16:17:32 <beardoessheet> Hi! I'm pretty new both to accounting & gnucash. I have a very simple scenario I'm trying to solve using gnucash.
16:18:37 <beardoessheet> Let's say I have 10 people who will leave a small amount of money deposit. And they'll withdraw partial sum of the deposited amount over a period of one year.
16:19:07 <beardoessheet> I'd like to track the deposit and withdrawal transactions using GnuCash.
16:20:05 <kimmo2> that's pretty simple
16:20:08 <beardoessheet> So I tried setting up a top level account called "Deposits" and it's a "Income" type account.
16:20:32 <beardoessheet> Under that placeholder "Deposits" .. i'll have seperate accounts for different ppl.
16:20:52 <kimmo2> well, it's probably income per se
16:21:05 <beardoessheet> Then I'll have another top level placeholder "Withdrawals" .. and it's an "Expense" type
16:21:32 <beardoessheet> under that "withdrawls" placeholder .. i'll have one account for each person who have deposited money.
16:22:16 <kimmo2> if people deposit money that they later withdraw, it's usually assets and liabilities...
16:22:27 <beardoessheet> So .. if someone, let's say Tom, deposit $100 .. then I'll go to Tom's accound under "Deposits" and type in 100?
16:22:28 <beardoessheet> Ah!
16:22:47 <beardoessheet> So .. the deposits should be "Assets"?
16:23:26 <kimmo2> so when Tom deposits $100, you increase the amount in "Swear Jar" by $100, and the contra account for that would be "Owed to Tom"
16:25:19 <beardoessheet> Ok. And when Tom withdraws.. I'll put in under Tom's account in Withdrawals?
16:25:21 <kimmo2> but if they each deposit the same amount and only withdraw it to pay for shared expenses, then it would be income/expense transactions (with the withdrawer's identity being irrelevant for bookkeeping purposes)
16:25:44 <kimmo2> no, just from "Swear Jar", to "Owed to Tom"
16:25:52 <beardoessheet> they withdraw it for personal expenses
16:26:06 <beardoessheet> So they can only spend their own money. Not someone else's.
16:26:32 <kimmo2> in that case, from Jat to Owed to Tom
16:27:20 <kimmo2> although I'm having difficulty understanding the purpose of a "private bank" such as this unless it's for frat boys' beer money jar or something
16:27:35 <beardoessheet> ya. Something similar!
16:28:25 <kimmo2> ok so in that case the Swear Jar vs. Owed to Frat Boy Tom works just fine
16:30:05 <beardoessheet> Owed to Frat Kid Tom would be a liabilities I guess?
16:30:05 *** hinnerk has joined #gnucash
16:30:15 <kimmo2> yeah
16:30:19 <hinnerk> hi
16:32:54 <beardoessheet> so it would look something like this in the end? http://i.imgur.com/Po0CvAE.png
16:34:58 <kimmo2> the imbalance should total $0
16:35:03 <beardoessheet> Also, what's the "imbalance-USD" doing therE?
16:35:26 <kimmo2> first of all, you don't need "Tom's Jar"
16:35:29 <kimmo2> just a common jar
16:35:42 <kimmo2> the "Owed to Tom" keeps a total of what's his share
16:38:03 <hinnerk> question about custom scheme reports: should the be place in .gnucash on top level or a specific subfolder?
16:39:00 <beardoessheet> I see. So instead of Tom's Jar I have "everyone's jar" and when Tom deposits something, I go into everyone's jar, add a description and transfer/increase the deposit amount to Owed to Tom account.
16:41:49 <kimmo2> Like this: http://www.fairwarning.fi/example.gnucash
16:43:13 <fell> can you reach bugzilla.gnome.org?
16:43:30 <beardoessheet> http://i.imgur.com/9MrIGre.png
16:43:34 <kimmo2> at least the main page yes
16:43:42 <beardoessheet> just saw ur example. Checking it out.
16:43:54 <kimmo2> now yours looks cool
16:45:08 <fell> Thx, will reconnect.
16:47:06 <beardoessheet> Looks good! So let's say when Harry withdraws $50, I can go to the Jar and transfer from "Liability:Harry" with decrease "$50" and it'll be done.
16:47:12 <kimmo2> yeah
16:47:43 <kimmo2> doesn't get much simpler than that
16:47:44 <beardoessheet> Either that or I can go to Liability:Harry and transfer from "Jar" with decrease $50. That should do the same job. Right?
16:47:50 <kimmo2> yeah
16:47:55 <beardoessheet> Thanks.
16:47:58 <kimmo2> de nada
16:48:28 <beardoessheet> Just couldn't wrap my head around it before ur help. =/

17:10:00 <hinnerk> so I added essentially a copy of the P&L report to the .gnucash folder, with a new filename, new reportname and new guid. But it doesn't appear anywhere in the menu. What's wrong?

17:21:04 <mecklen> Hi, thanks for gnucash, been using it for a year and I love it. Question: in 2.6.3 I want a report for a single account that summarizes transactions over a restricted period of time, say 1/1/14-12/31/14. I've tried I&E Cash Flow, Account Summary, and Transaction Report none of them seem to yield a useful report.
17:21:09 <mecklen> Suggestions?
17:22:03 *** ErKa has quit IRC
17:22:45 <hinnerk> there are a few possible approaches
17:22:53 <hinnerk> depending a bit on what exactly you need.
17:23:30 <mecklen> I'm trying to get a summary of all the interest I paid on a home loan for 2014. I have a home loan account, but it contains more than just 2014. So I'm trying to filter out older transactions.
17:23:32 <hinnerk> if your example is the typical case, that is calendar year, you may just use the P&L or clsoing books.
17:23:54 <hinnerk> is it a proper loss account?
17:24:07 <hinnerk> if so, just use P&L, singeling out the one account you want.
17:24:27 <hinnerk> you can set the P&L to cover any period you want.
17:25:03 <mecklen> It has Account Type "Expense". I don't know if that is a proper loss account. Thanks, I will try P&L.
17:25:11 <hinnerk> yes, that's good.
17:25:40 <hinnerk> start the report and check out its options.
17:26:24 <mecklen> Working great, Thanks!
17:31:11 <hinnerk> no problem

17:58:21 <kimmo2> mecklen, if you keep books on your personal finances, depending on your tax locale you might want to actually itemize quite a bit more than just interest on your loan
17:59:37 *** fabior has quit IRC
18:03:07 <hinnerk> kimmo2, do you use any custom reports?
18:04:39 *** jralls has joined #gnucash
18:10:55 <kimmo2> I do, but they're all just derivatives of the basic reports with certain options set
18:11:26 <kimmo2> I've been meaning to write my own reports for about 15 years now
18:15:31 *** MechtiIde has quit IRC
18:16:06 *** jralls has quit IRC
18:18:24 <hinnerk> ok. I was just wondering about where to put custom reports - I tried in .gnucash but I can't find the report in gnucash
18:19:54 <mecklen> So now I need to summarize just one Payee in an account. The P&L report worked great when I wanted all transactions, but doesn't seem to have a filter for ignoring some transactions.
18:20:57 <kimmo2> mecklen, unfortunately there's no support for dimensions or cost centers...
18:21:14 <kimmo2> hinnerk, no idea, really
18:23:04 <mecklen> Okay, thanks.
18:24:01 <kimmo2> mecklen, I work around that problem mainly with my account selection
18:24:34 <kimmo2> for any goods that the payee matters, I have for example Expense:Food:WalMart, Expense:Food:Otherstore
18:24:57 <kimmo2> I still get the food total, but I can also filter down to an individual store
18:27:46 <hinnerk> I use the same approach. Subaccont for each company/bank/...
18:30:09 <kimmo2> I've been asking for cost center/dimensions support for about 8 years now (Ever since I first needed the feature), to no avail. I'm guessing in another 8 years I'll have enough money to quit my day job and finally pick up gnucash programming
18:31:13 <mecklen> kimmo2, that's a great idea. I'll start doing that.
18:34:55 <kimmo2> yeah, it works wonders until you come up with a need for a second dimension
18:39:26 <hinnerk> there is the possibility of adding account for projects and then booking from there to expenses. this would allow some limited 2nd dimension idea
18:40:38 <kimmo2> sounds like an awful lot of work

23:24:10 <perth_> warlord: GnuCash autofill error just reoccurred in the Notes field, Search Dialog is set to 1, 3rd (matching) key press would jump to end of auto fill. After starting over 3 times it just stopped. Now at 4 keypresses... It honestly looks like there's an adaptive auto fill learning algorithim in place based off what I'm seeing, just ctrl+a and typed and it didn't jump to end... same with backspace now... this is wierd
23:25:33 <perth_> and it did it again on the 4th key press... wtf AH HAH
23:26:51 <perth_> Issue is (seems) to be related to mouse cursor posistion, if my mouse cursor is ON the notes field I get the issue, if the mouse cursor is NOT on the notes field the text posistion cursor doesn't jump to end.
23:28:47 <perth_> Not happening in account field, mouse cursor not causing any changes in the proper behavior, Search Dialog still set to 1
23:39:08 *** perth_ is now known as perth
23:43:27 <perth> Perhaps you should disregard all of this, I'm having multiple input issues now. 2 times on seperate entries I hit tab to move from notes to splits and my entry disappears, not in general ledger either, both times use calendar selector. I'm going to rebuild GnuCash...
