04:13:26 <harman> Hi, I sent an email on GNUCash user mailing list about a week ago regarding my problem in employee reports. I didn't got any response so I thought I should ask at IRC. So, here is my problem:
04:13:37 <harman> I want to generate report for each employee that would include all
04:13:37 <harman> types of payments paid to him (monthly salary, conveyance charges)
04:13:37 <harman> right from the date of his joining.
04:14:36 <harman> I am aware about the process payment option under Business > Employee > Process Payment but I am not sure if it is a correct way to record their salaries. Further, I read GNUCash documentation, they said, in order to pay employee make a split transaction. If I move as per the documentation still am not able to see all payments made to employee.
04:14:48 <harman> Please let me know if I am missing or doing something wrong.
04:14:56 <harman> Thanks! :-)

06:26:33 <gjanssens> harman: the Business > Employee section is not designed to handle salaries
06:26:56 <gjanssens> It is only written to handle expenses an employee makes on behalf of the company
06:27:32 <gjanssens> In fact payroll is not implemented at all
06:28:36 <gjanssens> You may be able to treat an employee as a vendor to your company and record all amounts due to the employee as vendor bills.
06:29:35 <gjanssens> The alternative would be use basic accounts to manage your employee expenses (salary and all)
06:29:55 <gjanssens> I'm not sure the overhead of the business features gains you much
06:30:42 <gjanssens> Perhaps warlord can share his opinion later when he reads his irc log. He wrote most of the business code
06:40:23 *** StuM has quit IRC
06:57:56 <warlord> gjanssens, harman: Indeed, the "employee" section was designed originally for expense reporting. (I used it to record expenses that I incurred on behalf of my consulting business).
06:58:10 <warlord> Theoretically I suppose you could use it to record salaries as well.
06:58:25 <warlord> However last I checked there is no "start date" in there..
06:58:41 <warlord> and all the business reports are limited to looking back 1 year. (this could be remedied, of course)
06:58:58 <warlord> (good morning, gjanssens )

07:39:18 <harman> warlord: I tried but on report generation I got "Total credit amount as negative value". I don't know whether it is right or wrong. It would be extremely helpful if could give me step wise procedure to generate report to see all payments made to him.
07:40:19 <harman> *to generate report for each employee...
08:17:23 *** lmat has joined #gnucash
08:21:18 <warlord> harman: there is no such report..
08:21:23 <warlord> harman: you would have to write one
08:22:06 <warlord> (I'm not sure which report you tried to run that gave you "Total credit amount as negative value")

11:05:05 <harman> warlord: Actually I failed to express the problem clearly. I didn't got "Total credit amount as negative value" as printed message. I got for example,on running Employee report for particular employee from Reports > Business > Employee Report, I got, Total credit: -INR 15000.00. Why negative amount?

11:18:23 <jralls> gjanssens: Geert, I'm looking at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=725054 and the error box in the attachment says "gnc.app-utils.gsettings-DEBUG (recursed): [gnc_gsettings_get_schema_ptr] Looking for schema org.gnucash.general.report returned gsettings 0540C8F8 aborting...". That seems vaguely familiar.

11:34:23 <warlord> harman: because you've paid them 15000
11:34:46 <warlord> The report is designed to show you how much you owe them (based on outstanding expense reports).
11:35:00 <warlord> In your case you've paid them 15000 more than they "invoiced"

15:47:13 <gjanssens> jralls: gsettings has the bad habit of aborting if a schema is not found.
15:47:33 <gjanssens> The error message is confusing though
15:47:52 <gjanssens> Perhaps the trace file has more information
15:48:04 <gjanssens> I have to go for tonight
15:48:19 <gjanssens> If you don't get further may have a look one of the next couple of days
15:48:19 <jralls> gjanssens: In this case it's a red herring. Turns out the problem is a malloc error from trying to malloc(log10(0), sizeof(char))

15:48:35 <gjanssens> Oh good
15:48:41 <gjanssens> See you later
15:49:22 <jralls> log10(0) returns min_float, which when cast to a size_t becomes a very large number.
