06:33:41 <Lynx_> Hi all! I´m using gnucash for simple personal finance using the suggested categories. Now I would like to get an overview over my fixed costs, i.e. montly bills like phone or insurance. Can I somehow have things like that in a second category (e.g. ¨fixed costs¨)?

06:36:58 <flakk> Hello pople, I would like to display the state of my accounts in GnuCash some time ago. That is, I would like to see the same screen, as I see now when I click at "accounts" but corresponding to the date, say sept. 1 2013. Is it possible?
06:51:17 <SteveG> Hi Lynx, Really I am a beginner so maybe shouldn't answer but if I understand your problem then couldn't you create a 'fixed costs' account marked as a placeholder account and then put all your fixed cost accounts inside that. The place holder account would show you the total fixed costs?
06:53:43 <SteveG> Actually you dont even have to make it a placeholder account if you dont want to. You just need all the other fixed cost accounts inside one fixed cost account which would be in Expenses....

07:21:48 <Lynx_> SteveG: Hmm, but then I would not have those transactions in the normal accounts anymore? Like Communication/Phone or whatever.
07:22:08 *** flakk has quit IRC
07:22:24 <SteveG> I think you would
07:23:01 <SteveG> Let me expand
07:23:52 <Lynx_> Yes, I´m still not quite grasping the gnucash concept I guess
07:24:00 <SteveG> You create an account called fixed costs inside the existing Expenses account. You then create accounts like phone and insurance inside the new fixed costs account
07:24:52 <SteveG> It has taken me some time and I am still a beginner as I have not used it for real but I did pass (just) a bookkeeping exam using GnuCash
07:25:30 <Lynx_> That´s possible, yes. I kinda didn´t want that though, because some categories can be mixed with fixed cost transactions and ¨normal¨ ones. So I would have two ¨phone¨ accounts, one for fixed costs and one for other purchases for the phone.
07:25:38 <Lynx_> Well, that´s actually not bad I guess.
07:26:09 <Lynx_> Congrats for passing the exam!
07:26:19 <SteveG> Thanks!
07:27:03 <SteveG> Organising your accounts is a bit of an art and generally involves compromises so one way will be good in some ways and bad in others
07:28:10 <Lynx_> What I actually wanted is more complicated, I wanted an average of fixed costs per month, even though some bills are every 3 months and so on. I guess I can do that in Excel.
07:28:52 <SteveG> Yes I dont have the experience to know what is best for you. I have not got into budgeting etc....

09:28:54 <Lynx_> Another question: I would like to also split my cash spending into the accounts. Is the GnuCash android app the right choice for that? I would like to be able to note spending in my phone right after buying something and then synchronizing it with gnucash on the pc later.

09:49:55 <Lynx_> Yet another question/problem: I´m trying to add an account with AqHBCI. I click on ¨add account¨, then pick AqHBCI, and click ok, but the window just diappears back to the account list and nothing else happens. If I choose AqOFXDirectConnect, it works and I get a form.

13:37:36 <benoitg> mib_wpkjey: ofxconnect was written by acejones@users.sourceforge.net. Hasn't been updated in a while. It is indeed part of libofx, but I've never personally used it (no banks except one supports OFX Direct Connect in Canada).
