I figured that if I took out a loan for 500, the starting value of the liability would be increased by -500, which in turn would transfer as a decrease under Equity:Opening Balance. While the liability eventually goes to 0 the Equity:Opening Balance value does not adjust....

08:25:48 <warlord> anket: that is correct. the Equity accounts show your equity at a fixed point in time (i.e., the date you started accounting). For your instantaneous equity at any other point in time you need to run a Balance Sheet Report.
