07:41:07 <Schrostfutz> Hi, I set up gnucash with a simple checking account which I linked to an FinTS online banking account. It still shows as empty however, I expected it would import the account balance and past entries from online-banking. Is that the case? If so, how can I trigger it?

10:52:57 <lmat> jralls: Hmm... It's an expense to me and a reimbursable :-) I have a special bank account that can only be used for medical expenses. When I incur a medical expense, I'm entitled to be able to get some money from that special account at a later date. Did you already understand all this?

11:16:37 <chris> lmat: I'd move money from Expenses:Medical to A/R:MedicalReimbursables when I get the rebate
11:21:39 <chris> after all the net effect is that you're spending less dollars out of pocket on medical expenses, no?

11:52:19 <jralls> lmat: Of course. We had those accounts when I was still working.
11:56:51 <jralls> lmat: Say you get some amount of money contributed to your HSA every paycheck. Debit that to Assets:HSA. When you incur a reimbursable expense you book that as DR Expenses:Reimbursable Medical and CR however you pay it. If that's a credit card you'll eventually DR the CC Liability account and CR an Asset account. You file a claim with the HSA administrator and eventually get reimbursed, so at that point you CR the HSA account and DR whatever asset
11:56:51 <jralls> you deposit it into.
12:02:24 *** Schrostfutz has joined #gnucash
12:03:04 <jralls> lmat: The problem with that method is that it doesn't show you the amount of unpaid claims. I need to think about that for a bit. You might ask on gnucash-user: Adrien Monteleone in particular might have some useful ideas about how to model that.

14:57:28 <jralls> lmat: Whether it's really an expense depends on the nature of your HSA. If it's the kind where you divert pre-tax dollars then bills that you pay out of it are expenses. If it's the kind that your employer funds directly then those costs are a pass-through and not an expense to you. In that case you would DR an Asset suspense account when you CR your credit card and when you get the reimbursement check CR the suspense account and DR whatever accou
14:57:28 <jralls> nt you deposit the check into.

15:17:57 <lmat> jralls: I see, good points. The money is mine, and my employer contributes most of it, but I contribute a little bit, too. The reason I say it's mine is because if I leave my job, the account follows me. It has no concept of "roll over" because the money just stays mine all the time. Once I reach a certain age, I am able to use the money as I like (without the stipulation that it must be used on medical
15:18:03 <lmat> expenses). None of that money is taxed, too.

15:36:29 <jralls> lmat: How about this: When you book the expense, DR Assets:HSA and CR Assets:HSA:Reimbursement_requested and when you get the reimbursement check DR Assets:HSA:Reimbursement Requested and CR Assets:Checking.

16:18:13 <Wilsona> before..... this message, you can read other very similar but the programs appears run ok....
16:18:13 <jralls> Wilsona: What OS?
16:19:04 <Wilsona> 8.1 and 2008 server
16:19:26 <jralls> Windows, then. What are your language and region settings?
16:19:48 <jralls> Actually, you said yesterday that the language is Spanish. What's the region?
16:20:21 <Wilsona> LANG=es_ES
16:20:21 <Wilsona> LANGUAGE={LANG}
16:20:21 <Wilsona> GNC_DBD_DIR={GNC_HOME}/lib/dbd
16:20:30 <Wilsona> This is the config......
16:20:40 <Wilsona> Spanish / Spain....

16:21:55 <Wilsona> Here you have the trace file opening and closing GNUCHASH
16:21:59 <Wilsona> 3.4 version
16:22:32 <Wilsona> If I leave (English) default config, GNUCASH run ok.
16:23:17 <jralls> What if you comment out the LANG and LANGUAGES lines in environment and let GnuCash get the localization from Windows?
16:25:32 <Wilsona> leave only the line GNC_DBD_DIR={GNC_HOME}/lib/dbd
16:25:33 <Wilsona> ??
16:25:45 <Wilsona> GnuCash run in english.
16:26:01 <Wilsona> Windows configuration is in spanish.....
16:28:03 <jralls> That's odd. Testing...
16:29:54 <Wilsona> In the first time, I was thinking perhaps will be a problem of mi XML file. This came from 2.6.XX nad is in XML format..... but
16:30:12 <Wilsona> if I creater a new file, the problem when save is the same.
16:31:21 <Wilsona> Thw Windows 8.1 mahine is phisical and Windows 2008 Server is a virtual machine running in the vmware infraestructure v5.5
16:34:34 <Wilsona> the previus version, 3.3 and 3.2 had some time random crashes but now with the 3.4 and Spanish language always crash when you try to save the file.
16:34:44 <Wilsona> https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QZ4aSiygmEtedV33rvlYRnpdn6a7TNOX/view?usp=sharing
16:35:16 <Wilsona> ^^^ here you have the trace file only opening and saving application.

16:35:31 <Wilsona> Thanks!!! ;-)
16:44:13 <jralls> Hmm, really weird. GnuCash picks up German from Windows but not Spanish, at least not Spanish/Spain.
16:45:40 <Wilsona> Well, for me this is since 2.6.4 if i remenber well......
16:46:11 <Wilsona> Always, I needed force the language in the enviroment file.
16:47:41 <jralls> I take it GnuCash 3.3 worked OK. Do you have any trace files from last month? If so, do they show the _S_create_c_locale_name error?
16:48:49 *** djmax has quit IRC

16:51:14 <jralls> Right.
16:53:34 <Wilsona> Yes I have several files from v3.3 but not this error appears.
16:54:09 <Wilsona> we have other, but no _S_create_c_locale_name
16:54:34 <Wilsona> if you want i can zip and share with drive.....
17:03:11 <jralls> No, that's OK. It's sufficient to know that it's not there. I can reproduce the crash as well, I'm debugging it now.

17:06:04 <Wilsona> Ok... thanks... if you need something about... not dude.... I here for you... ;-)
17:06:51 *** puck has joined #gnucash
17:15:09 <jralls> The crash is caused by the locale problem, which causes gnc_date_timestamp to return a null pointer. Passing that to std::string::operator+ crashes.
17:17:12 <Wilsona> Well, any idea for a solution?? chage region or so...?
17:17:26 <Wilsona> The problem is the same in the two installations....
17:17:48 <Wilsona> Window 2008 server and Windows 8.1
17:19:40 <jralls> You mean a work-around, I think. As I say, I can reproduce the problem; I'm using Windows 10 Pro.
17:22:05 <Wilsona> Well, the next patch perhaps?. I have not any inconvenient using English, off course is more confortable use it in spanish.... XD
17:23:52 <jralls> Yeah, well your English is *way* better than my Spanish. Anyway, the best near-term option for you would be to revert to 3.3.
17:27:30 <Wilsona> XDDDD... (arapajoe English) ;-).... anyway, I prefer use the 3.4 in english. Is more stable.... for the moment.... the 3.3 had some problems with the backspace key......
17:28:05 <Wilsona> and no random crashes for the moment........
