08:01:03 <anket> There is an old "Unnamed Budget" in GnuCash which was iadvertently created a while ago that I want to delete. When I navigate to 'Action' -> 'Budget' in GnuCash, there are options to create, copy, or open. How can I delete a budget?

09:01:09 <jeltsch> What are equity accounts used for? The GnuCash tutorial uses only one such an account, Equity:Opening, for the opening bookings. What other uses do equity accounts have?

11:29:41 <jralls> jeltsch: Equity is the delta between assets and liabilities; Income and Expense are technically part of Equity, and when you "close the books" the balances of those accounts are flushed to Equity so that the Income and Expense accounts can show an annual total.
11:32:07 <jralls> One way to view it is the owner's share of the assets.

15:05:48 <warlord> jeltsch: To add to what jralls said, Equity accounts are used for your instantaneous equity at fixed points in time. The first fixed point is your opening balance. You can update those points by closing the books. Also note that you can get your instantaneous equity at any point in time by running a balance sheet report. income/expense are "temporary" equity account types.
15:29:44 <jeltsch> jralls, warlord: Thanks a lot for the explanations. I think I got it now. :-)

17:57:06 <kermitjr> Howdy folks! Happy New Year! I run a small Indie Publishing Company and we've been using GNUCash for a few years. Awesome software, so thank you to everyone helping. However, I'm looking for someone who could maybe help us a bit with running reports, and ensuring our accounts are set up correctly.
17:57:57 <kermitjr> While I don't have piles of cash, I don't mind paying. But find reputable sources has proven a bit difficult, so I figure I'd go to the source. Any recommendations? or Takers? Thanks! Kermit
18:33:02 <warlord> kermitjr: do you have specific questions about running reports? There are also a lot of people on the gnucash-user mailing list who can help.
18:45:42 <kermitjr> warlord: Having a hard time getting to the info I want to pull. First problem is that we really need to know if we've entered it in correctly! :-) I'm thinking a bit of time to explain what we do, how we do it, & our current setup, then someone could help us fix stuff, if its off, and run the reports we need. So I'm looking for a semi-audit and coaching.
18:53:31 <kermitjr> The confusion comes from pulling information on specifics projects (books), author, and type of info wanted (e.g., number of books sold, expenses by category, etc.)

20:17:31 <warlord> kermitjr: sorry, had to step away for a bit. in terms of verifying that you're entering it correctly, that's what reconciliation is for -- to match your accounts vs. your banking statements.
20:18:17 <warlord> In terms of reporting... For your case I suspect you might need to write some custom reports, depending on how you record stuff "per project", etc. GnuCash doesn't really have good "project accounting"
20:18:25 <kermitjr> Warlord: I don't mean like that... I mean from the perspective of "does it make sense to enter it in with these accounts, etc."
20:18:47 <kermitjr> Agreed with your last point... which is why some coaching would be helpful.
20:19:18 <kermitjr> And though I could spend hours and hours figuring it out... I'm at a point I'd like to pay someone who can look at what we do and make some suggestions.
20:19:26 <warlord> For that you might want to try to -users or even possibly the -devel list (f you're looking to engage a developer for contract work)
20:19:49 <kermitjr> Since it's the beginning of a new year... we are up for recording things differently.... or someone helping build custom reports.
20:26:31 <kermitjr> Thanks. I send email to the user list ,so hopefully will hear back! Thanks a lot for the input. I'm going to hang here a bit in case any of them check!
20:30:04 <warlord> Considering it's still sort of a holiday, and it's 8:30pm ET.. You're unlikely to get much response tonight. But who knows. :)
