10:51:44 <swinchen> What is the best way to set up a retainer for a business account?
11:17:00 <warlord> swinchen: how would you "set it up" using pen&paper accounting?

12:01:32 <swinchen> warlord: I don't know... I am not much of an accountant. I would probably write it down in on a "retainer" sheet and when I did work I would subtract the bill from the "retainer sheet" and add it to my checking account.
12:02:32 <swinchen> With gnucash I not sure if the "retainer sheet" should be a liability account? I guess that makes sense... I wouldn't really want the money to show up on profit&loss until I did the work for it.
12:03:13 <warlord> Then there you go :)

16:28:48 <Dunbrokin> Yes, I am using Yahoo...but how do you update your F::Q? That is a new one one me.
16:29:57 <warlord> What OS/Distro are you using?
16:30:33 <freebooter> Question about descriptons for linked entries. e.g. I have a credit card acc and a paypal acc. For a payment from the cc to paypal I would have an entry linking the 2 accs. In the cc acc I would want to have 'paypal' as the description and in the paypal acc 'credit card' or similar.Neither is any use in its own acc. I could use 'credit card - paypal' but that seems a bit clumsy. Is there a convention for this? thanks
16:31:42 <warlord> freebooter: generally you would use the description for what the xfer is for.. You can see that it's going to paypal via the Transfer column, so you don't need to duplicate that in the Desc. Same thing from the Paypal account.
16:32:02 <warlord> In the desc you could put something like "feeding paypal from CC"
16:41:18 <Dunbrokin> "gnc-fq-update" returns me a command not found message. I can use it with -dump or -check...but not with -update
16:41:50 <Dunbrokin> I am on Ubuntu 13.10
16:41:54 <freebooter> so you mean if I bought 'item' via paypal put 'item' in the description? That may work. I tend to put the institution/person I am paying rather than what I am buying, ie 'shop' rather than 'item'
16:44:33 <Dunbrokin> cpan -D Finance::Quote
16:44:33 <Dunbrokin> mkdir /home/pj/.cpan/sources/authors: Permission denied at /usr/share/perl/5.14/CPAN/FTP.pm line 513
16:50:16 <warlord> Dunbrokin: try upgrading the perl-finance-quote package?
16:51:02 <warlord> freebooter: Note that Paypal is more of a "Bank" than a "Vendor", so you should treat it as such. More likely you should ignore paypal when they are just being a CC processor
16:51:13 <warlord> E.g., you're not "paying paypal", per se.
17:31:42 *** fell__ is now known as fell
17:33:54 <fell> Dunbrokin: Ubuntu removed gnc-fq-update from their package. You could ask them for a more recent F::Q, e.g. 1.27
17:35:05 <fell> gnc-fq-update and cpan replace system files. So you should run them as root - su or sudo.
17:41:51 <Dunbrokin> gnc-fq-update run as root will still not run. How would I go about asking Ubuntu for a more recent F::Q?
17:43:49 <Dunbrokin> How do I upgrade the perl-finance-quote package?
17:45:33 <jralls> You can always do it by hand, by running sudo cpan, then install Finance::Quote at the cpan> prompt.
17:46:10 <jralls> Hmm, should have quoted: `sudo cpan`, then "install Finance::Quote".
17:58:14 <fell> or "upgrade Finance::Quote"
18:05:10 <freebooter> The version of perl-f-q in the main ubuntu repos won't be updated until 14.04 is released. There may be a new version in a ppa. Search ubuntuforums to see for help. There must be other ubuntu gnucash users with the same problem.
18:14:34 <Dunbrokin> OK, will do, thanks.
18:21:35 <fell> There is a https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libfinance-quote-perl/1.18-2 but only for the next release.
18:30:48 <fell> There is a bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libfinance-quote-perl/+bug/1290197
18:44:19 <freebooter> You could try dowloading and installing 14.04 packages manually from http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/perl/ but this may break things so make sure you know how to revert to stock packages.

20:33:45 <der_Metzger> Hi, is anyone around here familiar with ofx?
20:34:23 <der_Metzger> I've been using ofxconnect to create an ofx file to import to gnucash, but recently it stopped working

21:04:09 <warlord> der_Metzger: what part stopped working.
21:04:40 <Dunbrokin> No help in ubuntu forums I am afraid... I guess I will just have to wait til 14.04...but that really sucks and sets back my work!
21:07:50 <der_Metzger> warlord: ofxconnect would give me zero byte files
21:08:06 <der_Metzger> but I've just used the ofx post info ofxconnect + curl to get a proper ofx file
21:08:42 <der_Metzger> I think it's because curl is being a bit over zealous on rejecting ssl certs now
21:15:21 <der_Metzger> I think this might have to do with this gnutls problem
21:32:49 *** SteveG has quit IRC
21:37:56 <der_Metzger> Hrmm, it was nice when ofxconnect would handle it all
21:38:08 <der_Metzger> but now I have it working reliably again
21:48:13 <warlord> Dunbrokin: your other option is to apply the one-line fix manually.. take a look at the gnucash-user archives for the actual change required.
21:48:48 <warlord> der_Metzger: ofxconnect? Not sure what that is, but it sounds like something outside GnuCash/AqB
21:49:02 <der_Metzger> yeah, it is, from libofx
21:49:22 <der_Metzger> thought I might find some breathing people who have heard of it around here =)
21:49:34 <warlord> only maybe benoitg
21:52:49 <der_Metzger> he's probably heard of it =)
21:53:03 <der_Metzger> Ace Jones is in the header
21:53:14 <der_Metzger> sounds almost like I'm looking for Ace Rimmer
22:00:21 <Dunbrokin> Thanks problem solved. I know the definition of madness is to keep doing the same thing whilst expecting a different result. But that is what happens with computers. I kept on updating Cpan...and eventually I got the latest version of F::Q and now it works....don't ask me why! Thanks for your help.
