10:58:26 <k4i> hi
11:03:27 <k4i> I'm using GnuCash 2.4.11 (r22264M built 2012-07-14) on OS X and I'm wondering which exchange rate value and why is used in Cash Flow reports.
11:04:24 <k4i> The "problem" I'm observing is that in my Cash Flow report EUR and other currency is displayed in my default currency and that exchange rate value is an old one.
11:05:02 *** cartsoftware has quit IRC
11:05:48 <k4i> It is never updated and clearly GnuCash doesn't try to convert each foreign currency transaction into default currency equivalent using specific to each such transaction exchange rate value.
11:06:07 <k4i> Which seems to me like one way to do it in order to have a more accurate Cash Flow report
11:06:08 <warlord> k4i: 2.6.7 is the current release.
11:06:36 <warlord> As for which exchange rate value is used --- what do you have configured in the report options?
11:06:47 <k4i> let me see....
11:07:35 <k4i> "Nearest in time"
11:07:45 <k4i> that is "Price source"
11:08:07 <k4i> I admit I've been ignoring this pull down list all this time...
11:08:15 <warlord> Okay, so that means it's pulling in prices from the PriceDB
11:08:38 <warlord> and it's choosing the entry nearest in time to the transaction
11:08:40 *** rickoehn has quit IRC
11:08:41 *** rickoehn has joined #gnucash
11:09:29 <k4i> what is PriceDB? A 3rd party service?
11:10:07 <warlord> Nope, internal.
11:10:21 <warlord> BUT if you're not doing "Get Quotes" often then you wont have a good population of quotes in the PriceDB
11:10:29 <k4i> I don't
11:10:42 <k4i> Never done before, I believe
11:11:22 <warlord> Well, then, that's also why the numbers aren't changing, because you're not adding price quotes.
11:12:17 <k4i> This suggests GnuCash doesn't actually rely on the exchange rate values recorded when entering transaction into a ledger?
11:15:29 <warlord> Well, you're using a VERY old version... At some point the feature was added that entering a transaction will add a PriceDB entry. However I dont remember when that was added.
11:17:29 <k4i> I see
11:18:08 <k4i> Is upgrade hassle free? As in, I just install a new version and GnuCash pick up my ledger files and I'm good?
11:18:51 <warlord> From 2.4 to 2.6 you might need to reset open windows/reports, and you might need to tell 2.6 where to find your data file (via File -> Open), but in general, yes.
11:20:10 <k4i> Alright, sounds easy

11:22:34 <warlord> Especally on a Mac!
11:23:39 <k4i> Frankly, I would feel more comfortable with apt-get (or yum, or pacman, any decent package manager) doing an upgrade than having to manually uninstall/install a new version on Mac
11:27:10 <warlord> All you need to do is download the DMG and copy it to your /Applications folder
11:27:21 <warlord> (well, copy the GnuCash.app inside the DMG)
11:27:24 <warlord> It's pretty easy
11:27:49 <warlord> Feel free to remove or rename the existing GnuCash.app

11:45:54 <k4i> alright, let's try the simple way first
11:46:05 <k4i> kind of a fan of "doing things right" ;D
11:54:23 <k4i> I swear one day I won't install a single upgrade *sigh*
11:54:34 <k4i> Total column http://i.imgur.com/HZHuUln.png
11:56:12 <k4i> Not sure if it is a problem or a UI design change but a selected ledger entry no longer is highlighted in black
11:56:28 <k4i> There's also no bliking text input marker
11:57:02 <k4i> reverted back to 2.4
11:57:11 <k4i> trying out 2.6 some time later
11:57:12 <k4i> ;D
11:58:52 <k4i> Nice new graphs, though
11:59:00 <k4i> and Export to PDf is very nice too
12:01:17 <k4i> hey warlord btw are there any plans to sync android gnucash ledgers with desktop ones?
12:01:21 <k4i> so much needed feature
12:05:08 <k4i> correction, not just in black but also in yellow. In othe words I do a LMB click on an entry in a ledger and it visually doesn't change.

12:51:09 <warlord> k4i: jralls is the Mac guy, so he's the best guy to talk to about Mac stuff specifically.
13:01:50 <warlord> Looks like there's a font issue for your currency symbol in the total column.
13:02:15 <warlord> I'm not sure what you mean by "no bliking text input marker"
13:02:59 <warlord> As for the android app -- it can load/save the GnuCash XML data file, so you can directly share files across. Your other option is to use QIF import to get transaction from android into the desktop version.

13:29:07 <k4i> warlord, is it called "text input cursor"?
13:29:22 <k4i> you know, the blinking | symbol?
13:31:08 <k4i> warlord, I like 2.4.11. It's stable, it doesn't have any issues that affect me. The currency exchange values in reports is a minor thing really. I just wanted more accurate info but it's not worth it if 2.6 bring a slew of other problems along the way ;D
13:31:40 *** lwells has joined #gnucash
13:33:12 <k4i> warlord, as for android, the question is whether the devs (are you part of the development team?) are at least considering to make a "cloud sync service" of some kind, you know how the modern age mobile apps are.
13:34:20 <k4i> importing doesn't solve the problem of "I entered a few transactions on my phone, then 2 more on desktop and I want it all synced across the two devices"
13:40:30 *** mlncn_ has quit IRC
13:54:19 <warlord> k4i: the android project is completely separate from us. They just use our name and we help advertise. But there is no crossover in development.
13:54:29 <warlord> As for cloud service -- Dropbox.

16:29:07 <jralls> warlord: Is there a way to clean up code.gnucash.org/builds/win32/build-logs from the VM server? There's a bit more history there than I think we need.
16:32:41 <warlord> jralls: sure. I'll clean it up this weekend or early next week.
16:33:12 <jralls> I think you mean "No, but I'll..."
16:33:42 <jralls> Or maybe misunderstood "is there a way to..."
16:36:54 <warlord> There is no way for anyone other than me to do it.
16:41:16 <jralls> Ok. Maybe a cron job to run `find wherever/the/logs/are -mtime +90 -delete`...
16:50:46 <warlord> Except that's not quite what I want, most of the time.
16:50:56 <warlord> I do keep some old logs..

17:22:15 <jralls> In that directory? I'm not suggesting it for all of your logs, just the win32 build logs.
17:27:01 <warlord> I'd have to look; I thought I had a process for choosing what to keep and what to dump. I usually clean it out once or twice a year.

19:41:25 <elb> hey all, I've tried to set up a counter for invoices (several times, actually, I've been entering them by hand) for the format 2015-%06d (where 2015 is the year, and can be set by hand on a per-account-file-basis, as I use one file per year), but when I create an invoice it's numbered 0000NN instead of 2015-0000NN; any ideas why?
19:42:09 <elb> digging through the source code doesn't suggest any reason why 2015-%06d wouldn't work, as I trace the invoice number generation back from the dialog code to the qof code
