11:45:37 <swiftarrow> Hi! I've been searching everywhere for a standardized charter of numbered accounts. A friend who is an accountant in Sweden has a manual with standard numbers for each account (established by some accounting body), so I guess that there must be something similar in English... but I can't find it!
11:45:41 <swiftarrow> Any help?
11:45:55 <swiftarrow> Greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance...

12:14:38 <gjanssens> swiftarrow: I'm not sure I understand what you are looking for. Are you looking for such a chart of accounts within gnucash or more general somewhere on the internet ?
12:15:10 <swiftarrow> gjanssens: thanks for your reply!
12:15:25 <swiftarrow> I'm looking for it in GNUCash preferably, failing that, elsewhere on the internet
12:15:31 <swiftarrow> but numbered
12:16:24 <gjanssens> The charts of accounts you will find in GnuCash are organized by country/language
12:16:44 <gjanssens> The ones you will see when creating a new one are those for the language of your system
12:17:51 <swiftarrow> I did notice that, but found that they weren't numbered. I was hoping to find something to use as a numbering template. I'm no accountant, but having spent 4 weekends working on taxes, I want to make life easier for myself.
12:17:52 <gjanssens> So if you need an English chart of accounts, you'll have to set your system's locale to match the language/country you need and then create a new chart of accounts
12:18:26 <gjanssens> Hmm, if they're not numbered, you could always add the numbers yourself
12:18:53 <gjanssens> But I'm in Belgium and I'm pretty sure the account numbers used here won't match where you are (unless you are in Belgium too)
12:19:25 <gjanssens> So you'll need to check with an accountant in your country or search the internet for such information specific to your region
12:19:25 <swiftarrow> gjanssens: that's the thing... I was hoping that, as in Sweden, there was some sort of generally accepted numbering scheme for USA...
12:20:30 <gjanssens> There are several Americans on this irc channel that could give you some more directed advice
12:21:06 <gjanssens> But apparently not following the conversation currently
12:21:11 <gjanssens> They may chime in later...

13:50:19 <swiftarrow> OK, here's another question: I am wondering what is a better way to set up my accounts: Should I have my personal accounts in one database, my sole proprietorship in it's own database, and my rental houses in yet another database?
14:01:14 *** rubdos has quit IRC
14:11:14 <swiftarrow> Anyone out there? I'm wondering if it's better to make separate files for my rental properties and personal accounts, or is it better to have it all in one grand file?
14:11:22 <swiftarrow> Thanks in advance!

16:17:04 <gjanssens> swiftarrow: there is a "normalized" chart of accounts for Belgium, which comes with account numbers
16:18:05 <gjanssens> The numbers are hierarchical the first two or three digits have meaning and have to be followed
16:18:28 <gjanssens> The remainder can be used at will, although several accounts (with their number) are suggested
16:19:20 <gjanssens> As for separate files I think it would be better to separate them.
16:19:29 <gjanssens> It will make reporting per entity easier IMO
