows 3.x)
09:13:01 <rdffe32> haha
09:14:58 <rdffe32> chris: yes, straight from the gnucash website, as for permissions,I can save the unchanged empty file in both desktop and documents folder. It apparently only crashes when I change things, like creating a client or an account
09:16:01 <chris> usually, modifying the book will create .log files - are these happening?
09:16:06 <warlord> So initial save is okay, but updates fail?
09:16:35 <warlord> Is there anything in the Trace File? https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Trace_File
09:16:54 <warlord> Er, sorry, https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/TraceFile
09:17:28 <rdffe32> actually it's https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile
09:17:34 <warlord> Okay, clearly I need to test this first.. Its https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile
09:17:51 <rdffe32> and where are the .log? I don't see any in the .gnucash folder
09:18:12 <warlord> The log files should be in the same dir as your data file
09:18:20 <warlord> and backup files
09:19:36 <rdffe32> nope, but there are a lot of trace files
09:19:43 <rdffe32> all of them starting with * 11:16:39 WARN <gnc.app-utils> Could not spawn perl: Failed to execute child process (No such file or directory)
09:19:52 <rdffe32> and a few ofthem with other things
09:20:48 <rdffe32> I haveto install perl? on windows?
09:20:54 *** fabior has quit IRC
09:21:41 <warlord> No, that's only for Quote retrieval.
09:22:01 <warlord> (if you want to get quotes, there is an installer script you can run)
09:25:08 <rdffe32> oh, now i realize notepad is probably ignoring the linux style new lines and there are a bunch of locale related errors
09:28:04 <rdffe32> https://pastebin.com/raw/65uue2ed
09:28:55 <warlord> Ah, you're hitting the invalid-locale bug..
09:29:07 <warlord> I think jralls fixed that; you could try a windows nightly?
09:32:30 <rdffe32> sure, you want me to install from master from https://code.gnucash.org/builds/win32/ ?
09:32:48 <warlord> no, maint
09:33:04 <warlord> (not master)
09:33:23 <rdffe32> dling https://code.gnucash.org/builds/win32/maint/gnucash-3.4-2019-02-14-git-3.4-80-gf22e30ba9+.setup.exe
09:34:32 <warlord> ok.
09:52:22 <rdffe32> the diskette thing continues, but apparently I can save now. Is the problem because I used environment.local to set language to spanish? And how good is the translation? I assume it doesn't show up as a installation option because it's still unfinished?
09:53:21 <rdffe32> And when updating, I should wait for 3.5?
09:53:24 <rdffe32> thanks
09:57:06 *** storyjesse has joined #gnucash
10:04:18 <warlord> The crash was due to the language, yes. The trace-file definitely showed that.
10:04:29 <warlord> You can use the nightly for now until 3.5 shows up.
10:04:49 <warlord> As for the diskette issue -- I don't know how to solve that. Clearly something is looking for something at A:\
10:08:40 <rdffe32> nothing about that on the tracefile

13:01:20 <rdffe32> Is there a way to group some invoices and bills together in a 'project' or something like that? I think similarly to the customer jobs feature, but not limited to a single client

13:24:46 <warlord> No, not really.
13:29:36 <rdffe32> I just looked a bit more and it's been a feature request for 16 years! https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113772 Is it that hard to do? Would have been useful :(
13:30:25 <warlord> Unclear if it's "hard" or just that nobody with the right skills has felt strongly-enough about it to implement it.
13:35:57 *** kael has quit IRC
13:36:00 *** kael has joined #gnucash
13:37:33 <rdffe32> It's the most popular feature request https://gnucash.uservoice.com/forums/101223-feature-request . No dev felt strongly enough to implement the most popular simple feature? I think it's complicated for a reason I can't see
13:39:15 <warlord> It's certainly not a simple, straightforward feature like, say, the Close Books feature.
13:40:15 <warlord> Yes, "tags" is definitely one of the most-requested features. but it requires changes to data formats, input dialogs, a management system (if you want to define available tags, etc), and then *all* the reports would need to be updated to search-on/limit-by the tags.
13:45:28 *** jerryq has quit IRC
13:47:59 <rdffe32> Heh, maybe I'm understimating the difficulty here. You know if anyone already started/tried implementing it? I just found a dead link from 2010 and lots of users discussing their wishes, but little about actually developing it. maybe it's worth a try
