12:24:08 <finster> hello there. some time ago i asked if it was advisable to have one gnucash book per year or if it would be better to have a continuous book
12:25:03 <finster> after a new accounting period started a few days ago, the balances of various accounts are wrong
12:25:25 <finster> i could close all accounts with the given menu item. but how do i reopen them again/
12:26:08 <finster> or would i have to manuall add closing/opening transactions for each account?
12:26:14 <warlord> finster: the "close books" just zeros out all the Income/Expense accounts by transfering the balance on the closing date into Equity
12:26:14 <finster> *manually
12:26:15 *** fabior has quit IRC
12:26:49 <warlord> There is no "reopen" per se. You can just continue working. If the "close" was done prematurely (i.e., you'r adding more transactions into the previous period) then you can delete and re-run the close books operation.
12:27:27 <finster> as i'm a paranoid it person i'm currently working on a backup file. so no data ist lost yet
12:28:47 <finster> i think i'll just add closing/opening transactions manually then
12:29:10 <warlord> What do yo mean by "the balances are wrong"?
12:30:14 <finster> suppose i end the year with 100 USD cash in my wallet. after the transition to the new year the balance of the wallet is zero. if i spend $20 the balance is negative, which is objectively not true
12:30:50 <finster> (yes, i know the difference between balance and balance/period)
12:31:15 <warlord> Umm... what type of account is your wallet?
12:31:29 <warlord> What transaction removed that $100 from your wallet?
12:31:59 <finster> thinking about it, the problem is only for assets. for expenses that behaviour would be totally okay
12:32:28 <warlord> The close books functionality doesn't touch assets or liabilities, only income and expense.
12:33:00 <finster> I see. so closing books is definitely the wrong thing to do
12:33:24 <warlord> Huh??
12:33:48 <warlord> I think we're talking past each other..
12:34:02 <warlord> Let's step back to your wallet example.
12:34:28 <finster> that may very well be. i'm not an accounting/financial pro, so maybe im getting terminology wrong
12:34:37 <warlord> You say you ended the year with $100 in your wallet, but now it has $0. The close books function wouldn't touch your wallet, unless you mistakenly made it an income/expense account instead of the asset it should be.
12:34:49 <warlord> So.... two questions:
12:34:56 <warlord> 1) What account type is your wallet account, and
12:35:06 <warlord> 2) what transaction removed that $100 from your wallet?
12:35:24 <finster> the wallet is a cash type account.
12:36:17 <finster> it's just that gnucahs shows a zero balance after switching booking period. so in the accounts list view the column balance(period) is just a relative view, not an absolute
12:37:52 <finster> as to 2) actually no transaction removed the $100. gnucash apparently displays it just differentl
12:37:54 <warlord> I've never used the "balance (period)" column so I don't know what it does. It likely *is* only showing you the delta balance for the period. That would always be wrong for asset accounts.
12:37:56 <finster> *differently
12:38:18 <warlord> If you close books, just use the Total column

12:43:50 <finster> thanks for taking the time, warlord!
12:44:26 <warlord> You're welcome.
12:44:44 <warlord> It's arguably a bug that that column behaves like that for assets.
12:44:47 <warlord> Maybe file a bug report?
12:45:47 <finster> i certainly can do so!

14:38:01 <jon> I'm having problems after installing. I just run it and freezes
14:43:06 <warlord> Don't use ArchLinux, but... define "freezes"?

14:45:13 <jon> Arch shows an alert saying gnucash is not responding, options are force quit or wait
14:46:29 <warlord> Let's step back.. You start gnucash and.... what happens?
14:47:45 <jon> The tip of the day show up
14:47:52 <jon> And just freeze
14:48:00 <jon> I cant do nothing after start gnucash

14:52:44 <warlord> jon: what do you see in /tmp/gnucash.trace ?

15:26:20 <andres> hi there! would you recommend an android app that plays well with gnucash?
15:26:50 <warlord> andres: there's GnuCash for Android (which, although using our name, is not actually developed by the GnuCash team)
15:40:55 <andres> cool thank you

19:53:31 <ian> greetings all
19:54:30 <ian> I seem to have a bug with the dates of my transactions being set to +1 day than they should be
19:54:49 <ian> is there a bug list I a peruse somewhere?
19:56:00 <ian> I think the bug is from loading the accounts in a later version in windows
19:59:07 <ian> random extra info if anyone sees this chat log, all the dates in my accounts have been set 1 day later than the date that is in the qif's that I import from
20:00:43 <ian> I think this happened after I upgraded my windows gnucash in November, can't recall which version at the time
20:01:18 <ian> but it's persisting after I load it into the linux version 2.6.1
