07:35:55 <warlord> @tell adabo Escrow is an Asset, but Interest should be an expense. That does mean you cannot put the Interest Expense under your Liability account, you need to put it elsewhere in your tree (e.g. Expenses:Interest:<Loan>).
07:35:55 <gncbot> warlord: The operation succeeded.

09:58:43 <gjanssens> warlord: an off-topic question -
09:58:56 <gjanssens> I'm about to add two new disks in my local server
09:59:29 <gjanssens> and I remember you talking of running some burn-in when you last replaced disks in the gnucash server
09:59:39 <gjanssens> what software do you use for this ?

10:19:45 <warlord> gjanssens: two programs. I use badblocks to do a full write sequence, but before that I use a program called "preclear_disk" which I found on the web through 'unRaid'. I have that run through 3 cycles, and then I run badblocks to clear out everything.
10:20:01 <warlord> The whole process can take a good week, depending on the disk size.
10:27:23 <gjanssens> The disks are 4Tb each so I'm in for a long ride...
10:28:34 <warlord> Yeah..
10:28:42 <gjanssens> I'll check the preclear_disk program
10:28:45 *** Krzysiek_K has left #gnucash
10:28:46 <gjanssens> Thanks for the pointers
10:31:01 <warlord> gjanssens: I use:
10:31:10 <warlord> nice ionice -c 3 ./preclear_disk.sh -A -M 4 -c 3 /dev/sdg
10:31:22 <warlord> then
10:31:24 <warlord> date ; time nice ionice -c 3 badblocks -w -s /dev/sdg ; date
10:32:25 <warlord> preclear took 5 days, badblocks took another 3-4

10:33:15 <warlord> hi adabo
10:33:25 <adabo> Hi warlord
10:33:25 <gncbot> adabo: Sent 2 hours and 57 minutes ago: <warlord> Escrow is an Asset, but Interest should be an expense. That does mean you cannot put the Interest Expense under your Liability account, you need to put it elsewhere in your tree (e.g. Expenses:Interest:<Loan>).
10:33:58 <adabo> That's exactly why i'm here :)
10:34:18 <adabo> Noticed my Mortgage tree looked wrong
10:34:25 <adabo> the totals
10:34:50 <warlord> yeah. move escrow to asets and interest to expense
10:34:50 <adabo> HOwever, the Escrow is not /my/ asset. How can I make gnucash reflect that?
10:34:59 <warlord> it s your asset
10:35:27 <adabo> It is? Well, I guess it's my money they are using, but I can't do anything with it.
10:35:30 <warlord> if you close out your loan you get that money back
10:35:42 <adabo> That makes sense.
10:39:05 <adabo> warlord: Does any of this apply to me? http://www.myinvestmentblog.com/how-handle-escrow-payments-gnucash
10:41:12 <adabo> Actualy, it doesn't even specify that Escrow is an asset as you have. You should make your own blog ;)
10:42:04 *** O01eg has joined #gnucash
10:42:28 <warlord> LOL.
10:43:03 <warlord> Well, escrow could be equity or an asset, but IMHO it feels more accurate to be an asset. It's effecively a bank account (that you dont control) but it's still *your* money.

10:49:11 <adabo> I see. I haven't quite wrapped my head around what equity is yet. I just use it for opening balances. Other than that it just sits there.
10:51:57 <warlord> Yep, that's pretty much it
10:52:04 <warlord> Unless you have a business...
10:52:15 <warlord> for personal accounts, generally it's there for opening balances.
10:52:24 <warlord> for real-time equity use the Balance Sheet report

12:01:39 <adabo> Strange. How exactly does the delete move function work? It's only showing like 2 accounts that I can move my Interest account to.

12:04:42 <adabo> The Interest account is nested like this: Liabilities:Loans:Mortgage:Interest
12:05:13 <adabo> Trying to move it to Epenses:Loans:Mortgage:Interest
12:07:30 <adabo> Ahhh. I moved it to Orphan, then set the account type to expense and then it opens up all the accounts I can use :)
12:12:04 <warlord> adabo: umm.. why are you doing the delete->move thing instead of just moving and re-typing the account itself?
12:13:42 <warlord> You can just reparent (and re-type) the account from the edit account dialog

21:49:56 <xnox> i imported credit card statements. I'm too lazy to assign different accounts for each transaction.
21:50:18 <xnox> can i generate report that will sum things for same description and sort over a period?
21:52:05 * xnox exports to csv and opens in oo.o
21:52:47 <warlord> xnox: the transaction report *may* be able to do that..
21:52:55 <warlord> But honestly you really should assign accounts
21:53:01 <xnox> =/
21:54:46 <warlord> being lazy is no excuse.. you're just trading off work on the front-end for work on the back end
