13:03:22 <jbwiv> all, I'm assessing kmymoney versus gnucash. So far, I've found gnucash to be superior in most of what I care about...with one very big drawback...the inability to edit/manipulate transactions in batch. is there a reason for this missing functionality, or is it just something no one has taken an interest in developing?

13:27:09 <mib_a3ntob> hello, new user here. I am setting up gnucash for my small company and I wanted to know what would be the easiest way to have the software calculate the sales taxes I own the government
13:27:39 <mib_a3ntob> My invoices have been properly set up and so will my bills
13:28:16 <mib_a3ntob> For the givernment (Canada), I need to pay sales and services taxes every quarter
13:33:25 *** Krzysiek_K has joined #gnucash
13:34:38 <fell> jbwiv: You could use the python bindings or explore http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Published_tools
13:36:51 <fell> mib_a3ntob: did you read http://code.gnucash.org/docs/C/gnucash-guide/chapter_bus_ar.html ff.?
13:37:18 <jbwiv> fell: ok, I will. however, just curious...are batch transactions something the core team is uninterested in?
13:38:58 *** rickoehn has joined #gnucash
13:39:51 <gjanssens_> jbwiv: not necessarily. It's rather the current implementation makes it pretty hard to add this feature
13:40:01 <gjanssens_> This is due to design decisions taken in the past
13:40:07 *** gjanssens_ is now known as gjanssens
13:40:13 <fell> Some cases can be solved with scheduled transactions.
13:41:59 <jbwiv> gjanssens: ok, I see
13:42:17 <fell> Some by import or online banking, ...
13:42:36 <jbwiv> it's a shame...in general it seems more reliable than kmymoney, but batch editing is pretty important to me
13:42:48 <jbwiv> fell, I'm trying to import over 1000 transactions
13:43:16 <jbwiv> it'd be one thing if it offered you the capability of applying what it has learned after you've marked some rows
13:43:35 <jbwiv> for example, I'd wager 50 or so of these contain the string "TARGET"
13:43:51 <fell> And somewhere I saw a commnand line program using a gnucash database, where you could add transactions by parameters.
13:44:13 <jbwiv> it'd be nice to be able to move a Target transaction to an expense account and then say "do this for all matching transactions in this import"
13:44:40 <jbwiv> fell, I'll look into the python bindings. I can probably get somewhere there
13:45:41 <fell> That is what the baysian algorithm should do.
13:46:19 <jbwiv> fell, yes, but that won't happen until after I do a first successful import
13:48:03 <fell> Split your import in a small example file for learning and the big rest.
13:53:36 <mib_a3ntob> fell: yes, I read all the details about how to handle tax amounts
13:54:33 <mib_a3ntob> I do not understand how the Python bindings can help me in automatically calculating the taxes I owe vs the taxes I have already paid
13:55:15 <fell> mib_a3ntob: No that was for jbwiv.
13:55:53 <mib_a3ntob> oh, I see ;)
13:56:03 <fell> There is a section in the wiki, too: http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Using_Business_Features
13:58:44 <jbwiv> fell: good idea. i'll try that. thanks
