18:59:16 <linas> I fucking hate linux
18:59:30 <linas> what is wrong with the people at debian, ubuntu?
19:00:12 <linas> I just want my computer to boot, and the godamn fucktards who maintain debian and ubuntu have so totally fucked the boot process
19:00:25 <linas> after a popwer loss, my computers should boot
19:00:44 <linas> I should not be a rocket surgeon or brain scientist to boot my servers!
19:01:09 <linas> how can distro maintainers be so totally and utterly out of touch with reality?
19:01:16 <linas> what is wrong with them?
19:01:30 <linas> Are they all teenagers who just don't give a shit?
19:01:59 <linas> this is why linux has been a total failure
19:03:52 <linas> this is what the microsoft windows experience used to be like, and this is why I swtiched to linux
19:04:03 <linas> and now linux has turned into windows
19:04:41 <linas> arghhh

19:25:15 <nsxt> Hi all. I've been reading about double-entry bookkeeping and I think I understand it... Then I checked how GNUCash sets the "value_num" field for accounts with a credit balance, and I'm confused...
19:27:00 <nsxt> E.g., in my "Income" account, for any entered positive value, "value_num" ends up being negative.
19:28:03 <nsxt> It's a credit account, meaning credits increase the balance of the account, so shouldn't a credit in this case be positive?
19:28:44 *** meb has quit IRC
19:28:54 <nsxt> (I'm not referencing the GUI, everything shows up just fine. I exported the data to a sqlite db and was poking around; that's where I saw the negative "value_num".)
20:22:04 <nsxt> Okay, so after more poking around... is it safe to say that all "Credits" in GNUCash are represented using negative "value_num"s, and all "Debits" are represented using positive "value_num"s?

21:07:30 <warlord> linas: first guess: systemd
21:07:55 <warlord> linas: FYI: DNSSEC didn't re-sign on 5/11
21:09:29 <warlord> nsxt: Yes. Debits are always positive (money flowing *into* the account) and Credits are always negative (money flowing OUT of the account). This is why debits are always + and credits are always -.
21:09:49 <warlord> Now, that is completely orthogonal to whether the accounts "increases" or "decreases" with a debit.
21:10:41 <warlord> that's really, purely a matter of how the UI displays it, to make the numbers make sense to us humans. Otherwise your credit card account would always be negative when you have a balance, which would probably confuse most people.
21:12:23 <nsxt> warlord: Thank you!
21:25:04 <warlord> nsxt: happy to help/
