08:32:55 <andrewralph> New to gnu cash having a few issues
08:32:56 <andrewralph> 1) I can't save my accounting files into a folder that is easily accessible! I follow steps to "save as" either in an existing folder or try and create a new folder and nothing is saved. The only place I can retrieve is either from the 4 recent files in "file" drop down or from "File" "open" > Places> folder "/" and then scrolling down "Name" the multitude of .gnucash saved accounts (documents) and hope the one I pick i
08:32:57 <andrewralph> correct the number of these saved documents is getting bigger and bigger and things are getting increasingly more difficult to find. Also some data that I try to open comes up with an error message "no back end" Please explain how I can save my files to an easily accessible folder.
08:32:58 <andrewralph> 2) How do I delete the trial and experimental files I have created
08:33:00 <andrewralph> 3) I have created 1 file that has 3 different bank accounts for 3 different rental properties and one bank account that has personal income and rental information for another property. I have been successfully importing data directly from the banks. I have set up a customized account tree to capture income and expense for each property and personal Income. The financial year for me is April 1st to March 31st. Can I, shou
08:33:04 <andrewralph> I continue to just add information chronologically and extract accounts specifically for this period or should I make a separate file for each year from April to March. If it would be better to keep annual accounts can I then transfer data already entered to a new file. I have been able to create a new blank set of accounts but again have been unable to save them to a common named folder see 1)
08:33:09 <andrewralph> Any help on these questions would be very much appreciated
08:33:11 <andrewralph> Regards Andrew

10:33:13 <fell> @tell andrewralph Sorry for the delay but at the weekend most of us are busy with their families. Most of your questions should be answered by http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#GnuCash_Files_and_managing_a_GnuCash_installation .
10:33:13 <gncbot> fell: The operation succeeded.

20:01:36 <lmat> I'm searching for transactions, and GNU cash isn't finding a transaction that I see in the general ledger.

20:02:18 <lmat> I'm thinking it's because it's over 6 months old? But the search screen doesn't say anything about limiting results by date...
20:14:37 *** rpg has quit IRC
20:52:31 <kpreid> lmat: if you're searching for text, make sure you're searching for the right one of "Description" "Notes" or "Memo"
20:52:46 <kpreid> (I wish there was a search that looked in all of those, but there isn't)
20:58:19 *** mlncn has joined #gnucash
21:05:16 <warlord> lmat: the search is looking for a transaction with one split that matches your criteria. I suspect you're specifying criteria from multiple splits which is why it's not finding it.
21:09:12 <warlord> kpreid: you can do an 'or' search that will effectively do that.
21:09:16 *** StuM has quit IRC
21:09:34 <kpreid> yes, but it is tedious to set up such a search
21:10:54 <warlord> True. Patches always welcome ;)
21:11:06 <warlord> (Not that I'm sure how you would actually implement that...)
21:11:24 <warlord> BIAW
21:12:11 <kpreid> well, the minimum impact stoopid way to do it would be to have a virtual field-to-search-on which concatenates all of the above
21:19:06 <lmat> kpreid: i was searching description and memo...perhaps I should have been checking notes, too :)
21:20:13 <lmat> warlord: I was searching a single word ("loa" was one and "catherine" was another search).
21:20:24 <lmat> warlord: It's found in only one note field (on one split). Thanks!
