05:32:15 <neilv> the balance sheet reports show what seem to be nonsensical values for stocks/funds by default. the cause seems to be that the report's price source option defaults to an average of price paid.
05:33:32 <neilv> i think a better default would be to use the last known price rate (or the last known by the report date)
05:34:56 <neilv> this might also satisfy this bug report; not sure. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=725197

09:20:11 <rborbonth> question: Is there a way to schedule a transaction with relative numbrers?
09:21:24 <rborbonth> ie. if I want to schedule a loan payment that includes the principal and interest, could it be done?
09:22:21 *** ErKa has joined #gnucash
09:22:45 <gjanssens> lmat: nope, nothing appeared here...
09:23:21 <lmat> rborbonth: All I know about that is that there are "variables" available in scheduled transactions. How to use them or what they can do, I know not.
09:23:28 <lmat> Hi, there! Would someone help me with a coding problem ?
09:23:31 <lmat> I am trying to remove kvp binary from the code base.
09:23:33 <lmat> Checkout master, then apply http://sprunge.us/ecUj
09:23:35 <lmat> Then compile. The error is "undefined reference to binary_to_string".
09:23:38 <lmat> However, grep binary_to_string **; shows that it shouldn't be used!
09:23:41 <lmat> The error comes from libgnc-backend-xml-utils.
09:41:56 <warlord> rborbonth: sure, we even have pmt(), ppmt(), and ipmt() functions to auto-compute the total, principal, and interest payments.
09:42:12 <warlord> (although it only works with stable values; it doesn't support pre-payments)
09:43:04 *** aqua___ has quit IRC
09:43:24 <warlord> lmat: without looking at the patch, you removed this reference:
09:43:27 <warlord> /home/warlord/src/gnucash/gnucash-trunk/src/src/backend/xml/sixtp-dom-generators.c: tmp_str1 = binary_to_string(binary_data, size);
09:43:36 <rborbonth> thanks warlord. where can i find more information on this subject?
09:43:43 <warlord> rborbonth: the documentation
09:43:56 <warlord> rborbonth: have you tried the Mortgage & Loan Druid?
09:44:45 <warlord> lmat: also, are you perhaps linking against the wrong version?
09:46:00 <lmat> warlord: My process for building is
09:46:15 <lmat> cd gnucash && git clean -fdx && ./autogen.sh && ./configure ... && make;
09:46:20 <rborbonth> I have it grayed out
09:46:32 <lmat> warlord: Yes, I'm aware of that reference to binary_to_string, and the patch removes it.
09:46:45 <warlord> rborbonth: what is greyed out?
09:47:03 <rborbonth> the druid
09:47:59 <warlord> rborbonth: so you're saying the menu item Actions -> Scheduled Transactions -> Mortgage & Loan Repayment is greyed out?!?
09:48:22 <rborbonth> yeap
09:48:54 <warlord> rborbonth: screenshot, please.
09:49:37 <warlord> I cant think of *any* reason that would be greyed out at all, unless *every* menu item is greyed out, which only happens during "save"
09:50:24 <warlord> lmat: according to *my* sources, you're missing 3 references to "binary_to_string"
09:50:34 <warlord> I see 10 instances. You only remove 7
09:52:34 <warlord> granted, one of them is in the ChangeLog
09:52:42 <warlord> so you're missing 2 refs
09:53:00 <lmat> Okay, http://sprunge.us/WCYB :)
09:53:57 <warlord> lmat: you still have refs in libqof/qof/kvp_frame.c
09:55:11 <warlord> lmat: okay, now I think you have all the refs. make sure you "make clean" *just in case*
09:55:24 <warlord> Also, you might want to "make uninstall" to make sure it's not linking against older versions of the library
09:55:30 <rborbonth> how can i send the screenshot?
09:55:37 <warlord> rborbonth: imagebin
09:55:45 <rborbonth> elaborate
09:56:04 <rborbonth> sorry, newbie
09:57:08 <warlord> rborbonth: http://imagebin.ca
09:57:15 <warlord> upload the screenshot, post the URL here
09:58:43 <lmat> okay, running make uninstall; make clean; git clean -fdx; ...
09:59:34 <rborbonth> http://imagebin.ca/v/1aXWwNZk2Nu7
10:00:42 <lmat> rborbonth: What desktop environment is that?
10:02:13 <rborbonth> ubuntu 14.04 LTS with unity
10:02:15 <warlord> Wow. I have never ever seen that before! What version of gnucash is this? What OS/Distro?
10:02:51 <lmat> whoa, it worked :D
10:02:53 <warlord> gjanssens: do you have any clue why that menu item would be greyed out?
10:03:00 <lmat> warlord: I seriously didn't expect that to work. Thanks!
10:03:22 <warlord> LOL. libtool will often link against installed libraries instead of the in-tree libraries.
10:03:29 <warlord> I dont know why.
10:03:30 <rborbonth> 2.6.1. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
10:03:48 <lmat> warlord: I install to a different location, so that's surprising to me (./configure --prefix=/home/...)
10:04:04 <warlord> lmat: yeah... it can still sometimes be weird.
10:04:18 <lmat> rborbonth: Oh, okay. The little arrows are in the lower right of the menu items.
10:04:25 * lmat shrugs
10:04:55 *** floh1111 has joined #gnucash
10:05:49 <warlord> rborbonth: I have to admit that I have never ever seen this behavior in 10+ years of using GnuCash. I have absolutely no idea what could cause that menu item to be greyed out.
10:06:28 <rborbonth> oh ok. that's the faience theme and the icons are Unity-icon-theme
10:06:53 <lmat> rborbonth: ah
10:09:38 <warlord> Honestly, I have no clue. Try changing the theme? AFAIK there is nothing in the code that would ever make that menu item inaccessible.
10:11:46 <gjanssens> rborbonth, warlord: I have no idea either...
10:12:07 <gjanssens> I'd also suggest to update to gnucash 2.6.3
10:12:17 <gjanssens> There are important bugs in gnucash 2.6.1
10:12:23 <warlord> Yeah, but I dont think that would solve this problem
10:12:37 <gjanssens> probably not
10:13:35 <rborbonth> can i get that update through the software center or do i have to compile it?
10:14:19 <warlord> I'm sure there is a .deb for it, but you might need to add a different backports source
10:15:34 * warlord doesn't use ubuntu so can't help you with that specifically

10:28:04 <lmat> How excited are we about recursive make? Do we consider recursive make harmful?
10:28:05 <rborbonth> but i cannot do the loan payment manually putting a relative number in scheduled transaction
10:28:26 <warlord> lmat: nope, everyone does it.
10:28:36 <lmat> warlord: okay
10:29:04 <warlord> rborbonth: you can, but last I heard there was not a good way to manually enter the pmt() functions because it wont let you type in a colon character (or something like that)

14:53:30 <gjanssens> I initially wanted to apply this patch to maint, because it fixes a bug
14:53:43 <gjanssens> However it also comes with many translatable string changes
14:53:59 <gjanssens> Which I thought should ideally only happen on master
14:54:12 <gjanssens> What to do now ?
14:55:26 <jralls> Mark the patch as "Needs work" and tell the submitter to separate the patches so that it's one-bug-per-patch and doesn't have the gratuitous string changes.
14:56:04 <gjanssens> Ok
14:56:24 <jralls> If he wants to change the wording he can file an enhancement request with that part of the patch.
