06:54:41 <Sveta> when importing transactions gnucash automatically detects some as salary, but it classifies public transport expenses as salary too
06:55:00 *** Mechtilde has quit IRC
06:55:04 <Sveta> i'm working on an import of over a year of transactions, and fixing this by hand one by one is not ideal
06:55:27 <Sveta> how do i filter the transactions by description and re-categorize multiple transactions when importing them?
06:56:01 <Sveta> or can i set gnucash to not categorize automatically at the time of import- then if filtering by description is available later then i can use that?

07:56:47 <warlord> Sveta: which importer method?
07:57:19 <warlord> QIF uses full-string text matching.
07:57:49 <warlord> OFX/HBCI/CSV uses tokenized matching, but that depends on whether you turn on Bayesian matching or not to "train" the matcher.
07:58:15 <warlord> You best bet is to import a small subset to train it, and then do it in batches. You still need to train it in the importer and validate your transactions in the importer.

08:19:31 * Farelli waves
08:21:05 <Farelli> I use split transactions to separate groceries from draws so i can track how much cash we withdraw
08:21:05 <Farelli> Now I'm trying to use a cash flow report to document the results of a month, and it doesn't seem to be adding up correctly
08:21:05 <Farelli> Is there anywhere I can look to better learn how that works, or a simpler way to break it down?

09:14:13 <warlord> Farelli: I dont understand what you mean by "to separate groceries from draws". What do you mean by a draw? How do you pay for groceries?
09:16:15 <warlord> Normally a grocery expense would be a simple transaction from Assets:Cash -> Expenses:Groceries (Or from Assets:Checking if you write a check or use a Debit card, or from Liabilities:CC if you use a credit card)
09:16:33 <warlord> I'm not sure what a "draw" is in your context, or how it fits into the grocery transaction.
09:17:18 <warlord> Do you mean a "cash back" transaction? Where your groceries are $80, you use your debit card for $100 and get $20 back from the store?
09:17:32 <Farelli> yes
09:17:56 <Farelli> wife likes to do cash withdrawals at the store so she has only one stop
09:18:28 <warlord> Okay. In that case it would be a split transaction. Credit $100 to Checking, Debit $80 to Groceries, and Debit $20 to Cash
09:19:17 <warlord> Your Cash Flow on your Bank will show the full $100. If you run a single Cash Flow and include both Bank AND Cash, then it will only show the $80 Grocery expense (and whatever additional Cash -> Expense transactions you record)
09:19:31 <warlord> Your other option is a P&L report which totals your Groceries regardless of how you pay for them.
09:35:44 <Farelli> ah, so running a cash flow with only groceries is what on confused
09:36:02 <Farelli> I need to select groceries and checking
09:36:40 <Farelli> or the p&l. that might be better, since that's really what I want. a total for groceries and a total for withdrawals

13:37:54 <warlord> Farelli: The P&L will give you a total for Groceries, regardless of how it was paid (Cash,Credit Card, etc)
13:38:51 <Farelli> Good to know. Thanks
13:38:53 <warlord> Cash Flow shows you the amount that flows between the selected accounts and non-selected accounts.
13:39:49 <warlord> So if you select ONLY your bank, it will show you the $100 Credit. If you select Bank + Cash, it will only show you the $80 to Groceries (because the $20 from Bank to Cash is "within" the circle of selected accounts)
13:40:08 <warlord> It doesn't really make sense to run a cash flow selecting Expenses:Groceries.
13:48:21 <Farelli> Just ran a p&l quickly over my phone and I already see what you mean. Exactly what I needed
13:48:26 <Farelli> Thank you
