14:27:19 <benste> hi there , anybody had issues that exports as qif from the mobile app fail if foreign currency is involved? i was able to recover backups and export .gnca files, but those seem to be next to impossible to import into my GnuCash on Ubuntu ...
14:28:56 <benste> gnucash version on ubunut is 2.6.6
14:32:20 <warlord> benste: first, 2.6.12 is current; you should update. Second, I have no idea what a ".gnca" file is -- could you elucidate?
14:33:14 <benste> hello warlord, i'm running a stable ubuntu version ... don't really like to update outside of the official sources ...
14:33:34 <benste> gnca is the file ending of an export from the app
14:33:42 <benste> e.g. 20160517_201617_gnucash_export.gnca
14:33:57 <benste> seems to be XML
14:33:58 <warlord> then you should use getdeb to update.
14:33:59 <benste> https://www.dropbox.com/s/cb8dqaeeie7mtvx/20160517_201617_gnucash_export.gnca?dl=0
14:34:25 <benste> could we try to solve the issue first an ellaborate about updating afterwards ?
14:34:55 <warlord> Maybe not. There are lots of bugs in the early 2.6 series
14:35:00 <warlord> (at least you're not running 2.6.1)
14:35:22 <warlord> But if your .gnca file is XML, it's probably not QIF
14:35:32 <warlord> What happens if you File -> Open it?
14:35:53 <benste> i get an xml in firefox :)
14:36:07 <benste> seems to be a whole account tree maybe even including bookings
14:36:09 <warlord> How would File -> OPen in GnuCash drive a firefox window?
14:36:26 <benste> hehe opened it in nautilus sorry
14:36:32 <benste> didnt consider open in gnucash - only tried import
14:37:07 <benste> warlord: seems to open correctly in gnucash
14:37:18 <benste> now i only need to move it to the right file
14:37:25 <benste> i'll try export in gnucash
14:38:03 <warlord> I think what's going on here is that the android app is trying to *share* your data file..
14:40:32 <benste> warlord: ?
14:40:41 <benste> you mean the xml?
14:40:50 <benste> possibly - at least the data is not completly lost ...
14:40:53 <warlord> Yes, it's attemping to share the data file.
14:41:08 <benste> but the colums of the csv seem to differ from what i can import
14:41:16 <warlord> It's like using gnucash on two different systems. Open on desktop, use, save, then open on android, use, save, back and forth.
14:41:33 <warlord> Yes, the CSV export from gnucash cannot be re-imported.. Known issue
14:42:08 <benste> hehe so either i would have to write myself a small script to import all transactions or copy everything manually - right?
14:42:53 <benste> or can i copy transactions from one window to another one ?
14:43:31 <benste> it looks like otherwise i'll end up with more than 500 lines to copy ...
14:43:44 <benste> so far its only 4-5 files (3 weeks of transactions)
14:43:47 <warlord> I dont think you're understanding. You dont have to copy anything. Just use the dropbox file to share the data file between desktop and android.
14:44:16 *** Mechtilde has quit IRC
14:45:14 <jralls> warlord, perhaps benste has an existing desktop file and didn't load it when he entered the transactions in gcfa, so now he needs to combine the two.
14:45:34 <benste> what is gcfa ?
14:45:37 <warlord> If that's the case, try using gnucash2qif?
14:45:46 <warlord> benste: he meant gnca
14:46:18 <benste> yes they aren't in the main file because the main file is only on my PC, i use the phone to enter transactions only and later merge them into my main file
14:46:19 <jralls> benste GnuCash For Android.
14:46:24 <benste> jralls: yes
14:47:01 <benste> hopefully gnucash for android is not using gnucash2qif for the qif export, otherwise this component would be the buggy one :)
14:47:17 <benste> you're talking about https://gnucashtoqif.us/
14:47:19 <benste> ?
14:48:44 <benste> tried that tool a few minutes ago, thats the one which seems to load forever as soon as i select a folder with a gnca file in it
14:49:34 <benste> haha useability ... file type selector needs to be all to load subdirectories
14:50:04 <warlord> benste: I have never used gnucash2qif personally, so I cannot attest to its usefulness.
14:50:56 <warlord> If you didn't load your data into gnca first, then you will need to do a qif import; I *believe* there is a way to do that, but I've not used gnca either, and it's not actually *our* product.
14:51:38 <benste> but the developers to a good job in pretending it is ;)
14:52:45 <benste> i suppose if there is a known bug report that transactions can not be exported and imported again within the real GnuCash its probably not an easy fix ...
14:53:15 <warlord> The CSV export/import is known
14:53:58 <Simon> warlord: do you run your VMs on a Debian/Ubuntu host?
14:54:24 <warlord> No

14:57:55 <benste> warlord: i'll probably try the hardway and at least get dates and values and the main account by using the csv manually, only one more question the colum ToNum and From Num. - -are these supposed to be deposit and withdrawl ?
14:58:32 <benste> e.g. if i spend 22 GHC and the number is "-22" is that a deposit of -22 ?
15:01:25 <benste> its getting even harder because of a wrong date format ... :) to be continued
15:01:46 <warlord> I'm honestly not at all sure about the csv import/export formats.. sorry.
15:01:53 <warlord> I'm most familiar with qif

15:52:47 <f8x2n3> Hello! I'd like to get into open source development, and since I regularly use gnucash I figured I could maybe contribute to it. Aside from subscribing to the mailing list and reading the wiki, how do I get started properly?
16:01:35 *** bertbob has joined #gnucash
16:10:50 <warlord> f8x2n3: you can read the wiki and mail archives for suggestions ..... First thing I'd suggest is building the code (use --prefix=/some/unique/path), and then pick a bug that scratches your itch.
16:11:48 <f8x2n3> ok!
16:12:15 <warlord> f8x2n3: dont be afraid to ask questions.

16:27:08 <finster> dear all. can i make gnucash 2.6.12 *never ever* do a split transaction until I tell it explicitly to do so? cleaning up an alleged split transaction is so tedious.
16:33:20 <finster> well, apparently, filling out account and amount before the description helps. usability yay
16:36:08 <jralls> finster: No. I expect that your problem is that autofill is picking a split transaction for you. Having more control over autofill is a frequent request.
16:43:23 <finster> jralls: yes, autofill is kicking in
16:44:00 <finster> jralls: thanks for your reply, though. got it sorted

17:57:08 <f8x2n3> I'm having trouble building from source, I believe because of this: "make[5]: *** No rule to make target 'gnc-date.cpp', needed by 'gnc-date.lo'. Stop."

18:17:49 <jralls> f8x2n3: That's a file in master. Sounds like maybe you tried to build master then switched to maint without doing a distclean. What platform are you building on?
18:20:26 <jralls> warlord: A win32 maint build finished in under 4 hours; before your reboot it was failing after ~14 hours. I don't think that the success was due to the reboot, just the much better speed.
18:26:20 <jralls> warlord: Looks like the performance started going south around mid-March, so at about 140 days uptime. Reboot the VM host every 4 months?

21:39:39 <JustAQuestion> Hi - Thank you for GnuCash, I have been using it for years. I want to write a small app for my phone where I can record my cash transactions. It will just be 5 fields (amount, date, description, debit account, credit account). The idea is to create a file to import later into GnuCash. As far as I know QIF (which I use to import my bank's statement)
21:39:39 <JustAQuestion> does not have fields for debit/credit account. Is there a way to import that information (without choosing accounts)?
