07:02:33 <john3voltas> greetings. i've just ran through the new file wizard for a simple checkbook account. during the wizard i've stated that i have an opening balance of 12.000€. so when i finished i ended up with 12.000€ in the current assets:checking account and with a *red* negative -12.000€ in equity:opening balances. any idea why this is negative and red fonted?

07:51:58 <warlord> john3voltas: because you have the preference "show negative accounts" set in a weird way (note that ths is probablly not the correct name of the option -- too early for me)
07:55:43 <john3voltas> warlord: lol, it's almost noon here but it's also too early for me too :P
07:55:57 <warlord> not even 8am here
07:56:13 <john3voltas> NY?
07:57:53 <john3voltas> i've got gnucash setup pretty much vanilla. it's the portable version from portableapps.com
07:59:38 <john3voltas> but what puzzles me is it's showing negative with the minus sign. alltutorials i find out there never show negative figures when you put some money into the opening values...
08:00:27 <warlord> Oh, have no idea how portables is configured by default.
08:00:52 <warlord> Like I sad -- it sounds like the preference is set weird.
08:01:18 <warlord> Edit -> Preferences -> Accounts [Reverse Balance Accounts]
08:01:35 <warlord> What is that set to for you? I have "Credit Accounts" chosen
08:01:43 <warlord> You probably either have Income & Expense or None
08:02:01 <warlord> We don't distrbute GnuCash Portable.
08:02:10 <warlord> So if you have questions about it you'll have to contact them.
08:02:15 <john3voltas> warlord: wow, that did it
08:02:54 <warlord> What was it set at?
08:03:55 <john3voltas> none
08:04:10 <john3voltas> but...what's that setting for?
08:04:12 <warlord> could be a portable-apps bug. you'll need to contact them if you want to know more.
08:04:25 <warlord> It does exactly what it says it does...
08:04:44 <warlord> it lets you select which accounts get shown in "reverse"
08:05:12 <john3voltas> and doesn't it have any side-effects?
08:05:32 <warlord> yes, it reverses the signs of those account displays.
08:05:44 <warlord> Oh, you meant a side effect OTHER than display?? no
08:06:05 <john3voltas> hmmmm
08:06:31 <john3voltas> not entirely sure i follow the ration
08:07:00 <warlord> What don't you understand?
08:07:57 <warlord> Accounds like Loans/Credit Cards/etc. are generally "negative" accounts. Some (most?) people would prefer to see the balance as a positive amount instead ... so this preference lets you change which account types get shown in reverse
08:08:23 <john3voltas> exactly
08:08:35 <john3voltas> i see those accounts as being negative
08:08:57 <john3voltas> but i don't get why opening balances need to show negative
08:09:07 <warlord> The exact same reason
08:09:21 <warlord> Credit/Debit
08:09:42 <john3voltas> opening balances is everything i own when i start, right?
08:10:00 <john3voltas> excuse my ignorance but english is not my native
08:10:02 <warlord> Not quite. It's all you own and all you owe
08:10:10 <john3voltas> oh
08:10:14 <warlord> You might have outstanding liabilities, too
08:10:40 <warlord> It's you Equity at start.. which may be a net credit, or may be a net debit
08:11:12 <john3voltas> how could i start with a net debit?
08:11:23 <warlord> but because Credit = -Debit --- when you Debit Bank and Credit O-B (to make a balanced transaction), ....
08:11:30 <warlord> If you owe more than you own.
08:11:44 <john3voltas> now this isn't english ignorance, it's financing ignorance...
08:11:47 <warlord> I.e., if you have a mortgage for 100,000 but a bank of only 10
08:12:07 <warlord> Yeah, I suggest you read the GnuCash Tutorial -- it's very good and explains double-entry accounting.
08:12:40 <john3voltas> that's what i've been doing the past week
08:13:15 <warlord> gotta run for a bit.
08:13:20 <john3voltas> sure

09:41:56 <lmat> john3voltas: Willkommen bei gnucash!
09:45:04 <gjanssens> lmat: why German?
09:45:04 <gncbot> gjanssens: Sent 2 days, 19 hours, and 37 minutes ago: <jralls> OK, thanks for the review. I still need to get it to build and not crash on Ubuntu 14.04 so travis can pass.
09:45:57 <gjanssens> tx gncbot :)
09:46:06 <lmat> gjanssens: You're right... john3voltas: Välkommen till gnucash! \o/
09:46:40 <gjanssens> lmat: try portuguese ;)
09:47:01 <lmat> john3voltas: Bem vindo ao Gnucash!! \o/
09:47:23 <gjanssens> There you go: a real polyglot in the community :D
09:47:28 <lmat> hah
09:47:53 <lmat> I think my german was not idiomatic, though... maybe should be willkommen im gnucash or something ^_^
09:48:40 <gjanssens> fell should be able to enlighten you but apparently he's not online
09:48:46 <warlord> haha

09:50:30 <warlord> Not I. Ich kein sprechen zie Deutch
09:50:39 <warlord> (which I'm sure I butchered the spelling)
09:50:47 <lmat> warlord: Oh, well I had it in my mind that you were a native ^_^
09:51:24 <warlord> Nope. USA

10:02:12 <gjanssens> fell: We're having some kind of a linguistic issue we need your help with here...

10:03:58 <fell> Wörtlich: Willkommen zu GnuCash; aber vom Gefühl her eher ...bei ...
10:04:34 *** gncbot sets mode: +o fell
10:05:03 <lmat> I did bei first, then changed to 'im' which must have been far off :-)
10:07:36 <fell> In would be right for locations.
10:07:49 <lmat> I see.
10:08:01 <lmat> Willkommen im #gnucash ?

10:09:05 <fell> For orgs: "bei"
10:09:20 <lmat> Okay, thanks!
10:10:05 <kjetilho> fell: and for programs (as in a splash screen), "zu"?
10:13:02 <fell> I think so
10:15:24 <john3voltas> but why welcoming me in german? :)
10:15:53 <lmat> john3voltas: It was arbitrary :-)
10:16:16 <john3voltas> ah, then that's better
10:16:17 <lmat> john3voltas: Willkommen somehow sounds more exuberant than "Welcome".
10:25:20 <fell> and "Welcome" in reply to "Thanks" would be "Bitte", wich usual means "Please" ;-)
10:25:37 <warlord> Noch ein bier, bitte?
10:25:54 <warlord> ;)
10:26:48 <fell> Noch a Moas! (on the Oktoberfest)

11:33:12 <john3voltas> when i am importing transactions from csv i can elect columns as date, description, notes, etc. what exactly are notes and how can i use them? i accidentaly imported some records using notes instead of description and now when looking at the ledger i can't find the notes.
11:49:45 <warlord> Notes are visible in double line mode.
11:50:08 <john3voltas> only?
11:50:41 <john3voltas> no wat i can see them instead ouf double line»
11:50:44 <john3voltas> ?
11:51:02 <warlord> ???
11:51:22 <john3voltas> no way*
11:51:23 <warlord> You can only see Notes when you enable double-line mode: View -> [x] Double Line Mode
11:51:29 <john3voltas> ok

12:23:47 <jralls> john3voltas: "Notes" is a free-text field (meaning that you can stick anything you like in it) that's attached to transactions and is visible only in double-line mode (View>Double-Line Mode to toggle it). Another useful free-text field is Memo, which is part of a split so you must be in one of the split views to see it.
12:24:41 *** jonas has joined #gnucash
12:29:40 <john3voltas> jralls: was thinking if it would make sense to send the csv transaction descriptions' to gnucash's notes field and then use the gnucash's description to manually input a simpler description. it would work like a categorization but then there's also the accounts which are per-se a form of categorizing stuff...
12:29:48 <john3voltas> maybe it's me overdoing it
12:34:24 *** fabior has quit IRC
12:49:30 <jralls> john3voltas: That might be overdoing it. GnuCash is really designed around using subaccounts for categorization.
12:50:38 <john3voltas> yep
12:56:20 <warlord> john3voltas: how I use it is description is the company/store name (and sometimes a description of the purchase), and then the account(s) are the actual categories. E.g. Desk: Costco (Master TV), Transfer: Expenses:Home Goods
12:57:10 <john3voltas> good tip

14:49:09 <shruggar> My custom reports have seemed to stop loading. No error message (even if I intentionally put invalid syntax into the file), they've just stopped loading. I also get no error message if I put random garbage into my ~/.gnucash/config.user file, so I suspect that the root is that this file is not loading either. Does anyone know how I can best debug this?
14:50:08 <shruggar> They stopped loading when I tried to make a minor change to the report. Reverting that change did not cause them to start loading again, however.
14:50:30 <shruggar> The report is stored in git, so I am 100% certain the change has been reverted
14:55:12 *** iliv has quit IRC
14:58:12 <warlord> Hmm, if gnucash.user isn't loading then there may be bigger issues. is there a gnucash.auto?
15:00:07 <shruggar> there is not a gnucash.auto
15:01:02 <shruggar> however, if I move the contents of the .gnucash directory to somewhere else, other files appear there after I re-open gnucash. So I know the directory is at least seen by gnucash (if not the correct place for gnucash.user itself)
15:02:38 <shruggar> config.user, that is
15:08:25 <warlord> Okay. So what does your gnucash.user look like? (please use pastebin if > 2 or 3 lines)
15:08:59 <shruggar> (load "/home/wpalmer/.gnucash/reports/stylesheet-diw.scm")
15:08:59 <shruggar> (load "/home/wpalmer/.gnucash/reports/diw-invoice.scm")
15:09:10 <shruggar> ^- contents of config.user
15:10:19 <warlord> Okay. Can you add something to "/home/wpalmer/.gnucash/reports/stylesheet-diw.scm" to ensure it's being loaded?
15:12:26 <shruggar> I have just tried adding the line "invalid stuff here" to the top, and received no error message. That said, I did receive a note telling me the file was newer than the compiled cache
15:12:34 <shruggar> I think I'll try deleting that whole cache directory
15:12:56 <warlord> Ah, yeah, that's probably a good idea.
15:15:07 <shruggar> after deleting the cache files and re-starting, it less-warningishly tells me that it is compiling those files
15:15:29 <shruggar> so I think we've proven that they *are* being loaded, the report just isn't appearing in the menu
15:16:19 <warlord> What's in your gnucash.trace file?
15:16:49 <shruggar> where might one find that?
15:18:43 <warlord> https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile
15:22:18 <shruggar> oo, that might actually be something
15:22:32 <shruggar> ERROR: Wrong type to apply: #<syntax-transformer N_>
15:30:12 <shruggar> and removing all references to "N_" has made the report load (I don't need translations for my invoices anyway)
15:30:20 <shruggar> Thank you very much for your help
