07:09:39 <dgtlmoon> jralls, a quick one - after i import, all is fine, all my expenses are set etc, but the top level 'expenses' is the same as my "liabilities: credit card" value, (ive only imported credit card at this point), is this because i dont understand double entry accounting properly right?

08:52:44 <gjanssens> dgtlmoon: the top level "expenses" is the sum of all expenses in the sub accounts
08:53:24 <gjanssens> if you have only imported credit card and that credit card only had expenses listed, then this is to be expected
08:54:06 <gjanssens> Each transaction on you credit card will have one split in 'liabilities:credit card' and one or more balancing splits in some expense account
08:54:56 <gjanssens> That's double accounting: money always goes from somewhere to somewhere
08:55:09 <gjanssens> It can't appear or disappear out of nowhere.

12:12:24 <gjanssens> 2.6.7 should be able to properly handle multi-currency payments (with or without trading accounts)

13:10:34 <jralls> gjanssens_: Yes, I saw that on "patches". Thanks!
13:14:56 <jralls> gjanssens_: When you have a chance, please have a look at https://github.com/jralls/gnucash/commit/50002a342e613d0be6b08915c317dd8924d05ba2. I think that will make it feasible, maybe even easy, to fix https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645786.
13:15:36 <jralls> gjanssens_: Way too invasive to backport, of course. Maybe we should just remove the option from maint.

13:24:44 <jralls> dgtlmoon: To answer your question directly, yes. gjanssens already explained what you don't yet understand. Please study the first chapter of the Tutorial and Concepts Guide. If the principles are still unclear there are any number of tutorial books and websites available. Google is your friend.

20:29:07 <Simpleton> Hi there! Noob entrepreneur here trying to use gnucash to make sense of my impending doom :) Trying to get the hang of the double-entry system and my current doubt is as follows:
20:39:01 <Simpleton> while registering the payment of employees as expenses, I'd like to separate what is payed directly to them (e.g. account "expenses:jessica") from the taxes which I have to pay over their base salary to the government. I have a separate expenses account named "expenses:TAXES". Guess I'm trying to do a triple entry... :D that is: the part of a employee's payment that goes to taxes would be withdrawed from (e.g.) "Expenses:Jessica" account and inserted
20:39:01 <Simpleton> into the "expenses:Taxes" account - however, all the money on the "expenses:taxes" account should also be a withdrawal from my "assets:bank" account.
20:40:26 <Simpleton> I'm obviously going about this in some dumb noob way. Can someone please point me in the right direction here? I'll be waiting. Thanks in advance
