16:00:26 <ChrisA> Hello, I need some help. I attempted to open gnucash file and I get "error parsing file." Trying to open the backup, I receive "No suitable backend found" error. Any suggestions on how I can get my file opened or restored?

16:10:12 <jralls> ChrisA: I surprised you didn't find anything, it's a fairly common problem, usually caused by trying to open the wrong file. There is another possibility if you're using an old version of GnuCash (before IIRC 2.6.4) where a bug in libgzip can cause the unzip routine to fail.

16:12:11 <ChrisA> Right, it is not the wrong file, and it opened just fine yesterday evening. GnuCash 2.6.12, Windows 7 Pro Sp1

16:18:53 <ChrisA> Yes. I did save it yesterday resulting in the current file. My backups though going through several trying to open them give me the "no suitable backend found" error.

16:42:50 <jralls> Cryptic is because it's compressed with gzip. You can uncompress it it you have WinZip or 7-Zip installed.
16:52:00 <ChrisA> Okay, I have 7-zip. Maybe it was how the file was compressed. I get "data error" when de-compressing, and on the backup I get "Unexpected end of data."

16:54:02 <jralls> Except that each of those backup files was successfully read in the past. GnuCash's XML backend never overwrites a file, it renames the old one and makes a new one.
16:54:53 <jralls> So if all of them are trashed the only things I can think of are impending hard disk failure or malware, and malware attacking gnucash files seems pretty unlikely.

17:31:25 <jralls> ChrisA: That's too bad. On the mac you have gunzip; you have to rename the file to AllenP.gnucash.gz for it to recognize it, but it would be worthwhile to see if it will uncompress it. You should also try out one of your backup-disk backups on the mac.
