17:00:32 <terriblen00b> Hi! I am taking my first steps with Gnucash. I managed to add a bank account in USD and one in EUR. However, when I enter the opening balance in the account in EUR I am still asked to enter a currency conversion factor and the amount I enter (in EUR) is then converted to USD, even though still displayed in EUR in the Accounts overview....
17:00:53 <terriblen00b> any help/guidance will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance and apologies for my poor/unsuccessful googling attempts
17:02:02 <Simon> the other account you're using for the opening balance is in USD, you'll need different Equity accounts to have opening balances in other currencies
17:03:28 <terriblen00b> Ah! So under Equity e.g. "Opening balance (USD)" account for all USD bank accounts, and another "Opening balance (EUR)" for all EUR accounts! Gonna try it right away! THX!
17:10:27 <terriblen00b> Worked beautifully! Thank you very much, Simon!
17:14:32 <Simon> the same applies to any Income/Expenses that you want to track in those currencies without entering currency conversion rates
17:18:41 <terriblen00b> Noted. Thanks for the guidance!
17:20:16 <terriblen00b> Regarding conversion rates: When I update them via "Tools -> Price database -> Get Quotes", do the exchange rates get overwritten or is the overwrite "smart" i.e. carrying a timestamp so as not to mess up past transactions or overall "state"?
17:21:14 <Robert847> Hi, I am starting to run experiments with GnuCash release 2.6.17 built from rev 319375f+ on 2017-07-04 and Finance::Quote version 1.47in Ubuntu to compare things like security price downloads when run directly in a Ubuntu 16.04 VM with downloads run remotely with SSH/Xming from windows. There is a mix of securities some conffigured to be downloaded via yahoo_json and some via alphavantage. When run remotely, all the yahoo_json s
17:21:15 <Robert847> ties are updated but most or all the alphavantage securities (all U. S. based mutual funds) are not updated. I am presented with an offer to save the retrieved prices. When run directly in the VM, no prices are downloaded and I am not presented with any offer to save any prices. However, using gnc-fq-dump directly in the VM can retrieve some configured security prices via either method. Thus I am puzzled that no prices get thro
17:21:18 <Robert847> o GnuCash.
17:22:44 <Simon> terriblen00b: the price database is separate from the transactions themselves, it can be used to calculate a value for account balances in other currencies but it does not affect the transactions themselves
17:23:29 <Simon> they can both feed to each other in different directions: transactions will enter a value in the price db if there isn't one for that day, and the price db will be used to pre-populate a currency conversion rate
17:23:55 <Robert847> I am not very concerned about the missing alphavantage prices right now, as I think I can switch them to the yahoo_json method.
17:24:31 <terriblen00b> Simon: thanks! I understand there is then no risk of me messing up past transactions or overall financial situation :)) Cheers from the old continent
17:24:35 <Simon> alphavantage requires an environment variable set with your API key
17:32:14 <Robert847> Simon: I probably do not have that environment variable set for gnc-fq-dump, but this setup used to retrieve some prices through GnuCash run remotely via Alphavantage back before they got overloaded. This strange F::Q problem seems to prevent retrieving yahoo_json prices as well, but only when run directly. It also has other problems, but I am trying to solve one problem at a time.
17:35:50 <Robert847> I have not tried running gnc-fq-dump remotely yet, I can try that too
17:39:25 <Robert847> I am not thinking up more things to try comparing to figure out why retrieval fails completely when run directly but it works at least partially when run remotely.
17:44:53 <Robert847> So far I have proven that the VM does have internet access that works for both Gnucash and gnc-fq-dump to yahoo_json as well as various other programs.
17:49:58 <Robert847> when run directly, gnc-fq-dump tells me the alphavantage key is missing, but it can retrieve the price for AAPL via yahoo_json
17:56:22 <Robert847> When I run gnucash remotely via PuTTY and Xming, the PuTTY window does not return to the command prompt, so I cannot run othr programs
17:57:48 <Robert847> perhaps I need to use some parameter with gnucash to get back to the command prompt
18:00:35 <Robert847> I need to take a break for a while. back later.
