00:25:12 <Chris> @tell warlord I'm looking at the gncTaxTableGetTables unfortunately I have been very unsuccessful in setting up an Ubuntu dev environment in spite of numerous guides, therefore I cannot compile .c/.h to test changes to swig. I'll have to submit in bugzilla for someone more clever to help.

12:48:28 *** gour has joined #gnucash
12:54:56 <gour> i'd like to 'close' some accounts, e.g. account from the banks whic hwe do not use any longer, but despite of marking account as 'hidden', i still see its entries in reports (e.g. Income Statement), so wonder how to really close them in order to not interfere with reports?
12:59:37 <fell> marusich: you could use goolgle adding "site:lists.gnucash.org" to your search expression.
12:59:57 <gour> let me add add that 'hidden' account is not listed in the Accounts' tree, but still 'spoils' report
13:01:12 <fell> gour, mark it as placeholder to write protect it and it will no longer show up in the list.
13:14:13 <gour> fell: i've selected account as placeholder and hidden as well as marked two of its subaccount as 'hidden', all of them do not appear in the list, but do in report?
13:15:27 * gour is trying to keep using GC instead of migrating to some #plaintextaccounting tool, looking for a way to get all the desired features within GC
13:15:37 <fell> Gour: and in other reports?
13:19:47 <gour> fell: well, some other reports that i try do reflect the visibility of accounts tree, so do not include the questionable account
13:23:47 <gour> same with e.g. Trial Balance
13:24:28 <fell> Then you should file a bug report against the reports, which do not respect the flags.
13:24:39 <gour> ok
13:26:11 <gour> let me post to the list as well..
13:27:35 <fell> Good idea, some reports are more quick maintained by the community.

14:12:55 <jralls> marusich: It's been that way for years. Just use your favorite search engine with "site:lists.gnucash.org" and your search terms.
14:13:58 <jralls> gour:
14:16:15 <jralls> gour: Don't bother filing a bug. If you want an account to not show in a report, use the report's options to remove it from the list of accounts. You can then save the configuration for reuse.
14:16:59 <jralls> Neither "hidden" nor "placeholder
14:17:19 <jralls> Geez, my fingers aren't hitting the right keys at all this morning.
14:19:24 <jralls> Anyway, neither "hidden" nor "placeholder" should automatically exclude splits from a report, especially not Trial Balance. Perhaps you should put more effort into getting your books in order than trying to get GnuCash to help you make them look OK when they're not.
14:20:26 <marusich> jralls, thank you for the tip. That's useful. Who owns the website with the broken link, though? Is the search feature just not available any longer?
14:21:50 <jralls> marusich: Warlord owns the website. Yes, the search engine that the list server requires is no longer maintained and was dropped from Fedora. Apparently the maintainers of the list software never noticed or don't care.
14:31:51 <marusich> Is there a good resource for learning more about double accounting, and in particular what the various of the 5 types of accounts mean and how they're used in calculations? I've been reading the manual with GnuCash, which is helpful, but I still feel like I'm missing some context.
14:32:35 <marusich> As a simple example, I don't really quite understand why an opening balance is represented by a transfer from an equity account into an asset (e.g. savings) account. The calculation doesn't make sense to me; I'd like to understand.
14:34:17 <jralls> marusich: Find a good basic accounting textbook. The "For Dummies" series is popular for that sort of thing. Most adult/continuing education programs will have a basic accounting course as well.
14:41:33 <gour> jralls: hmm...in Trial Balance/Income Statement reports, 'hidden' account is not listed, but it still does leak in the reports?
14:42:46 <gour> jralls: look, those accounts are simply obsolete denoting banks where we closed our accounts after moving to other banks. how to reflect that?
14:43:17 <gour> iow. it's not any cosmetic issue, but a pragmatic one
14:45:13 <jralls> gour: For balance reports they're always relevant even if they're not used any more because they balance splits in Equity.
14:46:06 <jralls> The only way to make them not relevant is to create a new book beginning after they were closed.
14:47:03 <gour> but not for Income Statement For Period Covering 01.01.2017 to 31.12.2017 where they represent Expenses (kn 0,00) for accounts closed few years ago
14:48:11 <gour> jralls: huh, that sucks...there is no way to simply 'close' account somehow and make it not appearing in reports? that's one of the handy features present in Beancount (plain text accounting package)
14:49:07 <jralls> Right, but the dates of the income statement should mean that they have zero value in the report. You can then exclude them from the report by checking "Omit zero balance figures" in report options>Display.
14:49:24 <marusich> jralls, thank you - I'll look into that.
14:51:18 <gour> jralls: that helps. thank you
14:52:17 <gour> jralls: do you know if any of core devs is using Budgets feature and whether there will be some improvements in the foreseeable future?

16:31:07 <Neolutionist> Hi, I'm using GnuCash with a german bank account. I find it very hard to assign transactions when importing from the bank (online). The transactions are displayed in very long lines with all the SEPA ids. Thus I have to scroll left-right on every line to see the transaction details and the (proposed) booking entry. Is there a way to switch to the multi-line view here?

17:29:35 <fell> I am currently not using it.
17:29:36 <Neolutionist> Ok, will do so. Is it a German problem? Should be the same for all of Europe.
17:30:25 <fell> But the others don't have FinTS.
17:31:50 <fell> I don't know, if the other import formats behaves in al aspects similar.
