07:27:48 <dkcarlson> Hi. I amm experimenting with using Gnucash 2.6.11 on a Debian Jessie machine remote controlled by a RDC in Windows 7. This uses kioexec to work with a data file on a third machine being used as an NAS. In that scenario it seems that GnuCash automatic backups do not happen in the network server. I found a bug report that kioexec does not play well with Open Office, either, but it...
07:27:50 <dkcarlson> ...suggested that Open Office could send a signal to kioexec when to save. Where would I look to find out why backups are not being passed to the NAS?
07:30:02 *** aqua___ has quit IRC
07:39:19 <dkcarlson> When I use GnuCash directly on the remote file from the Windows machine the backups appear on the NAS as expected.
07:40:46 *** _80k has joined #gnucash
07:42:12 <dkcarlson> GnuCash is much faster in Linux, so I am looking for a way to run it on Linux. I am having issues with Debian in Virtualbox, so I am exploring alternatives.
07:44:27 <dkcarlson> Back to the kioexec scenario, GnuCash also does not make backups when the file is saved.
07:45:04 <dkcarlson> or at least they do not get back to the NAS
07:52:04 <dkcarlson> Later I may try running Gnucash directly from a local desktop on the Debian machine, but I cannot be two places at once.

09:49:14 <lmat> dkcarlson: I have a slightly similar situation. I use archlinux and my .gnucash is on a NAS. That NAS is simply another archlinux machine.
09:49:46 <lmat> dkcarlson: When I'm ready to work on the .gnucash, I use sshfs to bring the .gnucash file to my machine.
09:50:06 <lmat> dkcarlson: Is kioexec a kernel module? I've never heard of it.

11:49:42 <dkcarlson> kioexec is associated with Konqueror which is the browser that is able to find the network server in xfce or whatever desktop appears in my remote session. I have not fogured out why I am not seeing the Gnome desktop
11:54:03 <dkcarlson> I know nothing about Konqueror except that I need to use it to the NAS which resides on my LAN
11:54:48 <dkcarlson> find was supposed to be between to and the
12:00:16 <dkcarlson> the method I have been using is to use Konqueror to open the directory containing the correct copy of the data file then rigt click it to open it with GnuCash. then GnuCash appears to be working on a local copy in some temp directory which it does copy back to the NAS when I close Gnucash

15:31:39 <CapitenPi> does gnucash support guile2?
15:32:24 <CapitenPi> according to README.dependencies it requiers guile version 1.8.5 or 2.0.0 and i have 2.0.11
16:05:40 <dkcarlson> I am back. As I was saying, I am not very familiar with Gnome but totally new to the other desktop that appeared in this remote control session. Still trying to migrate away from windows without my wife noticing.
16:06:36 <dkcarlson> oh, I mean without screwing up her windows macjine
16:11:54 <dkcarlson> That is a fresh installation of Jessie with 3 or four desktops (because it has a large hard drive and I wanted to try the others) but it should have defaulted to Gnome, which I have played with enough to be dangerous.

16:42:39 <lmat> dkcarlson: I'm not aware of any logic like that in Gnucash (if the file is on a certain type of file system, do all work in a temporary directory and copy it over when we're done).
16:42:51 <lmat> hah
16:43:00 <lmat> hah @ "without my wife noticing" My wife definitely noticed!

19:19:43 <dkcarlson> I saw the age of that bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252026 and I cannot believe that it is still open. It sure describes exactly what I am seeing. BTW, I went to the machine, logged into the Gnome desktop, which for some reason is not the default, but while it takes forever to find the Samba share, Gnucash backups are saved to the file server
19:22:51 <dkcarlson> what is different about Open Office and GnuCash compared to eg LibreOffice such that this is an issue?
