17:23:46 <Erik> Hello: We have used Quicken for 25 years but their new Canadian product is too expensive. I am looking for a replacement that will:
17:24:03 <Erik> 1) Provide robust expense tracking capability (i.e. handle user defined expense categories) c/w importation of bank and credit card transactions.
17:24:10 <Erik> 2) Provide robust investment tracking management c/w download of stock pricing information.
17:24:16 <Erik> 3) Have no practical limit of the number of concurrent accounts (banking and investing) that the tool can handle for one data file.
17:24:23 <Erik> 4) Understand multiple currencies (minimum of CAD and USD).
17:24:31 <Erik> 5) Provides local (not cloud-based) software and data storage (we operate on a Windows platform at home) - i.e. the data and my ability to access it is under my personal control 24/7. My data set is also very large and therefore not practical to process on a remote basis.
17:24:39 <Erik> Ideally the tool will import my historical Quicken records - we have 25 years of data... other Quicken-like functionality is nice-to-have but generally not show stoppers if unavailable.
17:24:57 <Erik> How well does Gnucash provide a solution for my requirements?
17:25:00 <Erik> Thanks, Erik

18:46:37 <chf> Erik, most of your requirements won't be a problem. Gnucash can import QIF, the number of accounts isn't limited, ir can use finance::quote, and multiple currencies as well.
18:47:35 <chf> Oh, and all of your data remains yours: no cloud storage at all.
18:49:41 <chf> Problems might occur when looking at the details; recently issues have been reported regarding multiple currencies as well as with investment accounts.

18:52:02 <chf> Import/export from or to other formats is also limited in functionality. The good news: you can easily test if it does what you want before switching to Gnucash, because it's open source, and you won't have to pay for it.

20:56:35 <erictheise> Erik: I’m not a sophisticated user, but I did have several decades of bookkeeping under Quicken and would not go back to it after having switched to Gnucash a few months back.
20:58:12 <erictheise> Importing the Quicken data went smoothly. I couldn’t believe it. Gnucash is more robust and I haven’t lost any entries. The support on the mailing list is very good and it seems helpful here on IRC as well.
21:00:59 <erictheise> I will say that the interface looks and feels less slick, which isn’t really an issue for me. I never got Gnucash to import directly from a bank using the supplied but external software; on the other hand, Quicken hadn’t worked reliably for more than a year and it opted to create TEMP accounts willy nilly so most of my time logged with it was for damage control.
21:05:39 <erictheise> I wish matching on QIF/QFX files worked better. Though I am a creature of habit and have used the same vendors for years, imports seem unable to suggest accurate accounts and I have to do ~90% by hand. There seems to be no typeahead for matching nested accounts, and there is no way to do bulk operations, e.g., standardizing a vendor name which appears differently for different banks and at different times or consolidating
21:05:40 <erictheise> changing an account for multiple transactions.
21:07:03 <erictheise> The project claims to adhere to strict accounting principles and I can’t really fault it for that but for a non-professional user who may have developed bad habits using Quicken it’s harder than it might be to tidy things up.
