01:08:44 <bepis> We have a problem.
01:09:19 <bepis> My family wants to use quickbooks. I need a better alternative. Gnucash is a little more advanced, right? are there other open source alternatives to quickbooks that are self-hosted?
01:09:27 <bepis> for the family business*
01:26:18 <bhardwajs> Gnucash should be usable for family business. I have been using it for my personal finances and that's much simpler than a family business.
01:38:34 <bepis> bhardwajs, it's double-entry, right? Is that intuitive for absolutely anyone to sit down and do?
01:38:41 <bepis> Or do I need to train them to use double-entry accounting?

11:56:21 <jralls> Mechtilde: I'm not sure what you mean, but I *think* that anything associated with chiptan would have to be done by AQBanking rather than GnuCash.
11:57:17 <jralls> Mechtilde: Martin's already got libchipcard that does (I think) some of that. It's bundled in the Mac GnuCash and should be available in most Linux distros.
11:57:31 <Mechtilde> we had a post at the German list that flickr code itself must be shown by GnuCash
11:58:11 <jralls> I have no idea what a "flikr" code is and unfortunately when I google it I just get references to the photo site.
11:58:17 <Mechtilde> and there would be a feature request in bugzilla but with the wrong link
11:59:24 <jralls> A BZ search for "flikr" and GnuCash finds nothing.
11:59:59 <jralls> Same for "chiptan".
12:04:17 <Mechtilde> maybe fell can help; it is the mail from 09.04.2017 16:27 at gnucash-de
12:05:11 <Mechtilde> and from 15.01.2017 at aqbanking-user
12:07:08 <Mechtilde> in German it is "Flickercode"
12:07:51 <Mechtilde> this is like a barcode and contains the inforamtion of the transaction
12:13:29 <jralls> What does one do with this barcode?
12:14:28 <jralls> I read the two email threads (thanks to Google Translate). Neither really explains what the user is trying to do and it's clear that other users are able to use libchipcard as-is.
12:17:54 <Mechtilde> I can't describe it in English, sorry

12:22:54 <jralls> You could try in German and I'll point Google Translate at it and see if it makes sense.
12:25:17 <jralls> Or you could email cstim. He's the one who really understands this stuff.
12:32:14 <Mechtilde> aqbanking liefert einen code, der auf dem Bildschirm flakkert und mit einem TAN-Generator und der Chip-Karte in eine TAN umgewandelt wird
12:37:54 *** Artefact2 has quit IRC
12:38:01 <jralls> OK. "flakkert" got translated as "flickers", which means "lights and unlights rapidly". If "displays" is better, then I understand.
12:38:44 <jralls> Is a TAN generator a separate gadget?
12:40:41 <jralls> Can AQB talk to the chipcard reader via libchipcard and generate the TAN itself? That might be a question for Martin or cstim...
12:42:01 <jralls> If GnuCash needs to generate a barcode out of the code then we'd need to know what flavor of barcode to use and find a GPL-compatible library to create it.

12:48:14 <Mechtilde> yes a TAN generator is a separate gadget
12:49:21 <Mechtilde> the java application Hibiscus can generate and display this code
12:51:01 <Mechtilde> https://sourceforge.net/projects/hibiscus/ this is GPLv2
12:57:11 <jralls> It's moved to http://www.willuhn.de/products/hibiscus/. I don't have time to look through it right now and won't anytime soon... Anyway the work would need to be done by someone with the appropriate account and equipment to test with. We can't use Hibiscus directly; the implementor would need to find the bit that generates the barcode, translate it into C++, and integrate it with AQBanking and Gtk.
12:58:02 <Mechtilde> ok thank you
12:58:10 <Mechtilde> for this information
12:58:29 <jralls> I'm afraid we'll have to say that only manual TAN entry is supported until someone comes along who can do all of that.
12:59:33 <jralls> You might want to add something to that effect to the German docs or wiki.
13:00:19 <jralls> The January email thread had a procedure for manual TAN entry in the second or third reply.
13:00:46 <jralls> It might be nice to have that in the wiki too.
