09:20:44 <sh4wn> Hi all, I live in a large student dormitory, were we have a shared bank account, which allows us to buy some stuff at large (like beer, soda and more). One only has to put a mark on a piece of paper, and then someone is allowed to grab a beer from the fridge. Once in a while someone collects all the papers with the marks, and sends a bill to each person in our student dormitory. I'm currently busy with a migration from a handmade excel shee
09:20:44 <sh4wn> t to a more professional bookkeeping using GNUCash.
09:21:21 <sh4wn> One thing though: if someone pays something in advance (no invoice sent yet), how would one register that
09:21:22 <sh4wn> ?
09:23:13 <sh4wn> And when you're at the point to send an invoice again, how to incoperate the payments in advance?
09:23:19 <sh4wn> Thanks in advance

15:47:40 <jralls> warlord: If you mean Hossein, he's either completely unable to use a computer or a troll.
15:49:16 <warlord> LOL. Yes, that's who I mean.
15:49:56 <warlord> He's in UTC+0600 so most likely not English as a first language
15:51:26 <warlord> He's asking legitimate questions. Just not reading the answers.

18:27:49 <alexanderbarker> Hello. I just loaded my accounting.gnucash file only to find all the transactions had (seemingly?) disappeared. The account structure is intact, but all accounts are empty. Loading backups yields the same result. Am I making a mistake somewhere or has this data truly disappeared? Thanks for the help!
18:29:29 <alexanderbarker> The one thing I did before this happened that might conceivably be related is that I exported Account Structure to CSV. But the files that have lost all transaction data are not the new CSV file I created. They are the gnucash xml files (main and backup).

21:43:53 <warlord> alexanderbarker: how did you export it?
21:44:00 <warlord> Did you use File -> Export Accounts?
21:44:05 <alexanderbarker> Yes
21:44:08 <warlord> THat would save a completely empty account structure
21:44:29 <warlord> Look under "File -> Recent Files" and see if you have your old file around.
21:44:40 <warlord> If you overwrote it with the same filename, then you effectively destroyed your own data.
21:45:00 <alexanderbarker> :) Thanks. I didn’t overwrite it, though…
21:45:24 <warlord> Then in the File menu you should see the name of your actual data file
21:45:33 <alexanderbarker> I do
21:45:46 <warlord> It would not be the top one...
21:45:47 <alexanderbarker> And opening that I get the empty account tree
21:46:12 <alexanderbarker> Is it the one that doesn’t have a long string of numbers?
21:46:25 <warlord> The long string of numbers is a backup file..
21:46:28 <alexanderbarker> (I should have said that I’m on Mac OS X, if that complicates things...)
21:46:33 <warlord> It does not
21:46:45 <warlord> However... on a Mac you cannot double-click on a file to open it...
21:47:07 <alexanderbarker> Yes — so the file that I thought was my main file is the one that is simply called “Accounting.gnucash”? That’s the one that is only an account tree now
21:47:10 <warlord> On a mac you *must* use the File -> OPen menu item
21:47:28 <warlord> Well, what did you call your original data file?
21:47:57 <warlord> (and if you say "I don't remember" I will slap you upside the head) :)
21:48:18 <alexanderbarker> That’s the original data file. (Very imaginative, I know.)
21:48:35 <alexanderbarker> And the csv I called something like “accounts.csv”
21:48:50 <alexanderbarker> (Not accounting.csv, and not accounting.gnucash)
21:50:50 <alexanderbarker> I realise this is a bit of a baffling case.
21:52:20 <alexanderbarker> Even if I had overwritten the file (which I am pretty sure I didn’t… but I suppose I can’t be sure), wouldn’t one of the many backups still work? As I open them, they are just the same — an empty account tree
21:54:33 <warlord> "File -> Export accounts" does not save a .csv... it saves a .gnucash file
21:54:44 <warlord> So ... if you called it "Accounts", then you overwrote your data file
21:55:18 <warlord> How about you open a terminal window (or finder) and take a look at the file dates and sizes.
21:57:42 <warlord> Most likely some of the backup files are from after you overwrote your data file.
21:58:08 <warlord> ... but there *should* be a backup file around... You just need to figure out which one it is (which file size should tell you)
21:58:44 <alexanderbarker> OK — sorry, I think I did both “File -> export accounts” and “File -> export account tree to CSV” — so of course the first of those was a gnucash file.
21:58:58 <alexanderbarker> OK — I can see a sudden drop of filesize
21:59:34 *** Trelane has quit IRC
22:00:14 <alexanderbarker> Thanks. The backup does contain a lot of the data I had inputted.
22:00:32 <warlord> Make sure you rename the backup file to something "reasonable"
22:00:46 <warlord> You can do this either via Finder and then File -> Open.
22:00:51 <alexanderbarker> I do that using “Save As”?
22:00:54 <warlord> Or within GnuCash you can open the backup and then Save As
22:01:05 <alexanderbarker> OK — I’ll do the second one.
22:01:43 <alexanderbarker> I do normally possess the skills not to overwrite files when exporting! But I must have somehow made a mistake…
22:01:52 <alexanderbarker> Thanks for your help (and patience)
22:02:06 <warlord> You're welcome.
22:02:10 <warlord> Glad you found your data
22:02:30 <alexanderbarker> Yes! I had started manually re-inputting it. Glad not to have to go through all that again.
22:02:41 <warlord> :)
22:02:45 <alexanderbarker> :)
