00:21:29 <movedx> So, how do you guys have your household budgets and stuff defined? And what's your process or processes for keeping your ledgers/books of your households in check?
00:21:57 <movedx> I ask because I'm in the process of getting a budget and yearly goals defined, and I'm looking for sensible suggestions on structuring my accounts.

13:06:03 <jralls> fell, warlord: python strings have sprintf built in with the % operator, so "foo = '%s' % bar" is the python equivalent of "foo = g_strdup_printf("%s", bar);" in GLib except that since python is garbage collected you don't g_free(foo); later..
13:07:25 <fell> Thanks, jralls!
13:07:45 <jralls> You're welcome.

13:31:19 <gustav> Hello. I am about to migrate from MS Money, so was interested in the Migration Guide in the Appendix to the "Tutorial and Concepts Guide". It has a section "Organization of QIF Files (Discussion)" which seems relevant.
13:31:42 <gustav> Unfortunately the section is empty. Is there a discussion elsewhere?
13:33:18 <gustav> I also have a very concrete question: I want to move accounts in different currencies from MS Money to GnuCash, with many transfers between them. Will the import work for that?

14:06:02 <warlord> jralls: I figured that. Just wasn't sure if (day) would be the right replacement (but I think it is)
14:06:53 <jralls> warlord: Well, if you want the day-number (i.e. '19' for today) then day is what you want.
14:07:43 <jralls> Today's log path would be .../2017/01/19.html.

14:09:18 <jralls> If you want to get fancier, parse the date string and use https://docs.python.org/2/library/datetime.html.
14:11:38 <warlord> I want to make the minimum changes required. (Which I believe I've already done).
14:16:50 <jralls> OK.

14:41:58 <cira> movedx : I might have something to contribute in using GnuCash to implement budgets.
14:42:20 <cira> The variety of a budget I use is now popularly known as 'envelope accounting'.
14:43:53 *** fabior has quit IRC
14:45:00 <cira> I create sub accounts of the main bank account, each represents one of my catagories.
14:45:00 <cira> I also have an 'undistributed funds' catagory which holds non-earmarked cash.
14:45:00 <cira> Then each month I have a distribution transaction which shifts the budget amount to each catagory.
14:45:44 <cira> Then each purchase subtracts from the appropriate subaccount. If the subaccount represting
14:46:15 <cira> clothing is empty, I don't buy those nice slacks. Each catagory is allowed to
14:46:41 <cira> save up, allocated funds don't dissappear at the end of the month or year.
14:47:22 <cira> This works well for me in areas such as transportation, saving up for large repair
14:47:28 <cira> jobs or the purchase of a new vehicle.
14:48:26 <cira> When it comes time to reconcile, choose 'Include subaccounts' and all nessicary transactions are available.
14:49:33 <cira> The only slight gotcha I've encountered is that if you pull funds from multiple
14:50:18 <cira> catagories in one transaction, at reconcile time you need to recognize the individual
14:50:35 <cira> entries are linked and need to sum the value in your head to pick the correct
14:51:14 <cira> entry. All entries for the transaction are checked at once as a group.
14:51:47 <cira> Anyway, I hope you find this brief intro helpful.

19:18:34 <movedx> cira: Nice system. Thanks. My wife and I have a simple system at the moment: a budget for the life style costs, such as rent, utilities, taxes, car insurance, fuel, commute, health, etc; and a "goals" plan for the year, which outlines big spends like our two holidays a year, fortnightly entertaining of guests at our home, birthdays, and so on.
19:20:15 <movedx> cira: I was just going to have income accounts representing salaries and interest earned; assets accounts representing our two joint bank accounts (checking and savings), which get all the cash lumped together; a set of budget expense accounts for the above, and a set of expense goals accounts for the above; and then each week I go over our bank statements
19:20:15 <movedx> and bring them in, place spend into each category. I was planning on having a "general" set of expenses accounts too, but the little day to day things that don't fit elsewhere.
19:20:36 <movedx> I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, cira. Thanks again.
