10:39:29 <MechtiIde> I try to create this screenshot again: gnucash-guide/figures/invest_stockvalue_report.png
10:40:04 <MechtiIde> it is in chapter 8.6.5 of the guide
10:40:36 <MechtiIde> I don't understand which report I have to use?

14:17:41 <Sylvie> Does anyone have any experience with using GNUCash with files supplied by the Dutch ABN Amro bank? I can't manage to import anything from them, not even MT940.

19:24:11 <Modoc> can gnucash work with a passworded zip file?
19:25:02 <Modoc> ie keep its database files inside of the passworded zip file. and then save them back to the file on save.
19:35:49 <jralls> Modoc: Only if you can make the zip file look like a directory to GnuCash.
19:39:31 *** Sylvie has quit IRC
19:47:41 <Modoc> jralls there is no way to make gnucash open the zip file So I would have to look like a mountable drive?
19:48:35 <jralls> Modoc: Something like that. I use an encrypted disk image on my Mac. Works great. I'm afraid I don't know how to do that on any other OS, though.
19:48:45 <Modoc> And GnuCash can not password files can it?
19:49:30 <Modoc> jralls ok thats the way I was looking at going. Moving my mom to it. And as little steps as posable is better.
19:49:41 <jralls> Modoc: No, there's no way that GnuCash could adequately secure a file to make passwords worthwhile. The dev team doesn't know enough about encryption to do that right.
19:49:43 <Modoc> and thanks for the info.
19:50:12 <jralls> Modoc: You're welcome.
19:51:34 <Modoc> I wounder if they have thouth of that thow. like if os == window { } is os == ios { } and so on. and just use the OS's arciving tools.
19:55:45 <jralls> Modoc: Archiving is skew to passwords and encryption. We offer gzip compression of xml files, see Preferences>General. IIRC it's enabled by default.
19:56:49 <jralls> In general we avoid OS-specific code if possible. There's a bit of Mac-specific stuff to make the menus work right and to get the Help to display in the default browser. That's about it.
19:57:35 *** merric has quit IRC
19:57:44 <Modoc> ok thanks
21:01:46 <warlord> Modoc, jralls -- it's not that the dev team doesn't know enough about encryption to do it right (I do that for a living) -- it's that GNUCASH isn't an encryption program, it's an accounting program. And the devs (historically) have felt that if you want to protect your data you should use data protection tools to do so.
21:02:08 <warlord> Just adding a password isn't right -- unless you encrypt. And then we'd get lots of "I forgot my password" support questions.

21:30:04 <Modoc> warlord I understand what you are talking about. Theys why I was asking if they had some kind of command line set up to just pass off a password to a 3ed party program like 7zip or something like that. My mom is ussing Quicken 99 and I am moving her to win10 and you can not run that version of quicken in 10 but she wishes to have a password on her files. The sad thing is she douse not need
21:30:05 <Modoc> a password.
21:30:28 <Modoc> The password she uses is so weak its not worth anything.
21:30:57 <Modoc> But it would be hard to explane that to her.
21:33:38 <Modoc> So I will use something like VeraCrypt I guess. But then the online backup would not get the file when it changes. I do wounder if it changes the archiving flag on changing something inside the folder
21:34:47 <warlord> TrueCrypt, PGP, etc... But not directly connected to GnuCash
21:35:15 <Modoc> right but they will make a mountable drive and it can,.
21:39:35 <Modoc> but that is just my thinking.
21:43:06 <Modoc> And my next trick or treat's are getting so much Candy.
22:03:29 <warlord> Heh
22:53:41 <Modoc> ok its coming up on 10pm I got about 780 pices of candy. And only gave away about 150 wounder if I can return the unopen bag Or just do like last year and give it all to the kids that play in the streat.
22:53:48 <Modoc> steet even
22:54:25 <Modoc> rrrrrr street even
