11:54:43 <dklann> Anyone running GnuCash on Gentoo? I recently lost the ability to see reports inside of the GnuCash app. The reports are successfully created in /tmp/gnc-report-*.html, but the tabs (windows) are blank. GnuCash version 2.6.11 emerged without errors. GnuCash chose webkit-gtk version 2.4.9-r200 when it installed. Thoughts anyone? Thanks!

12:22:29 <jralls> dklann: See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=763279.
12:26:39 <dklann> jralls: thanks! That all looks familiar. I'll try editing the .scm file...
12:28:24 <jralls> dklann: Could you try the header change in html-document.scm first? I'd prefer that as I think it's a more general fix if it works.
12:28:59 <dklann> Ah. Yes, now I see there is a .scm file for each report. I'll try html-document.scm.
12:34:00 <dklann> That did it! Thanks jralls! I'll post a comment to the bug report.
12:34:25 <jralls> Excellent. I'll make that change for 2.6.12. Thanks.

13:34:45 <Avernos> what is the difference between income and charge?
13:37:14 <jralls> Avernos: In what context?
13:37:27 <Avernos> jralls, not sure how to answer that. On income?
13:37:57 <jralls> Umm, where are you seeing the two terms?
13:37:58 <Avernos> when entering an amount. there are two input areas named income or charge
13:38:13 <Avernos> when opening an income account/tab
13:40:40 <jralls> A charge is a decrease in the income account, and income is an increase. If you're familiar with the accounting terms "debit" and "credit" you may prefere to turn on formal accounting labels in Preferences on the Accounts tab.
13:41:30 <jralls> You might book a charge if you're very strict about not editing existing entries and need to reduce the amount of booked income because of a mistake.
13:42:07 <Avernos> jralls, ok, thanks. i think i get an idea. im just confused that when entering a plain income, there is an automatic cloned transaction with same amount in charge
13:43:05 <Avernos> <--- newbie!
13:44:03 <jralls> Ah, that would be because you didn't specify a counter-account in the transaction. This is double-entry accounting, not Quicken or KMyMoney. Start by reading the Tutorial and Concepts Guide (you can get it on the website or the help menu). If you still don't understand what's going on try a basic accounting or book-keeping book.
13:44:35 <Avernos> jralls, alright. cant understand why would be done it like that. i guess it makes more sense for an accoutnant. but i can operate like that, ^^
13:45:35 <Avernos> ok, i know double-entry, just surprised its done automatically and uhm, well on same account
13:46:24 <jralls> It's on the same account because you told it to by putting the same account in the "Transfer" field.
13:47:06 <Avernos> ha! yeah, its all more clear now
13:47:56 <jralls> Most users will work in a bank account register and select the appropriate income or expense account for each entry. If you work in an income register then you need to specify the bank account that the money went to.
13:48:05 <Avernos> thanks jralls, i've gone perhaps too fast on the docs, and too easy on youtube. i guess youtube wasnt very helpful
13:48:44 <jralls> Maybe the YouTube video wasn't clear enough about what register they were using.
13:49:50 <Avernos> have to say, i'm a bit surprised that i couldnt find some decent videos on youtube. perhaps a couple of them but not enough to get started
13:50:24 <Avernos> tried to stick to recent ones, afraid of old versions differences. i might want to rethink that
13:52:02 <jralls> Nothing that beginners would care about has changed in many years, so I wouldn't worry about that.

14:59:47 <CopeIam> anyone know why Grand total and Net Assest aren't showing up at the bottom of gnucash? Could this be related to the crash i get whenever I run a report?
15:01:43 <CopeIam> Just to clarify. The amounts are not showing next to each: Grand Total and Net Assets.
15:10:43 *** hoijui has quit IRC
15:15:05 <jralls> CopeIam: Not likely related to the crash. The left side label isn't a field, it's a row label. Click the down-arrow on the right end to see the other rows.
15:15:58 <jralls> It might be that Net Assets is empty on the Grand Total line because you have some asset for which you don't have a price to your default currency.

16:34:06 <CopeIam> Here is the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error I get when I try to run Reports in Gnucash: Runtime Error!
16:35:17 <CopeIam> Program: C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash.exe
16:35:57 <CopeIam> This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
16:36:04 <jralls> CopeIam: Not terribly helpful, is it? Find your latest tracefile (see http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile) and put it on PasteBin.
16:37:53 <CopeIam> I will. i keep getting the same wording in the trace file
16:45:46 <CopeIam> trouble finding it in windows 10
16:49:18 <jralls> c:\users
16:49:18 <CopeIam> http://pastebin.com/U5CntQZ4
16:52:01 <jralls> Found it before I did, I see. That's disappointing, no information. I was hoping for more. Try running it in a command window.
16:52:27 <CopeIam> not sure how to do that?
16:53:23 *** gjanssens has quit IRC
16:53:34 <jralls> click start, type command into the search box next to start, click "command prompt". Type
16:54:47 <jralls> "c:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash.exe. But I just tried it and it doesn't keep focus, it just launches, so anything going to standard error is still lost.
16:55:18 <CopeIam> I'll try maybe???????????
16:55:56 <jralls> Yeah, but add " --debug" to the end, without the quotes.
16:56:08 <CopeIam> ok
16:58:02 <jralls> That will at least generate some trace data to give the context of the failure even if the scheme error is lost.
16:58:09 <CopeIam> do i need the -- before debug
16:59:27 <jralls> Yes, also one space before that.
17:01:13 <CopeIam> i keep getting program is not recognized
17:01:24 <CopeIam> i changed director to c and same thing
17:01:25 *** bertbob has quit IRC
17:04:44 <jralls> You do need quotes around the path to gnucash.exe because of the spaces in "Program Files (x86)". If you use tab completion windows will add them for you. Type c:\Pro<TAB><BACKSPACE><SPACE>(<TAB>\gnuc<TAB>bin\gnuc<TAB>
17:08:46 <CopeIam> it opened an "unsaved book" of gnucash
17:09:30 <jralls> I bet you typed "-- debug" instead of " --debug".
17:10:13 <CopeIam> no. it's --debug at the end
17:10:52 <jralls> OK. Well, use File>Open to go to your regular file.
17:11:57 <CopeIam> "c:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\guncash.exe" --debug is this correct?
17:13:59 <jralls> Should be.
17:14:30 <CopeIam> got that error that it couldn't obtain a lock. I selected open anyway.
17:15:11 <jralls> That's expected after a crash and you made the right choice.
17:15:32 <CopeIam> just an fyi. I had vs 2.6.11 but rolled back to 2.6.9 as in vs .9 i was able to open reports
17:16:08 <CopeIam> It's taking a long time to load
17:16:12 <jralls> That's good to know, it identifies it as a regression.
17:16:13 <CopeIam> is that normal?
17:16:14 *** bertbob has joined #gnucash
17:16:39 <jralls> It will take longer to load, it's writing out a lot of stuff to disk.
17:16:57 <jralls> I need to go start my stew for dinner. I'll be back in 1/2 hour or so.
17:17:11 <CopeIam> sounds good thank you

17:41:48 <CopeIam> Interesting. After the "debug start, file, open the Net Assests are showing, but the Grand Total still doesn't.
17:47:24 <jralls> You misunderstood: Net Assets and Profit are the value of Grand Total. If you click the arrow on the far right of that line it will drop down with more lines.
