18:21:24 <wpd> What's the best way to import 15 years of Quicken Data (from Quicken 2006!) into GNU Cash? I would like to maintain the historical continuity and don't mind fiddling with the raw data to get it right (as long as I document, or better yet, script) what I do. My ancient Quicken accounting system involves heavy use of Classes, which I would need to export (somehow) and import as expense (sub)accounts in GNUCash.

18:51:13 <wpd> Hello again. For some reason, I got disconnected and didn't notice until now. If anybody responded to my query, would you mind re-replying and/or telling me where to find the public log of this channel?

19:31:19 <jralls> wpd: Nobody replied, but the logs are at http://lists.gnucash.logs/.
19:32:14 <jralls> There's a FAQ about your question: http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_Which_is_the_best_way_to_import_data_from_Quicken.28TM.29.3F.

20:04:42 <wpd> jralls: Thank you for the link and the pointer to the entry in the FAQ. I have already run through the procedure outlined in the FAQ (the "alternative" approach) and that didn't pull in my classes. I guess I could try the more detailed procedure, and create an account tree that matches my category & class organization, but I'm expecting that I will have to perform some surgery on my Quicken data prior to importing it into GN
20:04:42 <wpd> UCash.
20:12:44 <warlord> wpd: note that gnucash does NOT support anything like classes, and there really is not a good way to map that.
20:13:04 <warlord> unless you're using a class like a category (only a single item per split) ...
20:13:55 <warlord> But generally classes are a many-to-one tracker, not a one-to-one like categories. Categories map directly into GnuCash income/expense accounts. But classes...... There's no way to have a split be a member of multiple accounts.
20:14:33 <warlord> Also, wpd, the QIF Importer specifically ignores Classes, exactly because there is no Gnucash equivalent.

21:13:40 <wpd> Oops... tuning in again... do any of you know of any tools I could use to massage my QIF file into something that _would_ import into GNUCash?
21:14:14 <wpd> Can I import the file using Python and write it out again after having made some transformations of the classes?
