08:45:30 <jimvideo> I'm just starting with GNUCash. After installing GNUCash the first time it worked well, but some time after that there were two bugs and I'm reinstalling it. It refused to let me use capitized letters and I had to take focus away and refocus to click on buttons.
08:45:35 <jimvideo> Darn, I reinstalled and it still can't take caps.
08:46:44 <jimvideo> Also, the unresponsive buttons are back.

10:00:01 <amjam> Hi everyone.
10:00:19 <amjam> When I keep importing my monthly transactions from my bank, is there any way to collapse or hide previous monthly transactions?
10:00:20 <amjam> Or do I just have to keep scrolling for ages to get to the bottom?
10:02:46 <amjam> additionally, when I imported my savings account transactions, there was a scheduled recurring transfer that showed up bright red and showed 3 red bars and 2 yellow bars with the note "Do not import (no action selected)" -- what does this normally mean?
10:02:48 <amjam> did I do something wrong?

10:06:50 <jralls> linas: I was exploring ancient history, connecting all of the old CVS merges back to their merge points in an "archive" branch so that future explorers will at least have a map.

10:07:41 <jralls> amjam: If you're seeing old transactions in the import dialog it means that you're trying to import old transactions, that they're included in the file you're importing.
10:09:59 <jralls> In the dialog, a yellow highlight means that the matcher failed and needs you to assign an account, otherwise it goes to the imbalance account for your currency. A red highlight means that the matcher thinks it's a duplicate and will discard it.
10:13:43 <jralls> You can override the "don't import" by checking the box in the "A" column.
10:14:14 <jralls> If you look in the lower-left corner of the dialog you'll see a large, friendly button labelled "Help" with a life preserver icon. Click that and a nice message box comes up with instructions on how to work the dialog.
10:14:55 <amjam> jralls: thanks. what do you mean by "import dialog"?
10:15:09 <amjam> I just click on Assets -> Checking Accounts. And there it lists all my transactions since January 2014.
10:15:09 <amjam> What you're saying is that all those transactions should still show up?
10:15:37 <jralls> The dialog box that opens when you use File>Import or Actions>Online Actions>Get Transactions which you use to assign the "other" split to the appropriate account.
10:16:48 <amjam> i'm not talking about any dialog box, though.
10:16:53 <jralls> No, I'm saying that the reason they show up is that they're in the file or data stream that you're importing.
10:16:57 <jralls> What, then, are you talking about?
10:16:58 <amjam> i am having alot of trouble w ith the terminology here.
10:17:22 <amjam> Under "Accounts" I have an account called "Checking Account"
10:17:38 <amjam> when I click to see my transactions, I see all my transactions since I began tracking my transactions.
10:18:09 <amjam> and I have to scroll quite a bit to get to the date 4/12/2014
10:18:20 <amjam> i'm not importing anything.
10:18:26 <amjam> (yet)
10:18:59 <amjam> my question is: once everything is reconciled is it supposed to just sit there?
10:19:15 <amjam> or does it move off the screen or collapse or something.
10:19:16 <amjam> does that make sense?
10:19:18 <jralls> OK. By default when you open a register it should position the cursor at the bottom, in the blank transaction ready for input.
10:19:37 <amjam> fair enough, thats certainly true. but i'm still curious about what happens to old transactions.
10:20:30 <jralls> Reconciled or not, the window shows only the transactions that fit in it. All of your transactions are always available by scrolling up from the bottom.
10:22:29 <jralls> Now what about the red and yellow lines and the "Do not import" message? Where did that come from if not the import dialog?
10:23:28 <amjam> okay, yes thats separate. And yes that came precisely from the import dialog.
10:23:49 <amjam> do the number of bars mean anything?
10:23:50 <amjam> like 3 red vs. 2 yellow
10:23:52 <amjam> or 4 red vs. 1 yellow?
10:23:52 <amjam> etc.
10:27:37 <jralls> Only that that's how many transactions you absolutely must check before clicking OK. It's wise to check all of them to make sure that the matcher picked the right account for each, because that's how you train the matcher to do a better job the next time.

10:35:19 <amjam> thanks jralls.
10:35:30 <jralls> You're welcome.
10:35:31 <amjam> sorry for the dumb questions, i'm still new at all of this.

11:59:35 <amjam> I have a really weird question: if I download the transaction history from my bank, and then also download the statement, and find discrepancies between the two, which should be the ultimate authority? The transaction history .csv file or the statement?

12:11:00 <amjam> is there any preference to downloading your transactions in anything other than Excel format?
12:11:06 <amjam> or .csv format?
12:11:29 <amjam> I guess I'm asking: why is .qfx/.ofx preferred? I don't see any noticible difference.

14:08:09 <fell> amjam: csv is a very general format, *fx are specialized formats for financial transactions.
14:09:20 <fell> E.g. can also report split transactions. How would you realize that in csv in an general accepted way?

14:12:53 <jralls> Frank, no, I wasn't able to get radr to accept my credentials. Went around with Apple support for months with no resolution.
14:13:23 <fell> radr?

14:13:50 <fell> Url?

14:15:21 <jralls> If you mean what's the URI for radr, you have to have a paid developer ID to get access at all, and even then you can see only the bugs you've filed yourself.
